CENTRAL DOUGLAS FIRE AND RESCUE RESPONDS TO HOME FIRE IN GREEN

KQEN News Radio

Crews with Central Douglas Fire & Rescue responded to a fire at a home in Green on Monday.

Division Chief – Fire Marshal Josh Waechter said just after 2:30 p.m. firefighters were dispatched to a reported porch fire at a residence in the 100 block of Pear Tree Lane. Waechter said the home’s occupants attempted to extinguish it with a garden hose. Initial crews on scene found a working attic fire where the porch had extended into the attic vents. Crews entered the home and, after pulling the ceiling to gain access, successfully extinguished the fire in 20 minutes. The fire is still under investigation, but it is most likely to have been caused by a discarded cigarette, according to the CDF&R release.

CDF&R responded to the incident with two pieces of fire equipment and two command units, totaling seven paid and volunteer personnel. CDF&R was assisted by the Roseburg Fire Department and Lookingglass Rural Fire District through automatic aid, with an additional three pieces of fire equipment and two command units, totaling a combined effort from the three organizations of 16 firefighters. Pacific Power also responded to the fire.

The adults, children and numerous pets were displaced and are being assisted by the American Red Cross.

DCSO SAYS RECURRING SCAM IS BACK IN DOUGLAS COUNTY

KQEN News Radio

The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office is once again warning residents about a common scam that has resurfaced in the community.

Undersheriff Brad O’Dell said individuals are receiving fraudulent calls claiming there is some type of law enforcement matter that needs attention. O’Dell said the caller, often using the names of actual staff members, pressures victims to pay through gift cards or cash apps. The caller employs tactics intended to create a sense of necessary immediate action.

O’Dell said this is the same scam that DCSO has warned about a number of times over the past several years. Scammers continue to exploit fear and urgency by using the names of real officials to create a sense of legitimacy. O’Dell said it’s important to remember that legitimate law enforcement will never demand payment for fines via cash apps, gift cards, or any other unconventional methods. Nor will law enforcement call residents advising them that a warrant has been issued for their arrest.

O’Dell said residents are strongly encouraged to be cautious when receiving unsolicited calls demanding immediate payment for any alleged fines, especially those related to jury duty. Anyone who receives such a call should not engage the caller. Simply hang up and report the incident to law enforcement.

For more information or to report a scam attempt, contact the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office at 440-4471.

ODOT CLARIFIES INFORMATION ON NIGHTTIME PAVING IN REEDSPORT

KQEN News Radio

The Oregon Department of Transportation has clarified information on paving work happening this week in the City of Reedsport.

Dan Latham said ODOT is only paving U.S. Highway 101, not any side streets. Latham said highway paving work is going from the Umpqua River Bridge to the Schofield Creek Bridge, a distance of a little more than half a mile. Motorists should expect single-lane closures with brief delays. Watch for workers and equipment that is in the roadway. There may be times that Winchester Avenue and/or Juniper Avenue will be closed, but a detour will be provided.

Latham said work will continue from 7:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m. through Friday morning.  Crews will be grinding asphalt and paving back.

For more information on the project, call the ODOT office in Roseburg at 957-3500.
