DINT CONCLUDES LONG-TERM INVESTIGATIONS WITH TWO ARRESTS
KQEN News Radio

Douglas County Sheriff’s Office detectives conducted a traffic stop on Hanson as he was traveling on Interstate 5 near the Boomer Hill Exit 110 in the Myrtle Creek area. K-9 Trapper was also present at the traffic stop.
During the stop, a search of Hanson and his vehicle allegedly revealed approximately 55.7 grams of suspected methamphetamine.

FIRE CREWS RESPOND TO GRASS FIRE WEDNESDAY
KQEN News Radio

Crews with Central Douglas Fire & Rescue and other agencies responded to a grass fire northwest of Roseburg on Wednesday afternoon.
CDF&R Battalion Chief Mitch Doss said just after 2:00 p.m. the fire which had been started by an unattended burn barrel, was reported in the 700 block of River Bend Road, off Fisher Road. Doss said initial reports indicated that the fire was a quarter of an acre in size and spreading to nearby structures.
The first responders to the scene found an active grass fire that had spread to a nearby outbuilding. Shortly after the crews began working on the fire, multiple propane tanks that were stored in a nearby outbuilding began to explode. This caused the fire to rapidly spread to two adjacent structures and threaten multiple nearby homes.
Doss said a large amount of effort was put towards keeping the crews safe from the multiple hazards present in the area while containing the fire to the three involved structures. Once the forward spread of the fire had been stopped, crews transitioned into extinguishment.
CDF&R responded to the incident with eight pieces of equipment and two command units, totaling 16 paid and volunteer personnel. Crews from the Roseburg Fire Department, Douglas Forest Protective Association and Pacific Power assisted at the scene.
Doss said CDF&R would like to remind residents that fire season is now in effect. Open burning including debris piles and burn barrels are always prohibited.
COMMISSION TO CONSIDER CHANGES FOR 2025 OREGON COASTAL FALL CHINOOK SALMON SEASON
KQEN News Radio

The Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife Commission will have a regular meeting on Friday in Pendleton.
Among items on the agenda, the commission will be asked to adopt rules establishing regulation changes for the 2025 Oregon Coast Wild Fall Chinook Salmon in state-managed waters. This would include the Umpqua River from July 1st through November 30th.
A Douglas County government release said Commissioner Chris Boice plans to attend the meeting in person to encourage the commission to reconsider this decision and look at what he believes would be the devastating economic impacts it will have on Douglas County residents and businesses.
Commissioners are encouraging residents, fishing guides, businesses, outdoor enthusiasts, anglers and the fishing community to flood the inboxes of ODFW and their commission with comments and opinions on the possible closure.
Residents can submit written comments on the agenda here.

GOP URGE ODFW TO KEEP CHINOOK SALMON FISHING SEASON OPEN
KQEN News Radio

Coastal Senate and House Republicans are urging the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife Commission to keep the chinook salmon fishing season open on the Umpqua River.
A release from State Senator Dick Anderson of Lincoln City said while ODFW is anticipating a good fall fishing season for Chinook and Coho in most coastal basins, some lawmakers are growing concerned about the potential for the Chinook salmon fishing to be heavily restricted on the Umpqua River for the 2025 season. ODFW’s abundance estimates for 2024 show an alarming return of just 1,318 – well under the projected return of 3,360 and the lowest on record.
Given these concerning return rates, the ODFW Commission is anticipating public input this Friday on a potential to halt Chinook salmon fishing throughout much of the Umpqua River in an effort to help the population rebound. Under the proposal, bank fishing for hatchery Chinook would remain open below Highway 101.
Senator Anderson along with State Senator David Brock Smith of Port Orford, Representative Boomer Wright of Reedsport and Representative Virgle Osborne of Roseburg have issued a joint statement urging the Commission to take into consideration the impact a halt to Chinook salmon fishing would have on anglers, guides, small businesses, and all those who enjoy the Umpqua River from Roseburg to the Coast.
The lawmakers said, “Anglers, guides, and small business owners should not suffer due to the failed forest management and climate policies in Oregon by the majority party. When forest management is neglected and wildfires are allowed to burn, our forest canopies disappear, and water temperatures rises”. The statement continued, “These rising temperatures have an extreme negative impact on our rivers and salmon populations and benefit invasive species such as smallmouth bass that feed on them”. The lawmakers concluded; The unintended consequences of failed policies require a new direction. In the meantime, we trust the scientists at ODFW to help carve the best path forward in the short term that will balance a healthy Chinook salmon population with Oregon anglers, guides and communities who reply on it”.
UCAN ANNOUNCES THE RETURN OF POURING GENEROSITY
KQEN News Radio

The Umpqua Community Action Network has announced the return of Pouring Generosity.
A UCAN release said the two- month campaign running in July and August is sponsored by Umpqua Bank. Now in its eighth year, it invites community members to support the Douglas County Emergency Food System by visiting participating wineries, local beer breweries and new this year – coffee brewers. The goal of the campaign is to raise $20,000 to help fight hunger across Douglas County.
UCAN Food Bank Manager Val Gordon said there are multiple businesses participating, each with their own unique way of generating donations for Pouring Generosity. Gordon said, “This year we have seen a record number of people accessing emergency food. With so many people in need, it is great to see so many local businesses stepping up to help”. Gordon said, “They are truly feeding hope in our community”.
As part of the Oregon Food Bank statewide network, the UCAN Food Bank has more buying power when it comes to food. For every $1 contributed, they can leverage 3 meals or 4-5 pounds of food.

CHI MERCY HEALTH WOUND CENTER/CENTENNIAL HOSTS PAD SCREENING
KQEN News Radio

CHI Mercy Health’s Center for Wound Healing and Centennial Interventional Radiology are partnering to provide Peripheral Artery Disease or PAD screening open to all community members.
A Mercy release said this will take place on Saturday, June 21st from 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 pm. at Mercy’s Center for Wound Healing located on the first floor at 2700 Northwest Stewart Parkway in Roseburg.
PAD is a widespread health concert with serious consequences but can be screened for easily.
- Millions are affected. It impacts 12-14 percent of people worldwide and 8 million Americans
- Age and diabetes increase risk: 20 percent of those age 75 and over and one in three diabetics over age 50 have PAD
- Smoking is a huge risk: It’s responsible for about 150,000 lower-limb amputations in the U.S. annually.
- People should be aware of silent PAD as up to half those with PAD may not have symptoms.
Those who should do a PAD screening are people who are over age 70, over age 50 and smoke or have diabetes, and those under age 50 but have diabetes and other PAD risk factors, such as smoking, high cholesterol or high blood pressure.
To schedule a screening on June 21st, call Mercy’s Center for Wound Healing at 677-4501.
