WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY FROM WEDNESDAY EVENING THROUGH THURSDAY EVENING

KQEN News Radio

A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect from 5:00 p.m. Wednesday through 5:00 p.m. Thursday for mountain areas in parts of southern Oregon.

Forecasters at the National Weather Service said snow is expected. Total snow accumulations between 5 and 16 inches with the highest totals in the central Cascades and lower totals in the Siskiyou Mountains. Winds will gust as high as 40 miles per hour over high and exposed terrain.

The Advisory area includes elevations above 5,000 feet in the south central and southern Oregon Cascades and Siskiyou Mountains. It applies to Howard Prairie, Lake of the Woods, the Mt. Ashland Ski Area, Crescent Lake, the Siskiyou Summit, Crater Lake and Diamond Lake as well as highways 140, 62, 138 and 230.

Forecasters said travel could be difficult during the winter event. This is the first of two systems. The second system on Friday will also produce impactful weather for the higher terrain.

Drivers should slow down and use caution while traveling. Call 511 or visit www.tripcheck.com for road information.

DOUGLAS COUNTY FLOODING EVENT UPDATE

KQEN News Radio

Douglas County government is still at an all-hands-on-deck response to the severe winter storm that hit the county on Sunday.

A county release said their team in collaboration with local cities, tribal government, regional agencies and private contractors continues to monitor, triage, and respond to ongoing issues related to the flood event. Crews continue to be deployed to new slides, downed trees, and debris cleanup efforts all over the county.

Douglas County Public Works and private local contractors have worked continuously to get all county-maintained roads operational and open with at least one-lane of travel access. One slide, at the 2700 block of Hubbard Creek Road in Umpqua completely washed out about 35 feet and both lanes of the road on Sunday afternoon. Public Works were alerted to the incident at 3:00 p.m. Sunday and were able to mobilize county crews and local contractors who worked non-stop through the night and were able to open one lane to traffic early Monday morning.

The release said one of the biggest stories during this weather event was Galesville Dam. It acted as a flood control device saving several communities from even greater flooding and additional carnage. During the height of the floodwaters the dam reached near maximum capacity, but the Public Works – Natural Resources Division staff employed a strategic approach to the measured storage and release of water from the dam into Cow Creek. This approach avoided an uncontrolled, catastrophic spillover of the dam, while keeping the release of water at the highest level possible without contributing to additional flooding downstream.

Motorists are asked to be patient and expect delays or detours due to heavy equipment, work crews, and flaggers that are in the impacted areas.

KQEN News Radio

Highway 138E is now open 12 miles east of Glide.

Information from the Oregon Department of Transportation said a pilot car is escorting motorists between milepost 29 and milepost 33 where land slides have occurred.

BURN PERMITS TO BE ISSUED STARTING APRIL 15TH

KQEN News Radio

The City of Roseburg will begin issuing residential burn permits on April 15th.

A city release said the permits are issued for 7 days at a cost of $75. Residential yard waste is the only material that may be burned. Prohibited items include standing berry vines, paper, wood, plastics, tires, standing grass, weeds, construction material, and material from lot clearing.

Burning may not be done on vacant lots or on someone else’s property. Fires must be monitored by a competent adult and extinguished prior to darkness. Tools to control or extinguish the fire must be on-site whenever there is material burning.

Burn barrels are never allowed inside the city limits. Anyone burning trash or burning without a permit may be subject to a fine and/or legal action. Additionally, due diligence must be exercised while burning, even with a permit, as fires can quickly get out of control. The person responsible for the fire may be subject to fines, legal action, or restitution.

The release said, if possible, residents are urged to utilize alternatives to burning, such as composting, chipping, mulching, or transporting the debris to the Douglas County Landfill.

To request a burn permit in the City of Roseburg, call 492-6770 between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. on weekdays. This information, as well as a burn permit requests form is also available at the city website: Burn Permits | City of Roseburg

CAMAS VALLEY RURAL FIRE DISTRICT RECEIVES WEYERHAEUSER GRANT

KQEN News Radio

Camas Valley Rural Fire District recently received a $6,200 grant from Weyerhaeuser.

A company release said the funding will allow the volunteer fire department to replace its aging, heavy gas-powered ventilation fan with a modern battery-powered unit, improving firefighter safety and efficiency.

The grant is part of the company’s commitment to support its operating communities and enhance local wildfire response in Oregon. This upgrade will lower the number of staff needed to move the fan as well as reduce injury risks, as the current fan requires two firefighters to lift into place.

The grant was awarded at the fire station in Camas Valley on March 6th. It is from Weyerhaeuser’s 2024 grant cycle. Submissions for 2025 are now open until September 30th. Oregon nonprofit organizations are encouraged to apply online: Giving Fund | Weyerhaeuser
