HIGH PRESSURE LEADING TO MORE SUNSHINE, NEAR RECORD HIGH TEMPERATURES

KQEN News Radio

Weak high pressure over the Umpqua Valley is leading to two more days of sunny conditions with near record high temperatures for the date.

Thursday’s high in Roseburg should be in the upper 60s with Friday forecast to reach 70 degrees. The record high for Thursday is 69 degrees, set in 1938. Friday’s record high is 71 degrees, reached in 1934. The mercury got to 69 degrees on Wednesday at the Roseburg Regional Airport. That was well below the record high for February 26th, which was 79 degrees, set in 1932. Thursday was the warmest day of 2025 so far.

Forecasters at the National Weather Service in Medford told News Radio 93-9 FM and 1240 KQEN that a weak front will move into the region late Saturday afternoon or early Saturday evening bringing more rain. A chance of precipitation is expected to continue into next week.

RECOVERY BOUND WITH H.O.P.E. PROJECT

KQEN News Radio

The Douglas County H.O.P.E. Drug Court program is preparing for their 109th graduation on May 13th at 5:15 p.m. in the Cascade Hall building at the fairgrounds.

A Douglas County Circuit Court release said graduate hopefuls Robert Nichols-Wood and Norbert Huntley are seeking paperback books and medical equipment items for the Douglas County Jail.

While incarcerated or in the Residential Substance Treatment program in the jail, providing access to books and educational materials can have a transformative effect on individuals and promote rehabilitation. Wellpath, the jail medical provider, utilizes medical equipment when available and necessary during discharge planning for clients in need of assistance at the time of release. There are a number of reasons a person may need a cane, crutches, walker or wheelchair.

Nichols-Wood and Huntley are taking this opportunity for their community project to ask for new or gently used items. Nichols-Wood said, “Books help keep my mind quiet and were the stepping-stones to the beginning of my recovery journey. Seeking medical equipment was an added bonus for the jail which will assist others in need”. Huntley said, “There is knowledge and comfort in reading books. It’s an escape and meditation for the mind, where you can relieve stress”.

Per the jail commander, books can only be paperback and need to refrain from any sexually explicit material or photos. No magazines of any kind or hard cover books will be accepted.

A donation box to drop off paperback books is located at Clint Newell Motors on Northeast Stephens Street. Grove Medical on Northwest Stewart Parkway has a drop box to accept medical equipment.

MAMMA MIA OPENING ON STAGE AT ROSEBURG HIGH SCHOOL FRIDAY

KQEN News Radio

It is time for the spring musical at Roseburg High School.

The RHS Theatre and Film Department will present “Mamma Mia!” on stage, starting this Friday night. The smash hit musical is based on the songs of ABBA. Drama instructor Troy Pennington said about 60 students are involved including actors, a live orchestra, and technology staff. Pennington said it’s a combined effort with the band program and choir program involved as well.

The plot unfolds on a small Greek island where the lead Sophie dreams of a perfect wedding – one which includes her father giving her away. The problem is she doesn’t know who her father is. Since her mother refuses to talk about her past, Sophie takes matters into her own hands. Sneaking a peek into her mother’s old diaries, she discovers three possible fathers. She secretly invites all three to the wedding. When they all turn up, it may not be as clear as she thought. Told through the legendary music of ABBA, “Mamma Mia!” has become a worldwide sensation.

The production runs through March 9th, playing Friday and Saturday nights at 7:00 p.m. and Sunday afternoons at 2:00 p.m. Tickets are $10 for adults. Students that are age 13 and under get in for $5. All students with school identification are admitted for $5.

HOYLE AND WYDEN JOIN LEGISLATION TO LOWER VA MEDICAL CARE COSTS

KQEN News Radio

On Wednesday, U.S. Representative Val Hoyle, along with Senator Ron Wyden said they are joining legislation that would make it easier for 8 million veterans in Oregon and nationwide to receive essential health care and ensure the Department of Veterans Affairs’ travel reimbursement rate keeps pace with inflation and gas prices.

Hoyle, who serves in the 4th Congressional District, said, “Our veterans have served, sacrificed and shown the ultimate commitment to our country. In return, it is our responsibility to make sure they are taken care of and can get the healthcare they need at an affordable cost”. Hoyle said, “This legislation would reduce costs for veterans traveling to doctors’ appointments, increase reimbursement rates, and is especially beneficial for the many veterans in my district who live in rural or remote communities. We have more veterans than any other district in Oregon, and I am proud to support this legislation to deliver for them.”

Wyden said, “Its unacceptable that the very people who chose to serve and defend our country are forced to choose between the cost of health care or the cost of their travel”. Wyden said, “This legislation will ensure no veterans must make that impossible and unfair choice. Let’s honor these heroes for their service by cutting their costs and providing them with the medical treatment they need – no matter where they are”.

A joint release said the Driver Reimbursement Increase for Veteran Equity Act would require the VA to ensure the beneficiary travel reimbursement rate is at least aligned with the General Services Administration reimbursement rate for federal employees using their personal vehicles for official business. Hoyle and Wyden said the legislation would also ensure timely processing to ensure veterans receive their reimbursement within 90 days.

The bill has been introduced in both the Senate and the House.
