DOUGLAS COUNTY MORNING NEWS
FRONTAL SYSTEM COULD BRING LIGHT RAIN TO THE UMPQUA VALLEY
A frontal system that is offshore on Monday could bring some light rain to the Umpqua Valley later this week.
Forecasters at the National Weather Service in Medford told News Radio 93-9 FM and 1240 KQEN that a weak upper-level trough is preventing moisture on Monday. The frontal system should come in on Tuesday and could mean some light rain later in the day. An upper ridge of high pressure should lead to mild conditions this week. The persistent frontal system will lead to only a chance of rain beginning on Wednesday, with rainfall levels expected to be light. High temperatures should be in the 50s this week, possibly approaching 60 degrees later in the week.
ROSEBURG CITY COUNCIL MEETING MONDAY NIGHT

The Roseburg City Council is meeting Monday night and will begin with a special meeting at 6:45 p.m.
Councilors will consider appointing Daniel Prather to a vacant seat on the Planning Commission. Two seats are currently open. Prather will be interviewed and the council will decide whether to select him or continue to solicit for additional applicants.
The regular council meeting begins at 7:00 p.m. Mayor Larry Rich will lead a discussion on compensation for the city manager. In November, the council voted to give City Manager Nikki Messenger a 2.8 percent salary increase. During the meeting, there was a discussion regarding a past practice in which the city manager has historically received an increase, if necessary, to provide a minimum 10 percent differential between the city manager and the highest paid department head. With the highest paid department head currently receiving $14,702 a month, that would mean increasing Messenger’s salary from $15,998 a month to $16,172.20, which would move her pay increase to 3.92 percent, instead of the 2.8 percent awarded by the council.
The council will elect a council president for 2026.
Councilors will vote on a policy regarding reimbursement of legal fees related to Oregon Government Ethics Commission ethic’s complaints.
The council will consider an ordinance regarding changes to the organization of the Homeless Commission.
Other items are on the agenda as well.
The meeting will be held in the council chambers on Southeast Douglas Avenue. It can be seen on the city’s Facebook page or viewed later at www.cityofroseburg.org

SENATORS ANNOUNCE OVER $100 MILLION FOR CRITICAL COMMUNITY PROJECTS

On Friday, Oregon’s Senators Jeff Merkley and Ron Wyden announced they have secured over $100 million in federal investments for essential community-initiated projects in nearly every Oregon county in both Fiscal Year 2026 packages that have recently cleared Congress.
Both senators hold a town hall in each Oregon county every year and say they work hard to ensure that local feedback informs every aspect of their work in Washington D.C. A joint release from the lawmakers said this local feedback is directly reflected in the projects that were chosen for federal funding in the first two packages of this year’s spending bills to help meet what they believe are critical needs in Oregon communities.
Merkley said, “Community initiated projects are rooted in the fact that no one knows the unique needs of communities across Oregon like the folks living and working in them. The communities identified the top projects and we fought for them”.
Wyden said, “No-one knows what a local community needs more than the local community itself. That’s why I hold town hall meetings in every nook and cranny of the state: to hear directly from Oregonians about their needs and bring that back to D.C. to fight for these critical projects”.
The 54 Oregon community-initiated projects, combined totaling $102,692,000 secured by Merkley and Wyden, include two in Douglas County:
- $1.554 million for the South Umpqua Rural Community Partnership for their Wild Fish Habitat Restoration. Funds will be used to complete habitat and water quality restoration projects that aim to restore Chinook and Coho salmon populations in the Umpqua watershed. The restoration of these important fish species will also benefit the economies of nearby undeserved communities by opening up tourism and recreation opportunities.
- $800,000 for Glide Revitalization Community Resource Center to renovate the facility, with a focused priority on completing the daycare half of the facility. With a high demand for daycare services in the region, this center will help fill resource gaps identified through Glide Revitalization’s work since the Archie Creek Fire in 2020 to help rebuild the community.
