FIREFIGHTERS DEAL WITH 30 PLUS ACRE FIRE IN LOOKINGGLASS SATURDAY AFTERNOON
KQEN News Radio

Firefighters from multiple agencies dealt with a fire in the Lookingglass area on Saturday afternoon.
A release from Camas Valley Rural Fire District said just before 3:10 p.m. the agency was paged for an automatic mutual aid request for a natural cover fire on Coos Bay Wagon Road. Callers reported white plumes of smoke and that a grass field was on fire. Camas Valley responded with a tender and two brush trucks, along with 7 personnel.
Upon arrival, Camas Valley firefighters began assisting the Lookingglass Rural Fire District, which was leading the effort. Crews worked to quickly knock down the flame spread.

Due to dry, dead grass and high winds, the fire rapidly spread to approximately 30 plus acres. Several structures were threatened, but thanks to a quick and coordinated response, no structures were lost. Camas Valley firefighters remained on the scene for about 2.5 hours to assist with suppression and mop-up operations.
Additional agencies that responded included the Douglas Forest Protective Association, Tenmile Rural Fire District and Glide Rural Fire Protection District. DFPA and Lookingglass Fire worked on the investigation.
TWO MORE DAYS WITH HIGHS 10-15 DEGREES ABOVE NORMAL
KQEN News Radio

The Umpqua Valley should see two more days with afternoon high temperatures that are 10 to 15 degrees above normal.
Forecasters at the National Weather Service in Medford told News Radio 93-9 FM and 1240 KQEN that Roseburg is expected to reach 96 degrees Monday and 92 degrees on Tuesday. The normal high temperature for this week is 81 degrees. While conditions remain hotter than normal, no record high temperature for the date is expected on Monday. The June 30th record high for Roseburg is 104 degrees, set in 1942.
The Roseburg Regional Airport saw high temperatures of 92 degrees on Sunday and 86 degrees on Saturday.
ROSEBURG SCHOOL BOARD DENIES RENEWAL OF PHOENIX A SECOND TIME
KQEN News Radio

Last Wednesday, the Roseburg School Board voted unanimously to deny the Phoenix Charter School of Roseburg’s revised request for renewal of their sponsorship contract.
The vote followed a brief public hearing on the question. In May, the board said no to the renewal, citing concerns over noncompliance with contractual obligations, and state and federal laws. The contract expires on Monday. Without a sponsoring district, Phoenix will not receive state pass through per-student funding effective Tuesday.
Last month, a Roseburg Public Schools release said the district and its board do not have jurisdiction over whether the school remains open, whether the school continues operations under sponsorship of another district, or whether the school continues to function as a private organization.
DELEGATION MEMBERS ANNOUNCE $31 MILLION IN PILT TO COUNTIES
KQEN News Radio
Three members of the Oregon Congressional Delegation have announced that counties throughout Oregon will receive a combined total of just over $31 million in Payments in Lieu of Taxes funding for 2025.
A release from Senators Jeff Merkley and Ron Wyden said because local governments cannot tax federal lands, annual PILT funding helps to defray the costs associated with maintaining important community services in counties with federal lands.
Merkley said, “Rural communities shouldn’t have to wonder if they will have the resources they need to pay for essential services and infrastructure”. Merkley serves as Ranking Member of the Interior-Environment Appropriations Subcommittee which funds PILT. Wyden said, “Oregonians count on these federal investments to provide key support for road and bridge maintenance, public safety including firefighters and law enforcement, and more throughout our state”.
PILT compensates counties for tax-exempt federal lands administered by several federal agencies. Payments are calculated based on the number of acres of federal land within each county or jurisdiction and the population of that county or jurisdiction.
Congressman Cliff Bentz said, “Since PILT payments began in 1977, the U.S. Government, through the Department of the Interior, has distributed more than $12.6 billion dollars”. Douglas County will receive $829,456 in PILT payments. Nationwide, the Department of the Interior has awarded nearly $645 million through the PILT program to more than 1,900 state and local governments.

KQEN News Radio
