RED FLAG WARNING FOR PARTS OF SOUTHERN OREGON STARTS WEDNESDAY AFTERNOON

KQEN News Radio

A Red Flag Warning is in effect from 2:00 p.m. through 11:00 p.m. Wednesday for a wide area of southern Oregon including the Southern Oregon Cascades, parts of the Rogue Valley, the Umpqua National Forest and surrounding areas, for abundant lightning on dry fuels.

An Urgent Fire Weather Message from the National Weather Service said this will result in the potential for new fire starts. Outflow winds are expected to gust 35 to 50 miles per hour and could travel outward up to 25 miles from thunderstorm cores.

A Red Flag Warning means forecasters have identified weather conditions that promote rapid spread of fire which may become life threatening.

CITY LAUNCHES ONLINE PORTAL AUGUST 1ST

KQEN News Radio

Builders, business owners, and residents will soon have access to an online portal providing a one-stop shop for City of Roseburg services connected to planning and zoning, business registrations and code enforcement.

A city release said partnering with OpenGov.com, Roseburg is launching the “City of Roseburg Online Portal” on Friday, August first.

The new applicant portal to OpenGov.com’s public service platform was designed for Roseburg to give local businesses, builders, homeowners and other residents an online place to apply for and track:

  • Site plan reviews
  • Land-use reviews
  • Pre-application meetings
  • Business registrations
  • Municipal Code enforcement

Community Development Director Stuart Cowie said, “We are making the change to OpenGov to help make the permitting process more efficient, both internally and for our customers”. Cowie said, “Customers will be able to utilize an online permitting portal, which will enable them to submit plans online directly to our department. It will save them from having to come into our office”.

Builders, residents and business owners can sign up now for this new online service, which will save time compared to submitting applications in person and also speed up tracking a project by eliminating the need for phone calls.

Anyone who experiences challenges using the new portal once it opens, can come in for help or call Community Development at 492-6750.

SENATE BILL 95 BRINGS A NEW JUDGE TO DOUGLAS COUNTY

KQEN News Radio

On July 24th, Governor Kotek signed Senate Bill 95 into law. The legislation creates new judicial positions for Douglas, Lane and Clackamas counties.

A Douglas County Circuit Court release said the number of elected judges in Douglas County has not been increased in at least four decades. A request that Douglas County receive a new judge has been included in proposed legislation consistently since 2017.

Presiding Judge Kathleen Johnson said at the time Senate Bill 95 was proposed, Oregon Judicial Branch’s Judicial Workload Study showed that Douglas County needed three additional judges in order to properly adjudicate the number of cases being filed.

Johnson said the judges of Douglas County Circuit Court extend their appreciation to those legislators who recognized the need for additional judicial resources in Douglas County and voted in favor of Senate Bill 95.
