A Winter Storm Warning is in effect Wednesday from 7:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. for mountain areas in parts of southern Oregon.

Forecasters at the National Weather Service said heavy snow is expected with total snow accumulations between 4 and 8 inches, except for up to 12 inches near Crater Lake. South to southwest winds will be gusting as high as 45 miles per hour.

The Warning area includes the southern Oregon Cascades and Siskiyou Mountains. It applies to Highway 140 near Lake of the Woods, Highway 62 towards Crater Lake, Highway 58 near Willamette Pass and highways 138 and 230 near Diamond Lake.

Those who must travel should keep an extra flashlight, food and water in their vehicle in case of an emergency. Call 511 or visit www.tripcheck.com for road information.

OREGON’S U.S. ATTORNEY TERMINATED BY TRUMP ADMINISTRATION

KQEN News Radio

On Tuesday, the United States Attorney’s Office for the District of Oregon announced the departure of United States Attorney Natalie Wight.

A release said Ms. Wight was informed of her termination in a communication from the White House. As a Presidential appointee, Wight is subject to removal from office at the discretion of the sitting president. The White House thanked her for her service to the United States.

A twenty-year veteran of the department, Wight was recruited directly into the Attorney General’s Honors Program in 2003.

With the support of Senators Ron Wyden and Jeff Merkley, Wight was nominated by President Joe Biden in June of 2022, and was confirmed by the U.S. Senate in September of that year.

Wight said, “I am proud of the Office’s dedication to protecting Oregon’s youth, supporting law enforcement and maintaining strong agency partnerships”. During her tenure, Wight focused on outreach to schools by educating students on the dangers of fentanyl, warning of online exploitation, and applauding the care and compassion of Oregon’s student leaders.

Wight’s first assistant, William Narus, will serve as acting U.S. attorney until the new administration nominates Wight’s replacement.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office in Oregon has locations in Portland, Eugene and Medford.

DRIVERS SHOULD USE CAUTION ON HIGHWAY 138E, 32 MILES EAST OF GLIDE

KQEN News Radio

Drivers should use caution on a section of Highway 138E, 32 miles east of Glide.

An update from the Oregon Department of Transportation said the area is still impacted by a slide that took place late last year. ODOT Public Information Officer Julie Denny said motorists should prepare to slow down when approaching the area. Denny said both lanes are currently open, but the lanes are narrow.

ODOT will continue with this traffic pattern until the weather allows crews to get into the area and make permanent repairs. During that work, one lane will be open through the area, with traffic control.

Crater Lake Reaches 150 Inches of Snow, Deepest Level This Winter

The Roseburg Receiver

As of Tuesday, Crater Lake National Park has recorded its deepest snowpack of the season, reaching 150 inches (12.5 feet). This marks the highest accumulation so far this winter, providing a significant boost to the region's snowpack and water reserves.

Crater Lake, known for its heavy annual snowfall, typically receives over 450 inches per year, making it one of the snowiest locations in the Pacific Northwest. The recent storm systems have contributed to the rising levels, bringing fresh powder and ideal conditions for winter recreation such as snowshoeing, skiing, and sightseeing.

According to meteorologists, additional snowfall is expected in the coming weeks, with forecasts predicting another 6-12 inches by the end of the month. While this increase benefits the local ecosystem and water supply, park officials urge visitors to prepare for extreme winter conditions and check road closures before traveling.
