ROAD TO UMPQUA HOT SPRINGS CLOSED DUE TO INCOMING WEATHER

Article by KQEN News Radio

National Forest System Road 3401, also known as the road to Umpqua Hot Springs, is now closed due to the incoming winter storm

An Umpqua National Forest release said the closed gate is located on the Diamond Lake Ranger District, near Toketee. The closure is intended to prevent vehicles from getting stuck in the snow. Closing the gate will address public safety by limiting motorized vehicle access to the parking area at the junction of NFSR’s 34 and 3401.

Visitors wanting to soak in the Umpqua Hot Springs should plan to hike, snowshoe, or ski the last 2.5 miles. Visitors should be aware that even if it is not snowy near the gate often the road is icy or snowy further up towards the hot springs.

With no trash cans and limited recreation staff in winter months, visitors are asked to pack out trash to keep the hot springs clean and natural.

UCAN HONORING 20 YEAR PARTNERSHIP WITH SHERM’S THUNDERBIRD

Article by KQEN News Radio

The United Community Action Network is honoring its 20-year partnership with Sherm’s Thunderbird Market and the help that it has been providing to assist the work of its regional food bank.

A UCAN release said on January 15th Sherm’s will re-affirm its long-standing commitment to fighting hunger by donating a truckload of food to the organization’s food bank.

Since the partnership began in 2006, Sherm’s Thunderbird has donated more than half a million pounds of food to UCAN over time. While each truckload varies year to year, Sherm’s donations have averaged around 25,000 pounds per annual delivery, providing critical support to UCAN’s countywide emergency food system and helping ensure local pantries across Douglas County have food on their shelves. Through this truckload delivery to UCAN Food Bank, the non-profit organization is able to bypass typical wait times associated with standard food orders, allowing food to move more quickly onto pantry shelves and into the hands of those experiencing hunger.

UCAN Food Bank Program Manager Valerie Gordon said, “We are deeply grateful for Sherm’s Thunderbird and the Olsrud family’s continued generosity and dedication”. Gordon said, “Their consistent support has made a lasting difference for the families we serve and allows us to get food onto shelves quickly, ensuring timely access for households across our region. Together we are feeding families and strengthening our community”.
