AIR STAGNATION ADVISORY FOR MUCH OF SOUTHERN OREGON
KQEN News Radio

An Air Stagnation Advisory is in effect until 12:00 p.m. Friday for much of southern Oregon.
Forecasters at the National Weather Service said moderate to poor air quality will continue through the next few days. This is due to an inversion and stagnant air conditions near the surface that will continue to trap pollutants.
The Advisory area includes central Douglas County and its eastern foothills, Josephine and Jackson counties, eastern Curry County and the Klamath Basin.
Poor and unhealthy air quality may cause issues for people with respiratory problems.
State air quality agencies highly recommend that no outdoor burning occurs and that residential wood burning devices be limited as much as possible.

The day center will operate from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. in the church’s parish hall on Southeast Cass Avenue. This will offer a warm place for housed people without enough heat and limited emergency supplies to people without overnight shelter, according to day center operators Jacob Schlueter and Courtney Greenwalt, who are members of the church.
The day warming center is seeking additional donations: snacks, pull-tab canned food, Cup of Noodles instant soup, bottled or canned drinks, sleeping bags, tents, blankets, pillows, hats, coats, gloves and more. Cash can be contributed as well.

DISCOVERING ROSEBURG GEOCACHING EVENT FEBRUARY 1ST
KQEN News Radio

Roseburg will launch its next geocaching series on Saturday February 1st.
A City of Roseburg release said an event will offer a perfect chance for treasure-hunting adventurers to celebrate the sports 25th anniversary in its home state of Oregon.
Hosted by Roseburg Parks and Recreation, the Discover Roseburg 14 Land of Umpqua Geocache Series kick-off is a free family-friendly event to draw people of all ages outside to experience more of the city and its businesses. The kick-off will be held from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. in the large pavilion at Stewart Park on Northwest Stewart Parkway. Parks staff will give out verbal instructions and coordinate-containing passports for a geocaching treasure hunt.
Participants are asked to bring a smart phone or other device equipped with a Global Positioning System, or satellite-based radio navigation system. Using a GPS to follow coordinates printed on the passports, participants will hunt for five real-world geocaches, which are hidden around town, plus 15 virtual geocaches at a special location. Geocachers will navigate to all the spots and fill out their passports along the way. Attendees should bring a pen or pencil to sign geocache logs.
The kick-off will feature an “Ask the Expert” table staffed by Mike Baker. Baker is a former Roseburg city councilor and Parks and Recreation Commission chairperson. He first suggested that a geocaching event be held in Roseburg as a way to attract visitors.
Baker and his wife, Janice, have been geocaching for about 20 years. He will troubleshoot participants geocaching apps and help them learn how to use their GPS devices.
People who find all 20 geocaches can redeemer their passports for a limited-education collectors geocoin with a trackable ID number that will commemorate the sports 25th anniversary. Only 200 geocoins will be available. The geocache challenge will continue until all the geocoins have been awarded.
After the kick-off event, passports can be picked up or dropped off in the front lobby of Roseburg City Hall. An alternate after-hours pickup /drop off spot is the Hampton Inn and Suites on Northwest Mullholland Drive.

WYDEN SECURES COMMITTMENT FOR IRS DIRECT FILE TO CONTINUE
KQEN News Radio

On Thursday, U.S. Senator Ron Wyden announced that he has secured a commitment from Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent to continue IRS Direct File this tax filing season in Oregon and 24 other states participating in the agency’s free alternative to paid tax preparation software.
Wyden said, “This is the program that helps people who use it save hundreds of dollars when they file their tax returns”. During the Senate Finance Committee’s confirmation hearing for Bessent, Wyden said, “Its enormously popular among taxpayers. But of course, the tax software giants and their lobby just hate it”.
Wyden, the committee’s ranking member, noted that 30 million American across 25 states will be eligible to use Direct File this year when tax filing season begins on January 27th.
Wyden said Thursday’s commitment is good news for taxpayers in Oregon and nationwide weary of shelling out their hard-earned money to private software companies for what should be a public service, “…free of rip-offs”.
Wyden said, “I’ll keep watch dogging the incoming administration for make sure it keeps this promise this year, and to ensure this valuable free service remains available in future years for taxpayers working hard to make ends meet”.
