ROSEBURG ENJOYS SUNSHINE SUNDAY BUT NOT A RECORD HIGH FOR THE DATE

KQEN News Radio

Roseburg enjoyed a sunny Sunday afternoon but didn’t set a record high for the date.

Forecasters at the National Weather Service in Medford told News Radio 93-9 FM and 1240 KQEN that the mercury reached 69 degrees at the Roseburg Regional Airport. The record high for March 23rd was 76 degrees, set in 1940.

Forecasters said the region will see two more days of sunny conditions with highs in the mid 70’s on Monday and pushing to near 80 degrees on Tuesday. About a week and a half of cooler and rainy conditions will follow starting on Wednesday.

BEACH HAZARDS STATEMENT FOR MONDAY AFTERNOON THROUGH TUESDAY MORNING

KQEN News Radio

The National Weather Service has issued a Beach Hazards Statement which is in effect from Monday afternoon through Tuesday morning for beaches in Douglas, Coos and Curry counties.

Forecasters said sneaker waves can run up significantly farther on beaches than normal, including over rocks and jetties. These waves can suddenly knock people off of their feet and quickly pull them into the cold ocean waters, resulting in serious injury or death. Waves may also lift driftwood logs, trapping anyone caught underneath.

The risk will be highest on west facing beaches, especially early Tuesday morning.

Forecasters said beach goers should avoid climbing on rocks and jetties. Stay away from the ocean and remain out of the water to avoid hazardous conditions.

ROSEBURG CITY COUNCIL TO CONSIDER EMERGENCY DECLARATION

KQEN News Radio

The Roseburg City Council will consider a resolution declaring an emergency due to the recent severe weather event and related flooding at its meeting Monday night.

Notes to councilors said the rain event of March 16th caused significant damage in a number of areas. The Public Works Department continues to evaluate and prioritize necessary repairs. So far, the department has identified nearly $2.3 million in damage to storm drainage and roadway systems inside the city. This does not include the cost of the initial response effort. At this point, staff said it is not clear if any state or federal funding will become available. Both the Douglas County Commissioners and Governor Tina Kotek have declared emergencies.

The council will vote on authorizing the city manager to execute an amendment for FAA Grant #031 in an amount of up to fifteen percent. This is for a taxiway extension project that is set to begin next month at the Roseburg Regional Airport.

Councilors will vote on authorizing a task order with Consor North America for design and bidding services for phase 4 of the 24-inch transmission main from Newton Creek Drive to Emerald Drive at a cost not to exceed just under $345,000.

A number of other items are on the agenda as well. The meeting will begin at 7:00 p.m. in the council chambers on Southeast Douglas Avenue. The meeting can be viewed on the city’s Facebook page or seen later at www.cityofroseburg.org

HOPE FOR SAFE HAVEN MATERNITY HOME PROJECT

KQEN News Radio

The Douglas County H.O.P.E Drug Court program is preparing for their 109th graduation on May 13 at 5:15 p.m. at the fairgrounds.

Graduate hopeful Nichole DeSpain is seeking assistance for her project to obtain feminine products and financial donations for the Safe Haven Maternity Home.

A Douglas County Circuit Court release said Safe Haven Maternity Home is dedicated to transforming the lives of mothers and their children by offering a safe, stable environment and a pathway towards independence. Safe Haven believes in breaking cycles of trauma by offering more than just shelter. By addressing the root causes of crisis situations and equipping women with skills for long-term stability. Safe Haven seeks to change lives, one mother and child at a time.

Safe Haven Executive Director Evie Kumar said, “Safe Haven strongly believes in the work of HOPE Drug Court. We have seen lives transformed through individuals being given a second chance”.

A donation box for items is located at Adapt Integrated Health Care in the lobby of the second floor. DeSpain chose Safe Haven because she was a victim of domestic violence and recognizes the importance of this program to help expecting mothers feel safe and thrive under their care. DeSpain said, “I think women supporting women is one of the most powerful things we can do as women in recovery”.
