Roseburg Area Morning News

FIRE WEATHER WATCH FOR UMPQUA BASIN

KQEN News Radio

A Fire Weather Watch is in place for the Umpqua Basin from Wednesday evening through Thursday morning for abundant lightning on dry fuels.

This could result in the potential for new fire starts.

Forecasters at the National Weather Service in Medford said isolated to scattered thunderstorms with dry lightning are possible. Forecasters said storms are likely to be wet, but lightning strikes outside of precipitation cores are possible and a cause for concern.

Wind gusts of 35 to 50 miles per hour could travel outward up to 25 miles from thunderstorm cores.

Forecasters told News Radio 93-9 FM and 1240 KQEN that while most of the thunderstorm activity is expected to be closer to the Cascades, there is still the potential for a few storm cells to reach the Roseburg area.

The NWS Fire Weather Message said residents should follow all fire restrictions and avoid activities that could cause sparks.

STATE POLICE JAIL MAN FOR REPORTED MENACING INCIDENT

KQEN News Radio

Troopers with the Oregon State Police jailed a man following a reported menacing incident on Sunday afternoon.

An OSP report said just before 5:00 p.m. troopers were dispatched to Interstate 5 northbound in the Weaver Road area after a caller said there had been a past domestic violence incident. The reporting party stated that a family member was a passenger in a semi-truck and traveling with a man who had physically assaulted her two days earlier while they were in California. After multiple attempts by the reporting party to convince the woman to contact 911, the caller finally did it herself.

Shortly after this, the male pulled his semi into the truck stop off exit 119. Troopers located the male driver and the female passenger. The female had multiple bruises to her face, head, neck and arms. She had two black eyes, and her face appeared slightly swollen. The woman said she was fearful the man was going to unexpectedly snap and assault her again.

The male denied any involvement and claimed the woman had been drinking, was on medications and had mental issues. Both admitted they were in an intimate relationship.

The man was charged with menacing and was detained without bail. He was released on Monday. The female was provided services by medical providers and advocates.

UMPQUA RIVER LIGHTHOUSE, MUSEUM AND GIFT SHOP RECEIVES AWARD

KQEN News Radio

The Douglas County Board of Commissioners, Tim Freeman, Tom Kress and Chris Boice, along with Museum Director James Davis, have announced that the Umpqua River Lighthouse, Museum and Gift Shop has been recognized with a Tripadvisor Travelers’ Choice Award for 2025, achieving distinction in the top 10 percent of all listings on Tripadvisor in the world.

Commissioner Tom Kress said, “The breathtaking overlook above Winchester Bay is home to our Umpqua River Lighthouse, Museum, Gift Shop, Art Gallery and whale watching area. It is truly for Douglas County and our citizens”. Kress said, “Beyond the fact that I think it is one of the best properties in Oregon, this gem represents a collective of individuals who have fought hard to keep it alive and prospering for over 128 years”.

County Museum Director James Davis said, “We are incredibly honored to receive the Travelers’ Choice Award – one of the most respected and sought-after recognitions in the travel industry”. Davis said, “Being named among travelers’ favorites this year is both humbling and deeply meaningful to us”.

The Umpqua River Lighthouse was constructed in 1894, and its light was lit for the first time on December 31st of that year. The lighthouse was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1977.

MERKLEY, WYDEN ANNOUNCE OVER $9.6 MILLION HEADING TO OREGON

KQEN News Radio

Oregon’s U.S. Senators Jeff Merkley and Ron Wyden announced on Monday that the U.S. Forest Service is investing over $9.6 million in 17 projects in Oregon to boost the creation of innovative wood products, develop more markets for uses of mass timber and renewable wood energy, and increase the capacity of wood process and manufacturing facilities.

The lawmakers said that federal funding is critical to ensuring the state’s leadership in the wood products industry, while helping to restore healthy forests and reduce wildfire risk.

Merkley said, “Oregon has the best wood products in the world, and federal funding opportunities like the Wood Innovations Program help keep our state at the forefront of timber innovation while uplighting our rural communities”. Merkley previously introduced the bipartisan Mass Timber Federal Building Act to promote the use of mass timber in federal building projects and military construction.

Wyden said, “Our state is leading the way to a better, safer, and more energy-efficient future in Oregon and nationwide by drawing a robust blueprint for the success of mass timber and renewable wood energy”. Wyden said the federal investments add up to one big win for Oregon when it comes to supporting that goal of bringing jobs, a better economy and reduced threats of wildfire.
