Roseburg Area Morning News

BLM PREPARES FOR PRESCRIBED FIRE NEAR GLIDE

KQEN News Radio

The Bureau of Land Management, Roseburg District, is preparing for a 122-acre prescribed burn within the North Umpqua Management Area, approximately six miles west of Glide off North Bank Road.

A BLM release said fire ignitions may begin as early as Monday, if conditions are favorable. Local systems may be impacted, including the west entrance parking lot, Blacktail Ridge Trail, Middle Ridge Trail, Chasm Creek Road, Thistle Ridge Trail and North Gate Trail. The public is advised to practice caution, as increased equipment and personnel traffic may be present.

The primary objectives for the operations are to increase the quantity and quality of forage, reduce invasive species, create a more fire-resilient landscape and restore oak woodlands. BLM said prescribed fire is one of the most important tools used to reduce wildfire risk to local communities and wildlife habitats.

BLM officials coordinate with the Oregon Department of Forestry’s smoke management program to burn during weather conditions that minimize the amount of smoke in local communities. Smoke from the burn may be visible from Glide and other nearby locations.

During prescribed burns, smoke may settle in low-lying areas overnight.

  • Residents are encouraged to close windows at night to avoid smoke impacts
  • When driving in smoky areas, motorists should slow down and turn on headlights.

The burn is being accomplished with cooperation with the Douglas Forest Protective Association, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Services, Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife, Umpqua National Forest, Wolf Creek Job Corp. and the Oregon Conservation Corps of the Umpqua Valley.

REEDSPORT MAIN STREET GRANT IMPACTS 8 PROJECT SITES

KQEN News Radio

The City of Reedsport Main Street Program has received a $400,000 grant from Oregon Heritage, a division of the Oregon Parks and Recreation Department. Oregon Heritage has awarded 35 matching grants worth over $10.6 million to Oregon Main Street Network organizations across the state for building projects that will strengthen local economies. Projects range from façade improvement to basic facilities and housing with awards ranging from $17,900 to $400,000.

Reedsport’s Main Street received grants for 8 project sites. This includes three locations in Rainbow Plaza where work will include roof repair, doors, canopy, stucco, concrete repair, electrical repair and updates. Façade and awning work will take place at a property on Greenwood Avenue. One building on North 4th Street will get a new sign, while a second building will receive an awning, second floor expansion and flooring. Electrical repair will take place at a property on Fir Avenue while plumbing and electrical work and a heat pump is planned for a building on East Railroad Avenue.

The department funded Oregon Main Street Revitalization Grant applications that best conveyed the ability to stimulate private investment and local economic development, fit within the community’s long-range plan for downtown vitality, and community need.

The grant program was created during the 2015 legislative session and placed with the Oregon State Historic Preservation Office. The legislation established a permanent fund for the Oregon Main Street Grant, with an initial infusion of funds from the from the sale of lottery bonds. The program also requires that at least 50 percent of the funds go to rural communities as defined in the bill.

CDF&R RECEIVES HIGH-TECH WATER RESCUE EQUIPMENT THROUGH GRANT

KQEN News Radio

The Oregon Department of Emergency Management has announced the delivery of advanced water rescue equipment to two Oregon communities as part of the State Preparedness and Incident Response Equipment grant program.

An OEM release said Central Douglas Fire & Rescue and the City of Grants Pass have each received an Emergency Integrated Lifesaving Lanyard – known as E.M.I.L.Y – a swift water rescue device designed to support life-saving efforts in dangerous water conditions. These compact, remote-controlled, battery-powered devices can travel through swift current to bring a flotation device to a person in distress, making them a vital tool for rapid water rescue.

CDF&R Fire Chief Rob Bullock said the district is thankful to have been a recipient of E.M.I.L.Y. Bullock said, “We quickly realized the benefits and life-saving ability this will bring to our response area, ultimately aiding in high success for survivability to the people that call for our aid”. Bullock said, “Deployment is quick, it’s effective and practical, and was immediately implemented into our response package”.

The release said the equipment was received by both agencies in May. These cutting-edge tools represent the state’s commitment to enhancing local emergency response capabilities through SPIRE – a grant program designed to bolster disaster preparedness by equipping first responders with essential technology and tools.

SOURCE ONE SERENITY WITH SUMMER TRAIL STEWARDSHIP PROJECTS

KQEN News Radio

This summer Source One Serenity invites veterans, their families, and the wider community to join a series of hands-on trail stewardship projects in the Umpqua National Forest.

A release said the efforts will offer more than just trail maintenance. They will be opportunities to build community, preserve public lands, and reconnect with nature in ways that are both purposeful and healing.

The season will begin with a campout at Illahee Flats with the return of the annual Trail Work and Storytelling gathering. Now in its third year, this event brings people together to care for the Wildrose Trail during the day and gather in the evening for stories shared by a Klamath Modoc Raven storyteller. Camping is available for those who want to stay for the weekend and immerse themselves in both the work and the community.

There will be other projects in July and August. More details and RSVP information can be found at: www.sourceoneserenity.org/sos-trails or via email at: elena@sourceoneserenity.org

This summer’s trail stewardship projects have been made possible thanks to the generosity of individual donors and the support of partners, including the Autzen Foundation, the Three Rivers Foundation and the Umpqua National Forest.
