SENATE UNANIMOUSLY PASSES BILL TO STOP ILLEGAL CANNABIS GROWS

KQEN News Radio

On Tuesday, the Oregon State Senate unanimously passed legislation that advocates say will help stop illegal cannabis grows.

A release from State Senator David Brock Smith said he, working in partnership with the Oregon Farm Bureau, Douglas County Commissioner Chris Boice, and local landowners, successfully moved Senate Bill 347 A through the Senate.

Brock Smith said, “Illegal cannabis grows in southwest Oregon and across the state are out of control”. Brock Smith said, “SB 347 A is one tool to hold landowners accountable for allowing these illegal activities on their property”.

The legislation disqualifies land from farm use special assessment if the landowner or person in possession and control of the land receives a final civil penalty or criminal conviction for the illegal cultivation of marijuana.

State Senator Noah Robinson of Josephine County said, “Illegal marijuana is devastating to Oregonians and our communities”. Robinson said, “In Southern Oregon, its production often involves water theft, human trafficking, and other serious crimes. SB 347 will help us address these problems”.

Brock Smith said he appreciated his colleagues’ unanimous support for the legislation. Brock Smith said, “This sends a clear message that illegal cannabis operations and their associated harms will not be tolerated any longer”.

SB 347 A now moves to the House of Representatives for consideration.

CON-VEY ANNOUNCES JEREMY GOEBEL AS NEXT PRESIDENT

KQEN News Radio

Con-Vey has announced the appointment of Jeremy Goebel as its next president effective June 1st.

A Con-Vey release said the board of directors voted unanimously to promote Goebel during a meeting held May 15th. He becomes the fourth president in the company’s 79-year history. Goebel will succeed Dave Larecy, who will remain actively involved as CEO of Con-Vey Holding Inc.

Goebel’s promotion marks a significant transition for Con-Vey, as he assumes responsibility for the daily, weekly, monthly and annual operations of the company. Over the last decade, Goebel has steadily taken on increasing responsibility and played a key role in Con-Vey’s growth and evolution, according to the release.

CEO Dave Larecy said, “Jeremy has earned the trust of our customers, our team, and leadership through consistent performance, smart decisions, and a deep understanding of our business”. Larecy said, “He’s been instrumental in building our sales team, expanding our equipment lifecycle service offerings, and driving integrated solutions that have opened up new revenue streams. I have every confidence that he’ll continue to lead Con-Vey with integrity, insight, and care.”

Goebel began his career at Con-Vey in 2013 in sales. He was promoted to sales manager in 2017 and became vice president in January 2023. Goebel oversaw departments including Sales, Mechanical and Electrical Engineering, and Equipment Lifecycle. In his new role as president, he will also assume responsibility for Manufacturing, Purchasing, and Planning. The release said his leadership in developing subcontractor-integrated packages and partnership with long-term customers has helped fuel substantial revenue growth and enabled reinvestment into company infrastructure and capabilities.

Larecy will continue in his role as CEO of Con-Vey Holding, providing strategic oversight across all Con-Vey Holding businesses, including 7robotics, and continuing to lead shared service departments such as Accounting, Finance, Marketing and IT.

OUTDOOR TENNIS/PICKLEBALL COURTS CLOSED FOR RENOVATION

KQEN News Radio

Roseburg’s outdoor tennis and pickleball courts are closed for a complete overhaul that is much anticipated by the community.

A city release said the $2.5 million renovation will deliver eight new tennis courts, ten dedicated pickleball courts and new fencing, lighting, seating, entryway and security system to Stewart Park by this fall and will result in increased tournament play for the region.

The project is being made possible thanks to a $750,000 state grant won by Roseburg Parks and Recreation Program Manager Val Ligon, $523,000 in city funds, and $1.1 million in matching community funds raised by the nonprofit Umpqua Valley Tennis Center.

The tennis courts are more than half a century old yet remain popular with players of all ages and serve as the Roseburg High School tennis team’s home courts.

Public Works Director Ryan Herinckx said, “It’s really been a long-needed project for the youth, as well as the adults”. Herinckx said, “This project wouldn’t have happened without the tennis center’s fundraising efforts”.

The existing courts closed on May 20th, after the end of Roseburg High School’s tennis season.

The release said the grant is one of the biggest ever won by Roseburg Parks and Recreation. The money from the Oregon Parks and Recreation Department’s Local Government Grant Program, which is funded by the Oregon State Lottery, will be used to replace the courts that are owned by the city, but operated and maintained by the tennis center.

The project will revamp low-cost courts where adults pay just $2 a day for unlimited play and anyone age 18 and under always plays for free. Prices will remain the same.

The refurnished facility will include all-weather courts covered with a more permeable, premium Plexpave surface, energy efficient LED lighting for night games and tournaments, new nets and posts, a hitting wall, black vinyl perimeter fencing and improved seating. A drinking foundation will be added.

Roseburg engineering firm i.e.Engineering, designed the project and is assisting with construction management. The contractor is JRT Construction of Oakland. Remaining demolition is expected to begin next Monday, June 9th, followed by construction. Completion is currently expected to be near the beginning of October.

Tennis and pickleball tournaments are already scheduled for next spring.
