SOUTH UMPQUA HIGH SCHOOL TEMPORARY CLOSURE
KQEN News Radio

Due to a fast-moving illness running through the community, officials with the South Umpqua School District have closed South Umpqua High School for the rest of the week.
Information on the district website said this week over 50 percent of SUHS students are out with similar flu-like symptoms. After consulting with the Douglas Public Health Network, the decision to close the school was made.
The closure will allow the many students who are ill to recover, as well as limit the spread of the illness. Staff will also be able to do a deep cleaning of the facility to further limit the spread of this illness. High school students will return to school next Tuesday, February 18th, following the President’s Day holiday.
The district said the closure does not impact extra-curricular activities, including athletics. Students participating will not be present if they are showing any sign of illness.
The closeure impacts South Umpqua High School only. All other schools in the district are operating on a normal schedule. Families are asked to take universal precautions to avoid illness, including frequent hand washing. Children who are ill should be kept at home.
SKARLATOS CALLS FOR END TO DEMOCRAT’S SANCTUARY POLICY
KQEN News Radio

On Monday, 4th District State Representative Alek Skarlatos announced the introduction of House Bill 3551, which would allow state and local law enforcement to work with federal immigration authorities to identify and remove illegal immigrants convicted of a violent felony or sexual assault.
Skarlatos said, “Our communities should not be sanctuaries for murderers, rapists, and other violent criminals”. Skarlatos said, “This bill is common sense policy that protects Oregonians by holding the most violent criminals accountable by providing a partial fix to our state’s sanctuary state law”.
House Minority Leader State Representative Christine Drazan, a sponsor of the bill, said, “Oregon’s Sanctuary State law is extreme and out of touch with the vast majority of Oregonians who want to live in safe neighborhoods”.
A release from the House Republican Caucus said a statewide poll commissioned by House Republicans ahead of the 2025 Legislative Session revealed that 69 percent of Oregonians support deporting undocumented immigrants who have been convicted of a crime while in the United States. Only 19 percent of Oregonians support Oregon House Democrats’ position that no new immigration policies are needed to keep community’s safe. The statewide poll was conducted by Public Opinion Strategies between January 4th and 7th of this year and surveyed 500 registered Oregon voters with a plus or minus margin of error of 4.38 percent.
The release said Governor Tina Kotek has pledged to “uphold Oregon’s sanctuary promise laws” and Attorney General Dan Rayfield has added resources towards the “Sanctuary Toolkit and Guidance” to shield undocumented immigrants from federal law enforcement, even those who have committed violent crimes.

LDS CHURCH DONATES SEMI-TRUCK LOAD OF FOOD TO FEEDING UMPQUA
KQEN News Radio

Roseburg’s Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints recently delivered a truckload of food to the United Community Action Network’s Feeding Umpqua regional food bank to support Douglas County’s emergency food network.
A UCAN release said the church’s donation was nearly 30,000 pounds, including pallets of canned goods with nutrient-dense items such as fruit, vegetables and beans.
The food will be distributed to families in need through Feeding Umpqua’s network of 16 food pantries, 5 kitchens/shelters and nearly 30 community organizations. Together these agencies help to fight hunger throughout Douglas County.
UCAN’s Director of Health and Wellness Colleen May-Weir said, “This contribution comes at a critical time to support UCAN’s efforts to decrease hunger in Douglas County, as we are presently seeing declining rates of government support for emergency food acquisition”. May-Weir said, “As hunger is a major contributor to poor health, the donation also helps address an array of nutrition-related conditions, such as diabetes and chronic heart disease”. The 30,000 pounds of food, combined with other perishable items, will help feed 1,050 families for around five days.
The release said UCAN is deeply grateful for the generosity of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and the impact this donation will have on families across the county.
Those interested in having a food drive at their workplace, school or church can find more information at: https://www.ucancap.org/food-donation/

WYDEN INTRODUCES BIPARTISAN BILL TO PROTECT BEACHES IN OREGON
KQEN News Radio

On Tuesday, U.S. Senator Ron Wyden introduced bipartisan legislation that he said would preserve coastal beaches in Oregon and nationwide by providing funding for state, local, and tribal governments to test, monitor, and identity recreational waters that are contaminated.
Wyden said, “The Oregon Coast offers unmatched opportunities for visitors to make fond memories and for residents of one of America’s most iconic coastlines to live and work in and next to the Pacific Ocean”. Wyden said, “But the ongoing threat of pollution piling up on our coastal beaches every year demands commonsense solutions to help protect this treasure and keep Oregonians healthy”. This bill accomplishes those goals by protecting, preserving, and improving our beaches in every corner of Oregon and America for generations to come”.
Wyden’s release said currently there’s dedicated federal funding for monitoring and notifying beachgoers of contaminated coastal waters – but there is no money allocated towards identifying contaminated sites. Wyden’s new bill, the BEACH Act, would reauthorize this $30 million program over the next four years to allocate funding for identifying contaminated beaches and trace the source of the contamination.
Wyden’s bill would also expand testing locations to include shallow recreational waters near the beaches, where children and seniors often play and swim, who are more at risk of experiencing health issues from contamination.
The legislation is endorsed by Environment America, Surfrider, the American Shore & Beach Preservation Association and the Coastal States Organization.
