WINTER STORM WATCH FOR MOUNTAIN AREAS STARTS WEDNESDAY AFTERNOON
KQEN News Radio

A Winter Storm Watch remains in effect from Wednesday afternoon through Friday evening for mountain areas in parts of southern Oregon.
Forecasters at the National Weather Service said heavy snow is possible. Total snow accumulations between 7 and 20 inches are forecast. This will come in as two systems with the potential for a break between them on Thursday evening.
The Watch area is for elevations of 4,500 feet and above in the southern Oregon Cascades and Siskiyou Mountains. Forecasters said travel could be very difficult during the winter event.
DOUGLAS COUNTY GOVERNMENT DECLARES STATE OF EMERGENCY
KQEN News Radio

The Douglas County Commissioners declared a State of Emergency on Sunday for the entire county, due to the “extreme conditions related to the severe winter storm that impacted our county causing extreme peril to the safety or person and/or the protection of property”.
A county release said the declaration empowers authorities to take extraordinary measures to protect lives, property, and public health, including accessing emergency funds, and coordinating resources for rapid response and recovery. A copy of the declaration is linked at: Declaration-of-Emergency—Signed—March-16th-2025-Event
Although floodwater has receded in some parts of the county, many areas are still experiencing the impact of flooding, including high water, road closures, detours, mudslides, debris, downed trees, falling rocks and damaged roadways. Some areas may continue to experience elevated water levels for an undetermined period of time and there is an increased risk of mudslides and falling rocks in areas with steep terrain.
While several local temporary shelters have closed, the American Red Cross is operating a shelter on an on-call basis at the Drain Church of Christ. Those with shelter needs, can call the Red Cross – Southwest Oregon Chapter at 541-344-5244.
Those with questions about insurance, flood damage, resources, or housing can call the 211-information line for assistance. For more information about the service, go to: 211info – Connect. Inform. Empower.
FIRE DEPARTMENT RESCUES 23 CITIZENS, 10 DOGS AND 2 CATS
KQEN News Radio

Sunday, Roseburg faced a challenging weather event as rising water and widespread flooding caused many road closures throughout the area and left numerous citizens trapped in their own homes.
A Roseburg Fire Department post on social media said in response, firefighters mobilized to rescue 23 citizens who were trapped by the floodwaters, along with 10 dogs and 2 cats.
RFD thanked the city’s Public Works Department team for their assistance throughout the entire weather event.
RFD also expressed gratitude to Central Douglas Fire & Rescue for their invaluable help, supplying both personnel from their Swift Water Rescue team and the necessary boats to reach those stranded by rising waters.
The post said in addition, the Roseburg Police Department provided critical support throughout the city, ensuring the safety of both residents and responders.
RFD said the teamwork and coordination of all involved helped save lives and mitigate the impact of the intense weather event.
BEDDING BEING COLLECTED FOR OXFORD HOUSE
KQEN News Radio

Two H.O.P.E. Drug Court graduate phase participants are collecting needed bedding and pillows for local Oxford Houses in Douglas County.
The Douglas County H.O.P.E. Drug Court program is preparing for its 109th graduation on May 13th in the Cascade Conference Hall at the fairgrounds. Graduate hopefuls Catherine Silva and Kristy Parham are seeking assistance with collecting new or gently used bedding for twin and full sizes, and new unused pillows for Oxford House.
A Douglas County Circuit Court release said the first Oxford House was opened in Silver Spring, Maryland in 1975. Since then, Oxford House has expanded to over 3,400 houses and more than 20,000 beds in 44 states and 5 countries. Year after year the number of Oxford Houses has continued to increase. More than 580,000 individuals recovering from alcoholism, drug addiction, and co-occurring mental illness have found that Oxford House living has contributed to their long-term recovery. Each Oxford House is autonomous and holds a weekly democratic house meeting to assure the smooth operation and financial viability of the house.
Many people starting out in an Oxford House locally might have nothing or not much, and bedding is the first necessity needed for a fresh start. Silva and Parham both lived in an Oxford House during the beginning of their program and know the importance of having bedding. Both have transitioned to different housing but want to help others to provide hope, comfort and make a positive impact for the overall well-being of others starting out in recovery.
Donation boxes to drop off items are located at Bobalou’s Billiards and at Painted Horse Recovery, both on Northeast Stephens Street. Both locations will accept donations until April 22nd.

UACT WITH LITTLE WOMEN THE MUSICAL OPENING SOON

In the KQEN Cultural Spotlight, Umpqua Actors Community Theatre will present Little Women the Musical opening on April 3rd.

Begrudgingly taking this advice, Jo weaves the story of herself and her sisters and their experience growing up in Civil War America.
The performances are on Thursday through Saturday nights at 7:00 p.m. and Sunday afternoons at 2:00 p.m. at the UACT building on West Harvard Avenue. Tickets are $17 for adults and $12 for children ages 12 and under.

SENATORS AND COLLEAGUES INTRODUCE LEGISLATION TO REVERSE VA CUTS
KQEN News Radio

On Monday, Senators Ron Wyden and Jeff Merkley said they have joined Senate colleagues in introducing comprehensive legislation they believe would protect veterans, military spouses and VA employees in Oregon and nationwide from cuts at the Veteran’s Administration and across the federal government.
A joint release claimed those cuts were indiscriminately targeted by the Department of Government Efficiency.
Wyden said, “Veterans and the benefits they earned with their service to our country are under indiscriminate and unjust attack by Trump, Musk and their flunkies at DOGE”. Wyden said, “The Putting Veteran’s First Act would ensure these unduly fired employees are returned to work and ensure that service for veterans is not interrupted for one day longer”.
Merkley said, “There is no making sense in the Trump Administration’s cruel, reckless plans to fire over 80,000 VA employees, many of them veterans themselves. Our veterans and military families deserve the full measure of appreciation, not this stunning betrayal by President Trump”. Merkley said, “All my colleagues should support this bill to reinstate and protect these heroes from Trump and Republican’s illegal and reckless cuts”.
The legislation was led by Democratic Senator Richard Blumenthal of Connecticut
