TRIBAL ROOTS HORTICULTURE PROGRAM LAUNCHES IN ROSEBURG

KQEN News Radio

The Cow Creek Band of Umpqua Tribe of Indians, in collaboration with the Oregon State University Extension Service Douglas County, has announced the launch of the Tribal Roots Horticulture Program.

An Extension release said it is a free, bi-monthly educational series designed for tribal families.

Beginning on Tuesday, June 17th, the program will be held on the third Tuesday and last Saturday of each month, from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the Agricultural Learning Center on River Forks Park Road, northwest of Roseburg.

This field-based workshop series will focus on:

  • Sustainable crop production
  • Traditional ecological knowledge
  • Food preservation techniques

The program will offer participants the opportunity to deep their connection to the land, preserve cultural traditions, and develop practical agricultural skills in a supportive, community-centered environment.

Program coordinator Dustin Looney said, “This initiative is about more than agriculture – it’s about stewardship, heritage, and resilience”. Looney said, “We invite tribal families to join us in cultivating both the land and our shared cultural roots”. Looney will be joined by OSU Extension Service Small Farms Program Coordinator Logan Bennett. This will be the second long-form educational program the two organizations have collaborated on since Bennett joined Extension in 2022.

Registration is free and open to all tribal families. To register, contact Dustin Looney at 492-5289 or via email at: dustin.looney@cowcreek-nsn.gov

Saving Grace Humane Society receives 50k grant

The News Review

Saving Grace Humane Society received a $50,000 grant from nonprofit Petco Love in late April to support the society’s animal sheltering and advocacy efforts, according to a June 5 press release.

Jennifer Barta, Saving Grace Humane Society’s executive director, said in the press release that the grant money will be essential to the organization’s work moving forward.

“This investment is critical to our lifesaving efforts in Douglas County,” Barta said.

The funds will be used to increase resources that allow pet owners to keep their pets at home and off the streets. Continued vaccine, microchip and spay and neuter clinics at reduced costs, behavioral and training opportunities and the organization’s pet food bank are some of these resources.

Every dollar counts for the organization, as it costs around $3,800 per day and $1.4 million per year to keep their doors open, according to Barta. The organization has also been under increased pressure since the COVID-19 pandemic, as spay and neuter programs were paused during that time, leading to an increase in stray animals.

Susanne Kogurt, president of Petco Love, said in the press release that supporting these programs serves their life-saving mission.

“Our investment … powers local organizations across the country as part of our commitment to create a future in which no pet is unnecessarily euthanized,” Kogurt said.

Barta said those interested in helping Saving Grace should consider monetary donations, supply donations and fostering.
