ROSEBURG SCHOOL DISTRICT PURSUES UNIQUE PARTNERSHIP WITH UCC

KQEN News Radio

Officials say the Roseburg School District is following through on its commitment to develop innovative career pathways.

A district release said last Wednesday the school board agreed to pursue a unique partnership with Umpqua Community College.

The board of directors voted to move forward with a proposal to build an advanced medical pathways facility for Roseburg High School students on the UCC campus. The proposal would involve the district contributing up to $2.5 million for the construction of a facility that would be connected to UCC’s planned Welcome Center and Medical Careers Hub.

Superintendent Jared Cordon said, “This is a once in-a-lifetime opportunity to not only fully integrate with UCC’s advanced medical program and provide seamless career pathways for our students but to create a legacy of learning and workforce development for our entire community”.

The release said completion of the project will rest on a mutually agreed upon legal review and memorandum of understanding between the district and the college’s boards of directors.

The district’s share of the project would create a space built specifically for high school students taking dual-credit classes as they follow pathways leading to certifications, associate degrees and baccalaureate degrees in a number of healthcare fields.

In partnering with UCC on construction, the district would be able to provide students with access to a state-of-the-art faculty at a fraction of the cost of building a facility independently. RHS students pursuing advanced medical careers will train with specialized equipment, benefit from direct industry partnerships and follow a curriculum designed to meet workforce demands both local and beyond.

UCC expects to break ground on the facility this summer, with an estimated completion date of early 2027.

UCC President Dr. Rachel Pokrandt said, “This is an incredible opportunity to continue our integration efforts with the Roseburg School District”. Pokrandt said, “These career pathways support the future success of our medical providers through a strong workforce and our young people with careers that result in family supporting wages”.

UACT ANNOUNCES ITS SUMMER MUSICAL

KQEN News Radio

Umpqua Actors Community Theatre has announced its summer musical.

Anastacia will be presented live at Jacoby Auditorium, July 24th through August 3rd.

The production is based on the beloved animated movie from 20th Century Fox. Anastacia is described as both a heartwarming and heart-wrenching dive into one of history’s biggest unanswered questions: what happened to the Grand Duchess Anastacia Romanov? The musical transports its audience from the twilight of the Russian Empire to the euphoria of Paris in the 1920s, as a brave young woman sets out to discover the mystery of her past.

Pursued by a ruthless Soviet officer determined to silence her, Anya finds herself stranded in what was once the Russian capital, St. Petersburg. The story goes on from there as Anastasia explores one determined girl’s journey to find home, love and family as she discovers who she was and embraces who she is meant to be.

ZONTA AND UCC TEAM UP DURING DOUBLE DONATION DRIVE

KQEN News Radio

The Zonta Club of Roseburg and Umpqua Community College are teaming up as part of Zonta’s Double Donation Drive.

Those attending the UCC women’s basketball game this Saturday, February 22nd are urged to clean their closets, bag their unused clothing and drop it off when they come to the game at 2:00 p.m.

It will be a win for Zonta and Sunrise Enterprises. Those dropping off a donation at the game will receive a ticket for free popcorn. As part of its Double Donation Drive, Zonta donates the clothing to Sunrise Enterprises who benefit by having more clothing for their retail service and achieving their goal of providing inclusion and jobs to those with disabilities. Sunrise then makes a nominal donation to Zonta to help work to empower women.

Clothing donated should be clean and lightly used. No shoes, purses, or household goods can be accepted. Game admission is $5 for adults and $3 for those ages 12 and under.

Clothing can also be dropped off at Cardinal Services on Northwest Stewart Parkway and the Roseburg Public Library on Northeast Diamond Lake Boulevard, by the end of February.

ROSEBURG MAN HOSPITALIZED AFTER VEHICLE ROLLS SUNDAY NIGHT

KQEN News Radio

A Roseburg man was hospitalized following a single-vehicle accident on Sunday night.

A Douglas County Sheriff’s Office report said at 9:40 p.m. the 24-year-old was traveling eastbound in the 2200 block of Hubbard Creek Road in the Umpqua area. The driver noticed a deer in the road and attempted to swerve to avoid hitting it. The pickup crashed into a retaining wall causing the driver to lose control of the vehicle, resulting in the vehicle rolling one time.

The driver was transported to CHI Mercy Medical Center for his injuries, which appeared to be minor scrapes. No signs of impairment were observed. A towing company took possession of the pickup.

ONE JAILED, ONE CITED FOLLOWING WEEKEND DISTURBANCE

KQEN News Radio

One person was jailed, and one was cited following a weekend disturbance in the Reedsport area.

A Douglas County Sheriff’s Office report said at about 5:40 p.m. Sunday a deputy responded after a caller said there was a disturbance in the 75000 block of US Highway 101. A victim claimed that 30-year-old Shyann Duvall of Coos Bay had been at the location to drop off items for their children. The victim said Duvall brought a 30-year-old man, also from Coos Bay, with her. The victim said that when he went towards the woman’s vehicle, the man with her climbed out the window and grabbed his dog, allegedly holding it in a threatening manner.

The victim claimed the second man threatened to release the dog on him. Duvall then reportedly grabbed the victim by the arm, tried to pull him back, and struck a juvenile victim in the cheek. Then Duvall allegedly got into her vehicle and backed up straight toward the victim. The man said he had to jump to get out of the way.

The Coos Bay Police Department located Duvall and detained her on probable cause. She was charged with attempted fourth-degree felony assault, recklessly endangering another person, menacing and harassment. Duvall was detained without bail. The second man was cited for menacing and released in lieu of custody.
