A Red Flag Warning is in effect for portions of the Southern Oregon Cascades and surrounding areas from 2:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Thursday for abundant lightning on dry fuels.
An Urgent Fire Message from the National Weather Service said this will result in the potential for new fire starts.
Forecasters said scattered thunderstorms in the afternoon and evening are expected. Storms are likely to be wet, but lightning strikes outside of precipitation cores are possible, and a cause for concern.
Wind gusts of 35 to 50 miles per hour could travel outward up to 25 miles from thunderstorm cores.
Residents should follow all fire restrictions.

OVERNIGHT HARVARD AVENUE STORMWATER PROJECT STARTS NEXT WEEK
KQEN News Radio

An overnight stormwater improvement project designed to increase capacity will start on a four-block stretch of West Harvard Avenue beginning on Monday, August 4th.
A City of Roseburg release said traffic will be reduced to one lane in both directions from 7:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. Mondays through Thursdays on West Harvard between West Ballf Street and West Umpqua Street. Storm pipe installation will take place in the evening and overnight and will not have an impact on daytime traffic.
Detours will be set up to route vehicles around the nighttime work zone until the project is completed in October, according to the Roseburg Public Works Department.
Storm drainage pipes are being replaced with about 1,050 linear feet of 30-inch-diameter storm pipe and 300 feet of 12-inch-diameter storm pipe so the system can handle more stormwater. The work will also install four new storm manholes and replace six storm drain inlets and two sidewalk ramps to comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act.
The release said the 2011 Roseburg Storm Water Master Plan identified the area west of Interstate 5 and east of West Keady Court as a problem area where the storm water system is under capacity.
The city has been upgrading that part of the system in phases since 2014.
For more information regarding the project contact the Roseburg Public Works Department at 492-6730 or email: pwd@roseburgor.gov
BLM TIMBER SALES IN OREGON BRING IN NEARLY $13.5 MILLION
KQEN News Radio

July Bureau of Land Management timber sales in Oregon brought in nearly $13.5 million, supporting local jobs, local economies and sustainable forest management.
A BLM release said the agency sold 47.7 million board feet of timber across 1,673 public acres for over $13.49 million in revenue. These timber sales will feed local mills and are enough timber to build roughly 3,000 homes.
Acting BLM Director Bill Groffy said, “Timber from BLM-managed forests is fueling jobs, industry, and economic growth across western Oregon”. Groffy said, “These sales reflect our commitment to managing public lands in a way that strengthens rural communities, supports working forests and ensures the responsible use of America’s natural resources”.
The release said the timber sales align with the Trump administration’s emphasis on maximizing the use of domestic resources, supporting rural economies and promoting American energy and materials independence. By accelerating active forest management and increasing access to public lands for responsible resource development, the BLM is helping meet national goals for job creation, reduced regulatory burdens and stronger supply chains for critical industries like homebuilding and timber production.
The Roseburg District offered two sales near Oakland:
The Mean Mustard timber sale was 2.2 million board feet in 132 public acres, It was sold to Diamond J Timber Services of Drain for $333,176.
*The Sternbreaker timber sale was 6.9 million board feet in 247 public acres. It was sold to Rosboro Company LLC of Springfield for $1,725,397.
Sales also took place in the Northwest Oregon District, the Medford District and the Coos Bay District.
In western Oregon, the BLM manages 2.4 million acres of public forest.
