Roseburg Area Morning News

AIR STAGNATION ADVISORY THROUGH 10:00 A.M. THURSDAY

KQEN News Radio

An Air Stagnation Advisory is in effect through 10:00 a.m. Thursday for much of southern Oregon.

Forecasters at the National Weather Service said poor air quality will continue. This is due to an inversion and stagnant air conditions near the surface that will continue to trap pollutants.

The Advisory area includes central Douglas County, Josephine and Jackson counties and eastern Curry County.

Forecasters said strong valley inversions, very shallow mixing layers of less than 1,000 feet, and calm winds are expected, especially during the overnight and morning hours. A weak front Thursday may allow for a brief period of improved mixing and particulate dispersion.

People with respiratory illness should follow their physician’s advice for dealing with high levels of air pollution during periods of stagnant air.
State air quality agencies highly recommend that no outdoor burning occurs and that residential wood burning devices be limited as much as possible.

DENSE FOG ADVISORY FOR CENTRAL DOUGLAS COUNTY

KQEN News Radio

A Dense Fog Advisory is in effect until 10:00 a.m. Tuesday for central Douglas County.

Forecasters at the National Weather Service said visibility of less than a quarter of a mile in dense fog is expected.

The Advisory applies to the valley areas including Roseburg, Sutherlin, Elkton, Camas Valley, Canyonville, Glendale and surrounding locations.

Forecasters said low visibility could make driving conditions hazardous. Motorists should slow down, use their headlights and leave plenty of distance ahead of their vehicle.

WYDEN CRITICAL OF INTERIOR DECISION ON MEDFORD CASINO

KQEN News Radio

Oregon’s U.S. Senator Ron Wyden is critical of a federal decision regarding a proposed casino in Medford.

On Friday, the U.S. Department of Interior signed a Record of Decision approving the first off-reservation casino in Oregon, which would be operated by the Coquille Tribe.

In a statement from Wyden’s office released to News Radio 93-9 FM and 1240 KQEN, the senator said, “This reckless choice by DC bureaucrat’s catapults Oregon into an uncontrolled escalation of gambling with no end in sight. And it compounds the collateral damage from this casino arms race by cavalierly tossing out our state’s time-honored agreement that balances all Tribes’ equal opportunities to achieve economic independence and prosperity”. Wyden said, “I will fight this senseless decision with all the options available, including the Congressional Review Act that empowers elected representatives to battle back against rogue federal agency decisions just like this one”.

Major Drug Bust Concludes Cocaine Investigation in Douglas County

The Roseburg Receiver

Douglas Interagency Narcotics Team (DINT) detectives wrapped up a cocaine trafficking investigation on Friday, January 10th, 2025. Working with the Douglas County Sheriff's Office, detectives executed a search warrant around 4:00 PM at a Lookingglass residence on the 2800 block of Coos Bay Wagon Road.

During the search, investigators discovered approximately 2.3 kilos (5.2 pounds) of suspected cocaine and nearly one pound of psilocybin mushrooms. They also seized multiple firearms, drug packaging materials, weighing scales, cash, and additional evidence. Several individuals were detained during the operation.

Authorities arrested Ronnie Romo, 43, of Lookingglass. He was booked into the Douglas County Jail on charges related to the possession, delivery, and manufacture of cocaine, plus possession of psilocybin, a Schedule I controlled substance.

Officials note this ranks among the area's largest cocaine seizures, reflecting a broader trend of increased cocaine activity throughout the Pacific Northwest.

DINT operates as a multi-jurisdictional task force targeting drug trafficking organizations at local, multi-state, and international levels. The team comprises members from the Douglas County Sheriff's Office, Roseburg Police Department, Oregon State Police, Douglas County District Attorney's Office, and Bureau of Land Management. Their operations receive support from the Oregon-Idaho High-Intensity Drug Trafficking Area (HIDTA) program, a counterdrug initiative funded through the Office of National Drug Control Policy.
