KQEN News Radio

The Umpqua Valley is expecting at or near normal high temperatures through Friday.

Forecasters at the National Weather Service in Medford told News Radio 93-9 FM and 1240 KQEN that weak high pressure will lead to sunny dry conditions with afternoon highs between 80 and the mid-80s. The normal high temperature for Roseburg this week is around 84 degrees.

For the upcoming weekend, high pressure from the Pacific will mean hotter conditions with high temperatures between the mid to upper 80s and the low 90s.

CITY COUNCIL MEETING STARTING EARLY MONDAY

KQEN News Radio

The Roseburg City Council’s Monday meeting will begin early.

Councilors will gather at 6:30 p.m. to interview two applicants for the Planning Commission. Andy Stoner and David Bolhuis have both applied.

When the regular meeting begins at 7:00 p.m. the council will make a selection or decide to consider soliciting for additional applicants. While there are two openings on the commission, both men are realtors, so only one of them can be selected to remain in compliance with the municipal code.

Councilors will have second reading and final adoption of an ordinance regarding indecent exposure.

Department items will include:

  • Awarding the 2025 Pavement Management Slurry Seals contract to Doolittle Construction for $207,000.
  • 2025 Garden Valley Boulevard and Stewart Parkway Pavement and Curb Ramp Improvements project to Guido Construction for just over $1.4 million
  • Harvard Avenue Storm Improvements from West Ballf Street to West Umpqua Street to Black Pearl Paving and Excavation for just over $484,000.
  • Authorizing the city manager to execute an agreement with Axon Al Era for a 44-month contract for just over $275,000.

Mayor Larry Rich will proclaim June as Parks and Recreation Month. Downtown Parking Committee updates will be given.

Other items are on the agenda. The meeting will be held in the council chambers on Southeast Douglas Avenue. It can be seen on the city’s Facebook page or viewed later at www.cityofroseburg.org

LOCAL BOYS & GIRLS CLUB RECEIVES $90,000 GRANT FOR NEW PROGRAM

KQEN News Radio

The Boys & Girls Club of the Umpqua Valley has been awarded a $90,000 Community Health Improvement Plan grant from Umpqua Health Alliance to launch a pilot Youth Workforce Development program for students in 4th through 8th grade students.

A release said the 2YWD initiative will begin in summer 2025 with a new Workforce Wednesdays series designed to introduce students to a wide range of local career opportunities, including in healthcare, manufacturing and natural resources. The program will leverage the club’s existing STEAM and summer camp structure to build career awareness and skill development in a hands-on, engaging environment.

Funding from the grant will support transportation to off-site career exploration experiences, purchase necessary supplies, and help establish a sustainable program model that will extend into the school year.

The program aims to address a critical need in the community: keeping young people engaged in their own future planning at a pivotal stage The release said research has shown that 4th-8th graders are among the most vulnerable to disengagement from long-term educational and career goals. By fostering early exposure to local pathways and providing age-appropriate guidance, the club hopes to increase long-term engagement, school attendance, and workforce readiness.

In its first year, the pilot will serve members split between two grade-level cohorts, with plans to scale the program over time. Expansion efforts will include adding more age groups, extending services to outlying areas, and deepening collaboration with regional organizations such as Roseburg Public Schools, Umpqua Community College, Aviva Health and Adapt.

For more information about the Youth Workforce Development program or other initiatives at the Boys & Girls Club of the Umpqua Valley, go to: www.bgcuv.org or call 440-9505.

EXPERIENCE ROSEBURG MURAL PROJECT WELCOMES NEW MURALS

The News Review

The Experience Roseburg Mural Project has announced the installation of two new murals in downtown Roseburg.

A release said both murals are created by nationally recognized artists whose work celebrates the spirit and natural beauty of the great outdoors.

The first mural, “Notice Beauty” is a collaborative piece by Oregon-based artists Katie Daisy and Karen Eland. Set against the iconic backdrop of Toketee Falls, the mural is a tribute to the Umpqua Valley lush flora and fauna – including western tanagers, foxglove, mushrooms, trillium and more. It is located at the corner of Southeast Washington Avenue and Southeast Jackson Street.

The second mural, “The Watcher”, comes from Denver-based illustrator and designer Brooks Engel, known for his bold, adventurous art under the name, “Nowhere Land” His mural showcases a black bear – “The Watcher” – from which flows a dynamic scene featuring a steelhead trout, western meadowlark, the Umpqua River, Mt. Thielsen and even Roseburg’s Mt. Nebo weather goats. It can be seen near the intersection of Southeast Rose Street and Roseburg Lane Avenue.

Anvil Northwest Senior Designer Nate Wojtach said, “These murals become the sixth and seventh installations of a project we started almost three years ago”. Wojtach said, “The goal of this project has always been to add more public art tot the community, as well as provide an avenue for visitors and locals alike to explore our downtown area”.

The release said the Experience Roseburg Mural Project aims to enhance downtown Roseburg and create a vibrant, walkable gallery that honors the area’s culture landscape and people. Locals and visitors alike are invited to take a walking tour of all seven murals around downtown Roseburg.
