SENATE REPUBLICANS SAY RESTRICTIONS WON’T REDUCE GUN DEATHS

KQEN News Radio

Senate Republicans are pushing back against the proposed amendment to Senate Bill 243, arguing that it does nothing to address the real drivers of gun deaths while attacking the constitutionality protected rights of responsible gun owners.

A release from Oregon Senate Republicans said between 2019 and 2023, Oregon recorded 3,125 firearm-related deaths, 77 percent of which were suicides. At the same time, Oregon ranks among the worst states for mental health treatment access despite having one of the highest rates of mental illness. Republicans claim rather than tackling these core issues, SB243 imposes more restrictions that will do little to stop crime or reduce suicides.

The release said the amendment to SB243 will:

  • Strip 18-to-20-year-olds of their constitutional right to buy firearms, relegating them to a short list of outdated long guns while banning handguns entirely
  • Impose a punitive three-day waiting period on firearm purchases, stalling law-abiding citizens desperate for protection – especially victims of stalking
  • Ban unloaded firearms from vast swathes of public buildings and vague “adjacent grounds”

State Senator David Brock Smith said, “This is yet another example of urban legislators forcing restrictions on law-abiding gun owners in rural Oregon while ignoring the real problems behind gun deaths”. Brock Smith said, “Oregon’s mental health crisis is being ignored in favor of ineffective gun control policies that won’t stop criminals or reduce suicides. Brock Smith represents Senate District One, which includes the south coast and parts of Douglas County.

MARCH IS PROBLEM GAMBLING AWARENESS MONTH

KQEN News Radio

March is Problem Gambling Awareness Month.

A release from Adapt Integrated Health Care said it’s a time dedicated to educating individuals and communities about the risks associated with gambling and promoting resources for prevention and support.

Prevention Program Manager Sidnee Hedrick said, “Problem gambling is a preventable issue, and awareness is the first step in safeguarding our communities”. Hedrick said, “By educating individuals on the risks and providing the tools for healthy decision-making, we can reduce the likelihood of gambling-related harm. It’s important to approach gambling with caution, set limits, and never gamble with money you can’t afford to lose”.

Hedrick said that recognizing the warning signs early and seeking support when needed is key to prevent gambling use disorder and ensuring that gambling remains an enjoyable and safe activity for those who choose to engage in it.

The release said problem gambling can affect anyone, regardless of age or background, and if often goes unnoticed until it leads to serious financial, emotional, or mental health consequences. Common warning signs include chasing losses, gambling beyond one’s means, lying about gambling habits, and experiencing distress when unable to gamble.

VET CAFE HAPPENING SATURDAY AT ROSEBURG PUBLIC LIBRARY

KQEN News Radio

The Roseburg Vet Café Coalition will offer a Vet Café on Saturday at 11:00 a.m.

It will be presented in the Ford Conference Room at the Roseburg Public Library.

The new initiative is designed to provide a safe and welcoming space for veterans to come together, build camaraderie, and strengthen connections within the community.

Vet Cafés are emerging around the country as the need for an in-person connection is recognized in a world that has become increasingly digital, especially post-COVID. These gatherings offer a unique opportunity for veterans to engage in meaningful discussions, share experiences, and establish valuable connections – without the formal setting of a resource fair.

Roseburg VA Community Engagement & Partnership Coordinator William Wagner said, “This community-based coalition formed to help reduce the risks that isolation, loneliness, and detachment can often pose to mental health and overall wellness”. Wagner said the event is designed to build momentum and empower those looking to strengthen the veteran-community connection.

All veterans, families and community members interested in supporting local veterans are encouraged to attend. No RSVP is required.

DOUGLAS COUNTY MUSEUM WITH HISTORIC FIREARMS AND ANTIQUE QUILTS EXHIBIT

KQEN News Radio

Douglas County Commissioners along with the staff at the Douglas County Museum of History and Natural History have announced the opening of its newest limited-time exhibit in the Museum’s auditorium: Historic Firearms & Antique Quilts.

A county release said the Historic Firearms Exhibit features an impressive array of weapons from the museum’s extensive collection, offering a unique perspective on the cultural, technological, and historical significance of firearms throughout history. Some of the notable pieces in this display include:

  • .75 Caliber Brown Bess British Muzzle Loader, circa 1797. A firearm widely used by British troops during the late 18th and early 19th centuries
  • Military Flintock .69 Caliber Pistol, circa 1820s representing an era when Flinttock technology was the standard for military firearms
  • Springfield Sporter 1903 .30 caliber rifle, featuring a hand-carved walnut stock crafted in Hong Kong. This rifle is particularly unique as it bears the Applegate name and the Applegate Coat of Arms, a tribute to one of Douglas County’s most well-known pioneer families.

Many of the firearms on display were generously donated to the museum by Edna Rauch, wife of Ray Rauch, a lifelong firearms enthusiast and collector.

Visitors can also enjoy the Antique Quilt Exhibit. It includes:

  • Hand-stitched family quilts dating back to the mid-1800s, some of which made the journey along the Oregon Trail
  • Four stunning Crazy Quilts from the 1890s to early 1900s, showcasing intricate patterns and embroidery
  • Unique sewing machine from the 1850s, manufactured by the Wheeler & Wilson Manufacturing Company, one of the earliest pioneers in sewing machine production

Located adjacent to the Douglas County Fairgrounds, the museum is open seven days a week from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. For more information about the museum, go to: https://umpquavalleymuseums.org/

Two Teens Critically Injured in Crash Near Sutherlin

SUTHERLIN, Ore. – A two-vehicle collision east of Sutherlin on Wednesday evening has left two teenagers critically injured.

The crash occurred around 6:40 p.m. on March 26, 2025, at the intersection of Nonpareil Road and Northside Road. Emergency dispatchers received multiple reports of the accident, prompting a response from Douglas County Sheriff's deputies, Sutherlin Police, and local fire and EMS personnel.

According to the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office, a 2009 silver Acura MDX, driven by a 17-year-old female from Oakland, was traveling southbound on Northside Road. The teen driver stopped at the intersection but then pulled into the path of an eastbound 2001 Ford F-250 pickup, which was towing an excavator on a flatbed trailer.

The driver of the Ford F-250, 32-year-old Patrick Foley of Sutherlin, attempted to stop but was unable to avoid the collision. Foley sustained minor injuries and was fully cooperative with investigators at the scene.

The teen driver and her 17-year-old female passenger from Sutherlin both sustained serious injuries. They were initially transported to Mercy Medical Center before being transferred to Portland-area hospitals for further treatment.

The Douglas County Sheriff's Office was assisted by the Sutherlin Police Department, Fair Oaks Fire Department, Sutherlin Fire Department, and Umpqua Valley Ambulance.

The investigation into the crash is ongoing.
