DENSE FOG ADVISORY THROUGH 10:00 A.M. WEDNESDAY

Article by KQEN News Radio

A Dense Fog Advisory is in effect until 10:00 a.m. Wednesday for central Douglas County.

Forecasters at the National Weather Service in Medford said visibility of one quarter mile or less in dense fog is expected.

The Advisory area includes Roseburg, Sutherlin, Myrtle Creek, Green, Glendale and surrounding areas.

Forecasters said low visibility could make driving conditions hazardous.

AIR STAGNATION ADVISORY REMAINS THROUGH 10:00 A.M. FRIDAY

Article by KQEN News Radio

An Air Stagnation Advisory remains in effect through 10:00 a.m. Friday within the valleys of Douglas, Josephine and Jackson counties.

Forecasters at the National Weather Service in Medford said poor air quality will continue. This is due to an inversion and stagnant air conditions near the surface that will continue to trap pollutants.

Poor air quality may cause issues for people with respiratory problems. Those with respiratory illness should follow their physician’s advice for dealing with high levels of air pollution during periods of stagnant air. Drivers should slow down, use their headlights, and leave plenty of distance ahead of their vehicle.

DOUGLAS COUNTY UNEMPLOYMENT RISES TO 6.5 PERCENT IN NOVEMBER

Article by KQEN News Radio

Douglas County’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate was 6.5 percent in November and 6.2 percent in September.

A State of Oregon Employment Department release said the October unemployment rate is not available since underlying data was not collected due to the federal government shutdown that month. Over the year, Douglas County’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate is up from 5.5 percent in November 2024. The Oregon rate was 5.2 percent while the U.S. rate was 4.6 percent.

Regional Economist Brian Rooney said Douglas County’s seasonally adjusted payroll employment increased by 50 jobs in November after a loss of 200 in October and a gain of 110 in September.

Rooney said in the not seasonally adjusted private-sector industries in November, there were gains of 70 in transportation, warehousing and utilities, and of 30 in both retail trade and private education and health services. There were losses of 80 in leisure and hospitality, of 50 in professional and business services, and of 30 in manufacturing.

OED said government decreased by 30 in the month of November from losses of 20 in federal government and of 10 in local government.

Rooney said when comparing November 2025 with November 2024, seasonally adjusted total nonfarm employment increased by 80 jobs or 0.2 percent. There were relatively large private-sector over-the-year gains of 260 in private education and health services and of 110 in professional and business services. There were relatively large losses of 170 in retail trade, of 140 in manufacturing, and of 40 in leisure and hospitality.

The release said government rose by 50 over the year due to gains of 70 in local education, of 20 in Indian tribal, and 10 in state government that were countered by losses of 40 in federal government and of 10 in local governments.

COUNTY GOVERNMENT OFFICES TO CLOSE FOR MARTIN LUTHER KING JR. DAY

Article by KQEN News Radio

Douglas County Commissioners Tom Kress, Chris Boice and Tim Freeman would like to remind citizens that county government offices will be closed on Monday, January 19th, in observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

A county release said that it includes offices in the courthouse on Southeast Douglas Avenue in Roseburg, as well as the County Justice Building, Courthouse Annex in Reedsport, county landfill and transfer stations, fairgrounds, and all external government offices.

Even when county government offices are closed, many officials and public employees continue on special, routine, or emergency projects. Those include the Board of Commissioners, Sheriff’s Office, Juvenile Department, Public Works Department, Emergency Management Department, museums, Parks Department and Salmon Harbor Marina.

Both the Douglas County Museum of History and Natural History in Roseburg and the Umpqua River Lighthouse Museum in Winchester Bay will be open on Monday for normal business hours. All county operated parks, campgrounds and boat ramps will continue to be open as well.

Even though the DCSO lobby entrance will be closed, deputies, 911 communications and other DCSO staff will continue to provide law enforcement protection and emergency assistance for residents. Those with an emergency can still call 911. For non-emergency situations, call DCSO at 440-4471.

SHERIFF’S OFFICE ANNOUNCES RESULTS ON ENHANCED DUII ENFORCEMENT

Article by KQEN News Radio

The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office has announced the results of enhanced DUII patrols conducted during the holiday season, which ran from December 10th through January 1st.

Drew Winkelmaier has the details: “Drew3” Q: News Radio 93-9 FM and 1240 KQEN

A DCSO release said utilizing grant dollars administered by the Oregon Department of Transportation, three deputies had a total of nineteen hours of enhanced DUII patrol time on the roadways during various times during the enforcement period. During the course of the efforts, deputies made two DUII arrests and issued four minor in possession citations.

Deputies also took these enforcement actions:

  • 1 citation for driving while suspended
  • 16 warnings for speeding
  • 5 warnings for seat belt violations
  • 21 warnings for other moving violations
  • 2 warnings for distracted driving/cell phone use

According to the Oregon Department of Transportation, pre-pandemic an average of 448 deaths and 1,739 serious injury crashes occurred on Oregon roadways. According to a 2025 update from ODOT, post-pandemic numbers between 2021 and 2023 were alarming. During those years, there were 1,789 deaths and 9,517 serious injuries reported. That is a 33 percent and 82 percent increase respectively.

The release said on average, one person was killed in a drunk driving crash every 45 minutes in 2020. That is why DCSO is working together with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and Oregon Impact to remind drivers that drunk driving is not only illegal, but it is also a matter of life and death.

DCSO’s message is Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over.
