CELEBRATION OF LITERACY ANNOUNCES ONE COUNTY, ONE BOOK WINNERS

KQEN News Radio

The program was developed during the pandemic for middle school students. A book is selected that fits their age group. This year it was “Daughter of the Deep” by Rick Riordan. Students interested in participating register at their school or community library. After reading the book, they submit some kind of critique.

Three prizes were given this year. First place of $100 went to Scarlett Anderson of Joseph Lane. The second-place award of $50 was given to Easton Smith of Glendale. Third place, $25, was a team effort by Oakland students Thomas Reece, Michelle Beach and Brylon Hammer.

LAWMAKERS CALL ON DEMOCRATS TO SUPPORT RESPONSIBLE IMMIGRATION

KQEN News Radio

On Wednesday, state representatives Alek Skarlatos of Winston, Virgle Osborne of Roseburg, Ed Diehl of Stayton, and Darin Harbick of Rainbow issued a statement regarding what they claim is the Democratic party’s resistance to the enforcement of responsible immigration.

The lawmakers said, “We are deeply disappointed by out-of-touch views of today’s Democrat Party that labels the majority of Americans as extremist for supporting the enforcement of immigration laws against violent illegal aliens. Securing our borders and upholding the rule of law to hold criminals accountable is not extreme – its simple common sense”.

The statement from the representatives continued saying, “For the first time in decades more Americans identify as Republicans rather than Democrats. That is no coincidence. The Democratic Party has abandoned responsible immigration policy and lost touch with the concerns of hardworking Americans across our state and our nation”.

Their statement concluded: “It’s time for our Democrat friends to recognize that enforcing immigration laws isn’t about partisanship – it’s about the protection and security of our communities – including law abiding immigrant communities”.

ROSEBURG LIBRARY STAFF CONTRIBUTE TO STATEWIDE LIBRARY COMMUNITY

KQEN News Radio

Roseburg Public Library Director Kris Wiley and Youth Services Librarian Aurora Ropp say they believe in giving back to the greater library community through service in statewide organizations.

A City of Roseburg release said their most recent volunteer project involves serving as program coordinators for the 2025 Oregon Library Association Conference, which will be held in April in Eugene.

The OLA conference is an opportunity to network, learn from speakers in order to stay updated on trends and best practices, meet with representatives from vendors used by the library and share Roseburg library staff’s knowledge with others, according to Wiley.

The program coordination component started in October, when Wiley and Ropp solicited session ideas from librarians, educators, and museum professionals. Over the past month, the two created the schedule, confirmed speakers and finalized descriptions for 80 sessions.

Wiley said, “Our job is nearly done, and we look forward to a fun-filled and jam-packed conference”.

Wiley will be a speaker at the conference, sharing information about the Oregon Digital Library Consortium. She is in her second and final year as ODLC chair but plans to remain the ODLC Governing Board representative for the group’s associate libraries, which are those with a service population of less than 50,000.

Ropp is in her second year as secretary of the Oregon Library Association Children’s Services Division, a group that promotes and advances library service to children and youth through public and professional education and cooperation.

Wiley said, “We enjoy these opportunities to collaborate and will continue to share our time and expertise with colleagues from around Oregon”.

RHS FOUNDATION NAMES FUTURE FIRST CITIZEN FINALISTS

KQEN News Radio

Five Roseburg High School seniors have been chosen as the semi-finalists for the 2025 Future First Citizen Award.

A Roseburg High School foundation release said the students will share $26,000 in scholarship money, with the winner earning $10,000 toward tuition at the college of their choice. The remaining four finalists will each receive $4,000 scholarships.

Foundation President Brian Prawitz said the award recognizes five top seniors as future leaders, volunteers, supporters and role models who will make a difference in their community.

Prawitz said the semi-finalists are Annan Kohlberg, Sylvia Eckman, Owen Miller, Nilisha Patel and Grace Harris.

The students will be interviewed by a panel that includes a representative from the foundation, a past winner of the Future First Citizen Award, and three local business leaders who have donated to the scholarship fund.

The winner will be announced at the Roseburg High School Foundation Scholarship Night set for 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday, March 12th at the RHS student center.

The Future First Citizen recognition and scholarship award was initiated for the RHS seniors 25 years ago. The Roseburg High School Foundation Board assumed oversight of this recognition in 2020.

ELMER’S RETURNS TO ROSEBURG WITH NEW BREAKFAST & BRUNCH LOCATION

Elmer’s, a beloved Pacific Northwest restaurant chain, is making a triumphant return to the Roseburg community with a brand-new location and a fresh concept: Elmer’s Kitchen Breakfast – Brunch – Mimosas. The restaurant is set to open later this year at 3030 Northwest Aviation Drive, the former site of Shari’s Café and Pies.

The new 4,950-square-foot restaurant will serve breakfast and lunch daily from 6:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., offering a modern twist on the classic Elmer’s experience. The Roseburg location will be company-owned and situated just north of the restaurant’s former site, which closed after 24 years due to the franchise operator’s retirement and property redevelopment.

Jerry Scott, President and CEO of Elmer’s Restaurants, expressed excitement about the return to Roseburg. “We heard from so many guests who missed having Elmer’s in Roseburg, and we’re thrilled to bring it back,” Scott said. “This new location allows us to continue serving the community with the same genuine hospitality and freshly prepared entrees, now in an updated and refreshed space.”

The menu will feature Elmer’s signature emphasis on fresh, high-quality ingredients and traditional flavors. Fan favorites like the German Pancake, Looking for Sun Omelet, Bacon & Tillamook Cheddar Potato Pancakes, and Classic Mimosa will be front and center, ensuring a familiar yet elevated dining experience.

“Everything we do at Elmer’s is done to support our three-word mission statement: ‘Delight Our Guests,’” Scott added.

Elmer’s Vice President Jill Ramos shared that the restaurant will create 30 to 40 new jobs in the community. Hiring will begin approximately one month before the opening, with applications available this spring on the company’s website: www.eatatelmers.com/careers.

The new Elmer’s Kitchen Breakfast – Brunch – Mimosas is expected to open in late spring or early summer, marking the 25th Elmer’s location across Oregon, Washington, Idaho, California, and Arizona.

For Roseburg residents, the return of Elmer’s is more than just a restaurant comeback—it’s a revival of cherished memories and a promise of new ones. With its updated space, beloved menu, and commitment to hospitality, Elmer’s is ready to once again become a staple in the community.
