ROSEBURG MAN DIES IN SINGLE VEHICLE WRECK
KQEN News Radio

A Roseburg man died in a single vehicle wreck early Wednesday morning.
A Douglas County Sheriff’s Office report said at approximately 5:40 a.m. deputies responded along with Central Douglas Fire & Rescue to the 3100 block of Melrose Road, west of Roseburg. Undersheriff Brad O’Dell said responders found a vehicle that had gone into a tree with the driver not breathing.
O’Dell said it appears that 53-year-old Raymond Douglas Schlatter was on his way to a job site as the sole occupant of a pickup, along with his dog. Schlatter’s vehicle was apparently eastbound when it drifted off the left side of the roadway and struck a large oak tree about fifteen off the road just below a steep embankment. There were no skid marks or other indications of slowing the impact.
O’Dell said Schlatter was seat belted and there was airbag deployment. A medical examiner responded to the scene. There were no signs of drug or alcohol use as a factor in the crash. Next of kin was notified and the vehicle was towed.
FIREFIGHTERS CONTINUE TO MAKE PROGRESS ON 72 FIRES: JACKSON/JOSEPHINE COUNTIES
KQEN News Radio

Firefighters are continuing aggressive suppression action across all fires in Jackson and Josephine counties, the majority of which were caused by lightning strikes following thunderstorms Monday night.
A release from the Bureau of Land Management Medford District and the Oregon Department of Forestry Southwest Oregon District said the fire count remains at 72 total between the two counties, with numerous fires already caught and extinguished at small sizes. Public Information Officer Natalie Weber said the remaining fires are staffed with resources and progress continues to be made across the board despite the hot and windy conditions, which can naturally fuel growth.
Weber said the ODF Complex Incident Management Team 3 was in-briefed by the local district Wednesday afternoon and is preparing to take a portion of the fires off the district’s plate on Thursday morning.
The two largest fires are the Neil Creek Road Fire, west of Interstate Five south of Ashland, and the Deming Gulch Fire, located northeast of Buncom. Both are currently estimated at 250 acres.
High fire danger remains in effect on ODF-protected land in Jackson and Josephine counties. For more information on fires in the ODF Southwest Oregon District go to www.swofire.com or check the agencies’ social media channels.

H.O.P.E. DRUG COURT PARTICIPANT IS HELPING SAVING GRACE HUMANE SOCIETY
KQEN News Radio

A participant in the H.O.P.E. Drug Court program has chosen to support Saving Grace Humane Society as part of his Graduate Community Project called, “No Companion Left Behind”
A Douglas County Circuit Court release said the efforts are focused on collecting much-needed dog and cat food, as well as monetary donations to benefit the shelter and the animals in its care.
Participant Erik Andersen said, “My graduate project involving donations for Saving Grace is important to me because when everything else seemed to fall apart, my dogs were there to cheer me up without judgement or disappointment. All they needed was my love and attention”. Andersen said, “It’s great to come home to dogs that just can’t wait to see you. No matter what I was going through, I think all pet owners can relate to why this project is important”.
Anderson has three community partner drop-off locations for contributing dog or cat food:
- Clint Newell Motors on Northeast Stephens Street
- Grocery Outlet on Garden Valley Boulevard
- Mountain Mike’s Pizza on West Harvard Avenue
The project will continue through July 30th
H.O.P.E. Drug Court will celebrate its 110th graduation on Tuesday, August 26th at 5:15 p.m. in the Cascade Hall building at the fairgrounds.
