Roseburg Area Morning News

DFPA DEALING WITH ROUND TOP FIRE EAST OF ROSEBURG

KQEN News Radio

Crews with the Douglas Forest Protective Association are dealing with the Round Top Fire east of Roseburg.

A DFPA post said the agency along with rural firefighters and landowner resources are engaged on an estimated 7 to 8-acre fire located near the 10000 block of North Umpqua Highway. The fire began late Sunday afternoon and was 100 percent dozer lined by early evening. Crews are continuing to strengthen lines and mop up the fire. Smoke is being seen in the area as work continues.

No structures are threatened by the Round Top Fire. It’s cause is under investigation. More information is expected later Monday from DFPA.

MONDAY LIKELY HOTTEST DAY OF WEEK, COOLING TO COME

KQEN News Radio

Monday will likely be the hottest day of the week in the Umpqua Valley, with some cooling coming as the week goes on.

Forecasters at the National Weather Service in Medford told News Radio 93-9 FM and 1240 KQEN that the Roseburg area will see highs in the mid-90s Monday. Afternoon highs will lower gradually to closer to seasonal norms by Wednesday and Thursday. The normal high temperature for this week in Roseburg is 84 degrees. Conditions will again heat up into the 90s starting on Friday and should remain hot for at least ten days.

The mercury got to 90 degrees at the Roseburg Regional Airport on Sunday.

DRIVER CITED FOLLOWING TWO-VEHICLE CRASH ON FRIDAY

KQEN News Radio

A driver was cited following a two-vehicle crash on Friday.

A Douglas County Sheriff’s Office report said 11:40 a.m. the 71-year-old Roseburg was driving westbound in the 2300 block of North Bank Road northeast of Roseburg while a 48-year-old Sutherlin man was headed eastbound in a sedan. The first driver fell asleep at the wheel and his SUV swerved into the other vehicle’s lane, causing the two to crash into each other.

A passenger in the second vehicle suffered some neck and back injuries which were not life threatening. The woman who caused the wreck was cited for careless driving. Both vehicles were towed from the scene.

HAPPY TRAILS DOG PARK TO REOPEN ONCE FENCING IS REPLACED

KQEN News Radio

Happy Trails Dog Park will reopen this summer after fencing is replaced.

A City of Roseburg release said a contractor is scheduled to start work in about two weeks to replace 730 feet of fencing that was mangled in the one-acre space next to Templin Beach Park, on Southeast Templin Avenue.

The dog park has been temporarily closed after suffering damage from flooding by the South Umpqua River during record rainfall on March 16th. The fencing around the park was completely destroyed and the flood left water and debris in the park.

Public Works Director Ryan Herinckx said, “That park got hit pretty hard”. Herinckx said this happened just as parks staff needed to get baseball and softball fields ready for spring games.

Since the storm, Public Works and Parks crews have been working throughout the community to first assess damage, then determine priorities and either perform repairs or hire contractors.

Roseburg Public Works priorities began with ensuring the integrity and safety of roads, intersections and culverts; maintaining or repairing damaged sections of the public storm drainage system; and removing debris and sand left in several parks and across the multiuse Umpqua River Trail.

The release said that contractors, including fence installation companies, have been in high demand following the flooding as government agencies, businesses and local residents have worked to recover from the storms.

At the dog park, staff removed debris, trimmed trees, and cut down two trees whose root structures were undermined by the flood. Parks staff have been making landscape improvements and have cleaned up the park entryway. Staff also set a table and two benches upright and put them back into place.

Parks Superintendent Shanna Epperson said staff have been doing this work before the fence goes in. Crews will continue to clean the parking lot area as well.

Fencing work should start by July 21st and be finished by the end of the month. The dog park is set to reopen immediately after.

Park repairs, including new fencing installation, will cost approximately $15,000.

MOVIES IN THE PARK RESCHEDULED

KQEN News Radio

Roseburg Parks and Recreation has announced a new show time for one of this summer’s “Movies in the Park” that got rained out in June.

Disney’s “Moana2” has been rescheduled for Friday, August 15th. Rain canceled the show on Friday, June 20th.

The PG-rated animated film will be shown at the Nichols Band Shell in Stewart Park. Pre-show entertainment will begin at 7:00 p.m. when the Halau Hula Aulani Polynesian Dancers will perform. The movie begins at dusk.

Roseburg Parks and Recreation cosponsors the free series with Rogue Credit Union, which will offer free ice cream at the event while supplies last. Some free tickets to drive through at Wildlife Safari will be given away.

Concessions for sale will include popcorn, cotton candy, and other treats.

Alcohol and tobacco use are not allowed in the park. Pets are not permitted.  Children under age 13 must be accompanied by an adult.

For more information, call Parks and Recreation at 492-6730.
