A big change to weather conditions in the Umpqua Valley is expected on Friday and Saturday.

Forecasters at the National Weather Service in Medford told News Radio 93-9 FM and 1240 KQEN that low pressure coming down from the Gulf of Alaska will lead to much cooler afternoon high temperatures and showers over the 48-hour period. Forecasters said there is a slight chance of thunderstorms in the forecast for Friday. Highs will be in the upper 50s to low 60s. Showers should increase on Saturday bringing a wet start to the first full day of summer.

Sunday near normal high temperatures and sunshine is slated to return. By Monday, high pressure will be coming in with highs in the mid 80’s expected. Tuesday could hit or top 90 degrees.

FIREFIGHTERS COMPLETE 95 PERCENT OF UPPER APPLEGATE FIRE LINE

KQEN News Radio

Resources assigned to the Upper Applegate Fire in Jackson County nearly reached their goal of lining the entire perimeter of the incident by the end of Thursday’s dayshift, completing 95 percent of the fire line.

An update from the Oregon Department of Forestry Southwest Oregon District said the portion that is remaining on the north side of the fire has a high amount of conifer mortality. Public Information Officer Natalie Weber said tree fallers have been removing dead trees, fire-weakened trees, and snags throughout this area, and are continuing this work to allow firefighters to complete the line safely.

Weber said resources are also focused on bolstering the lines created around the fire and beginning mop operations to add depth to the perimeter.

A total of 224 firefighters are assigned to the fire, including eight 20-person crews, 10 engines, six bulldozers and seven water tenders. Aircraft flew throughout the day on Thursday.

CHI MERCY HEALTH SELECTS GENERAL CONTRACTOR FOR EXPANSION PROJECT

The News Review

CHI Mercy Health has selected Howard S. Wright Construction of Portland as the General Contractor for the upcoming Master Facility Project n campus.

This modernization and expansion project is scheduled to start this summer with a targeted completion date of 2028.

A Mercy release said the project will occur within the current footprint of Mercy’s campus and was approved by the parent company CommonSpirit Health for a $34 million investment to Mercy. The medical center’s goal is to better meet the growing needs for inpatient and outpatient care, keep pace with advances in medicine and strengthen the future viability of Douglas County healthcare services.

The release said Mercy’s existing 190,045 square-foot facility is often operating at capacity. As a result, patient convenience and staff efficiency have been challenged. The investment will deliver improved access to medical services and a wider complement of specialty physician services to Douglas County residents. Highlights of the project will include implementing upgrades to Mercy’s operating rooms, expanding the emergency department patient care area, adding another endoscopy lab and addressing other specific facility needs. A few of these renovations involve expanding and modernizing two operating rooms, increasing endoscopy capacity, and expanding the number of fast-track and observation rooms available in the emergency department.

CommonSpirit Health’s Northwest Region President Ketul Patel said, “This investment has been a long-term priority for Mercy and Commonspirit”. Patel said, “We are deeply committed to clinical excellence and providing the highest quality of care for patients and families in Douglas County, and this project helps us deliver on that promise”

The release said as part of the expansion project and investment strategy, Mercy will be recruiting healthcare providers to maintain critical areas of access to care in the community. Through charity care, philanthropic contributions and community outreach and education, Mercy makes a $25 million dollar investment in Douglas County every year.

CHI Mercy Health Market President Russell Wooley said, “We are thrilled to have this project kick off this summer and advance an important step in our mission to improve the health of the people we serve. It is critical to expand our operating rooms and fast-track patients care rooms as our community needs grow. We are so grateful for the support of our wonderful community and CommonSpirit Health”.
