ALEK SKARLATOS FILES FOR REELECTION IN 4TH STATE HOUSE DISTRICT

KQEN News Radio

On Wednesday, State Representative Alek Skarlatos of Winston announced that he has filed for reelection to Oregon’s 4th State House District.

In a campaign release, Skarlatos said, “After my first year in the legislature, I have learned a lot and had the honor of being elected by my colleagues to serve as Deputy Leader of the House Republican Caucus”. Skarlatos said, “While I am optimistic for the future of our state, I have seen firsthand how the Democrats have run our state into the ground, and it makes we want to fight even harder in my second term”. Skarlatos said, “I would be honored if the people of the 4th House District would send me back to continue fighting against the terrible policies that are ruining our state, and for a better way of life for themselves and all Oregonians”.

The release said Skarlatos has a long history of fighting for the conservative movement and southern Oregon. Prior to entering the policy arena, Skarlatos served in the Oregon Army National Guard and completed a nine-month deployment in Afghanistan in 2015. Later that year, Skarlatos, along with four others, stopped an armed terrorist on a Paris-bound train. His heroism earned him several awards and medals around the world including, the United States’ Soldier’s Medal and the French Chevalier of the Legion of Honour.

Upon completing his service, Skarlatos authored “15:17 to Paris: The True Story of a Terrorist, a Train and Three American Heroes” describing the events that led up to the attack on the train ride to Paris from Amsterdam. He later worked with legendary director Clint Eastwood on the film, “15:17 to Paris” that portrayed the attack, in which Alek starred as himself.

Skarlatos was elected to represent the 4th State House District in 2024. The district is made up of communities in southern Douglas, Josephine and Jackson counties.

Skarlatos announced his campaign Wednesday on Inside Douglas County on News Radio 93-9 FM and 1240 KQEN. That interview is a KQEN podcast at www.541radio.com

ROSEBURG BASED COMPANY AMONG TOP FOREST OPERATORS: ODF

KQEN News Radio

A Roseburg based company is among the top forest operators for 2025 announced by the Oregon Department of Forestry on Wednesday.

Austin Weber and his company Weber Logging and Construction were chosen as Operator of the Year for the Southwest Oregon Region for successfully working under new Forest Practices Act rules requiring him to protect a half dozen stands of trees in especially steep areas at risk of landslides.

An ODF release said leaving trees in those stands served various purposes, including protecting soils from erosion and downstream water from sediments. Trees left standing would also be available when they eventually fell over to deliver woody debris for future fish habitat. To do so, Weber had to set up multiple yarding sites and haul logs up to lands on the side of the road above the harvest unit.

Michael Williams of Roseburg Forest Products, who nominated Weber, said he also protected a fish bearing stream in the unit, avoiding damage to trees in the stream buffer. Williams said that Weber has consistently excelled at protecting natural resources while harvesting in some of the most challenging situations in the region, for nearly twenty years.

The other honorees are:

  • Eastern Oregon: Boulder Ridge Logging LLC, headquartered in Bend
  • Northwest Oregon: Quality Excavation Inc. out of Seaside.

Three regional advisory committees to the Oregon Board of Foresty selected the trio earlier this fall. The recipients will be recognized in Salem at the January meeting of the board.

The award recognizes forest operators who, while harvesting timber or doing other forestry work, have an excellent track record of protecting natural resources and improving forest health at a level that consistently meets or exceeds requirements of the Oregon Forest Practices Act. That law requires people to manage forests responsibly and protect streams and water quality, protect and enhance habitat, and reduce landslide risks. The law also requires landowners to replant forests after harvesting.

Roseburg Forest Products Shuts Down Weed, California Veneer Plant

The Roseburg Receiver

Roseburg Forest Products announced Wednesday that it has permanently closed its veneer plant in Weed, California, effective Dec. 3, 2025. The company said veneer production is being consolidated at its Oregon facilities, where new, highly efficient equipment has recently been installed.

According to Roseburg, the shift is aimed at strengthening the company’s long-term competitiveness in the engineered wood and softwood plywood sectors.

This step, combined with Roseburg’s decision in September 2025 to leave the hardwood plywood market, is part of a broader strategy to focus resources on a more streamlined product lineup and improve its position in an increasingly competitive industry.

Company president and CEO Stuart Gray said the investments in the Riddle and Coquille, Oregon veneer and softwood plywood mills, along with updates at the Riddle engineered wood mill, have placed those facilities among the most cost-competitive in North America. He noted that these moves are necessary for the company to compete with growing volumes of low-cost imported wood products.

Gray also acknowledged the effect the closure will have on employees and the Weed community, expressing appreciation for the workforce’s contributions over nearly four decades. He said the company is reviewing potential future uses for the site that could allow it to remain an economic asset for the region.

The Weed facility employed about 140 workers. Roseburg said employees will receive 60 days of compensation and healthcare coverage and are encouraged to apply for open positions at other company locations. Support and transition resources will be available for affected team members. The company also confirmed it will continue to meet active renewable power generation contracts tied to the site’s biomass power plant.

Roseburg emphasized its continued commitment to the Weed community, citing its $7 million contribution to establish a local foundation, ongoing support of the Weed Community Scholarship Fund, and the provision of a rent-free fire station for the City of Weed Fire Department on company property.
