Roseburg Area Morning News

WINTER STORM WARNING THROUGH SATURDAY MORNING

KQEN News Radio

A Winter Storm Warning remains in effect through 10:00 a.m. Saturday for mountain areas in parts of southern Oregon.

Forecasters at the National Weather Service said heavy snow is expected. Total snow accumulations between 12 and 24 inches above 5,000 feet with up to 30 inches possible over the highest peaks and ridgetops are forecast. Winds will gust as high as 50 miles per hour.

The Warning area includes the southern Oregon Cascades and Siskiyou Mountains. It applies to highways 138 and 230 near Diamond Lake, Highway 62 near Crater Lake, Highway 140 near Lake of the Woods, Highway 58 at Willamette Pass and the Mt. Ashland Ski Road up to the resort.

Forecasters said visibility may drop below one quarter of a mile due to falling and blowing snow. The strong winds and weight of snow on tree limbs may down power lines and could cause sporadic power outages.

Snowfall rates could reach 1 inch per hour at times.

Those who must travel should keep an extra flashlight, food and water in their vehicle in case of an emergency. Call 511 or visit www.tripcheck.com for road information.

Residents should consider delaying all travel. Motorists should use extreme caution if travel is absolutely necessary.

COMMISSIONERS ISSUE FOUR CHAPLAINS DAY PROCLAMATION

KQEN News Radio

On Wednesday, Douglas County Commissioners Tim Freeman, Tom Kress and Chris Boice issued a proclamation calling upon all citizens of the county to observe Four Chaplains Day on Sunday.

A county release said Legion of Honors Awards programs across the country publicly recognize and honor outstanding members of society whose lives model the giving spirit and unconditional service to the community, nation, and humanity exemplified so dramatically by the Four Chaplains.

Commissioner Freeman presented proclamation certificates to Douglas County’s Legion of Honor Chapter Co-coordinators as well as previous Legion of Honor recipients from the county.

Newly installed Coordinator Dan Loomis went to the podium which cued a procession of friends and family of Commissioner Boice, who unbeknownst to him, were there to witness the presentation of the 2025 Legion of Honor award. Loomis said, ‘We are exceptionally pleased to give this well-deserved award which reads, “The Four Chaplains Board of Directors is pleased to present the LOF award to Chris Boice for the recognition of your lifetime of service to all people regardless of race or faith. This award symbolizes for all Americans for all time the unity of this nation”.

ROAD TO UMPQUA HOT SPRINGS CLOSED DUE TO INCOMING WEATHER

KQEN News Radio

Effective Friday, National Forest System Road 3401, the road to Umpqua Hot Springs, is closed due to the incoming winter storm.

An Umpqua National Forest release said the closed gate is located on the UNF just past the junction of NFSRs 34 and 3401.

The closure is intended to prevent vehicles from getting struck in the snow on the way to Umpqua Hot Springs, near Toketee. Closing the gate will address public safety by limiting motorized vehicle access to the parking area at the junction of NFSR’s 34 and 3401. This action is in collaboration with the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office and Toketee residents to reduce adverse impacts on DCSO and Search and Rescue personnel.

The release said visitors wanting to soak in the Umpqua Hot Springs should plan to hike, snowshoe, or ski the last 2.5 miles. Visitors should be aware that even if it’s not snowy near the gate, often roads are icy and snowy further up the road to the hot springs. In addition, if it is actively snowing, the trail can be hard to navigate for first time users. A compass, map or trail guide, is suggested to help with wayfinding.

UNF said visitors are encouraged to be prepared for adverse weather and winter road conditions when heading out to enjoy the hot springs. Temperatures at Umpqua Hot Springs range from 92 to 102 degrees. With no trash cans, and limited recreation staff in winter months, visitors are asked to practice Leave No Trace principles and pack out trash to keep the hot springs clean and natural.
