RIDDLE MAN ARRESTED FOLLOWING HOUR-LONG STANDOFF
KQEN News Radio

A Riddle man was arrested following an approximately hour long standoff in Myrtle Creek on Tuesday night.
A release from the Myrtle Creek Police Department said at about 9:45 p.m. police were called to the area of First Avenue and Northeast Oak Street for a reported disorderly subject. Detective Kevin Taggart said numerous callers were saying the male was hitting vehicles with a crowbar, yelling and screaming. Taggart said officers arrived to find a man they recognized as 42-year-old Shawn Patzer sitting in his van. Patzer had thrown numerous rocks into the roadway for about a block and a half radius.
Taggart said Patzer exited his vehicle with a crowbar, picked up a rock and started to approach an MCPD officer. After being challenged and commanded to drop everything and told that he was under arrest, Patzer then reportedly dropped the rock and headed back to his vehicle, even after being told he was under arrest several times.
Taggart said Patzer got back into his vehicle and refused to come out with his hands up. Numerous Douglas County Sheriff’s Office deputies, including a crisis negotiator, arrived to assist at the scene along with A DCSO K-9. Patzer eventually exited the vehicle and was taken into custody without further incident. No one was injured.
Patzer was taken to the Douglas County Jail and charged with second-degree disorderly conduct and third-degree escape. He is detained on $8,750 bail. Taggart said more charges are pending and the investigation is ongoing.
Taggart said MCPD is asking anyone who saw Patzer in that area prior to the standoff to contact police at 440-4471. Anyone who had vehicle damage caused during the incident should contact MCPD as well.
The Cow Creek Tribal Police also assisted with the incident.
This was the second police stand off in Myrtle Creek in a two-day period.
AGGRESSIVE INITIAL ATTACK CONTINUES ON LIGHTNING-CAUSED FIRES IN SOUTHWEST OREGON
KQEN News Radio

Firefighters are continuing an aggressive initial attack on numerous fires caused by thunderstorms Monday night in the Oregon Department of Forestry Southwest Oregon District.
Public Information Officer Natalie Weber said significant progress has been made on the largest fires initially identified. Weber said crews are also responding to multiple new reports of fires which came in on Tuesday across Jackson and Josephine counties. 72 fires on ODF-protected land have been confirmed by reconnaissance flights, detection cameras and firefighters.
Weber said due to the sheer volume of incidents, the potential for additional holdover fires and more predicted dry thunderstorms in Jackson County, the district has ordered ODF Complex Incident Management Team 3, which will mobilize from ODF Districts across Oregon on Wednesday. With direction from the district, the team will take command of a portion of the fires to free up local resources, bring in additional expertise and personnel, as well as give local firefighters a short reprieve before returning to initial attack readiness.
The Douglas Forest Protective Association is among the agencies assisting in Southwest Oregon. Public Information Officer Rachel Pope said DFPA is sufficiently staffed within the district to responded to any events that may occur locally.
High fire danger is in effect on ODF-protected land in Jackson and Josephine counties. Get the latest information on fires in the Southwest Oregon District at: https://swofire.com/ or follow the agency on social media.

MERKLEY, HOYLE FIGHT TRUMP FUNDING CUTS WITH RENEWED EFFORT TO REDUCE WILDFIRE RISK
KQEN News Radio

Oregon Senator Jeff Merkley and Representative Val Hoyle have teamed up to introduce the Wildfire Resilient Communities Act in Congress.
A joint release said the legislation would provide dedicated federal support to reduce the risk of catastrophic wildfires in Oregon and across the West, while also empowering communities to prepare for wildfires.
Merkley said, “You can’t get ready after the fire starts”. Merkley said, “Our bill would ensure communities can seize every moment to prepare for and mitigate wildfires by supercharging investments in critical hazardous fuels projects”. Merkley said, “Increasingly extreme wildfire seasons fueled by climate chaos are not cooling down anytime soon, and we need a considerable increase in federal resources – not cuts – to make our forests, timber economies, and communities healthier and more resilient”.
Hoyle said, “I’m proud to join Senator Merkley in introducing this bill to reduce wildfire risk and strengthen forest dependent communities”. Hoyle said, “Year after year, wildfires have devastated our towns, economies and forests. This legislation invests in prevention, resilience, and local jobs – because protecting our communities shouldn’t stop at putting out fires” Hoyle said, “It starts with smart, proactive stewardship, and that’s’ exactly what this bill delivers”.
The release said the Wildfire Resilient Communities Act would double down on essential efforts to boost wildfire preparedness by creating a $30 billion fund to allow the U.S. Forest Service, Bureau of Land Management and other land management agencies to increase catastrophic wildfire reduction projects, reauthorize and triple funding up to $3 billion for the Community Wildfire Defense Grant Program, permanently reauthorizes the Collaborative Forest Landscape Restoration Program, which the lawmakers believe is critical for the five collaboratives in Oregon, and create a County Stewardship Fund that would provide payments to counties for stewardship contracts on federal land.
The full text of the legislation can be found here.
