PUBLIC WORKS PLANS TO REMOVE MATERIAL FROM SLIDE
KQEN News Radio

The Douglas County Public Works Department is following up on Sunday night’s minor rockslide northwest of Roseburg.
County Lead Public Information Officer Tamara Howell said that slide was in the 11000 block of Garden Valley Road. It reportedly took place at approximately 8:50 p.m. Howell said both lanes are open in the area with no injuries to motorists that were impacted by the event.
Public Works staff said the slide did not cause any visible or measurable damage to the road surface itself. Traffic safety cones have been temporarily placed along the road. Howell said the department plans to get crews in to remove the slide material this week.
MERKLEY TO HOLD VIRTUAL FORUM AFTER PRESIDENT’S JOINT ADDRESS TO CONGRESS
KQEN News Radio

Oregon’s U.S Senator Jeff Merkley will hold a live forum for all Oregonians, live on Facebook and YouTube, after President Donald Trump’s joint address to Congress Tuesday night.
A release said Merkley is attending the address to send a clear message to President Trump that he fiercely opposes what the senator calls, “the disastrous actions endangering funding for critical programs around the state, harming our economy and workers, and threatening Oregon values”.
Merkley said, “Trump and his sidekick Elon Musk are waging a full-on administrative authoritarian takeover of our country. Trump thinks this week’s joint address to Congress is a pulpit to spout destruction and hate towards Americans”. Merkley said, “I won’t accept it as normal, and I won’t let Trump skate by with opposition”. Merkley said, “Join me after the address to discuss how we move forward together to reinstate government of, by and for the people!”.
The virtual event is open to all Oregonians following the President’s address. While the exact start time depends on the length of the speech, Merkley’s event is expected begin around 7:45 p.m. The virtual forum can be watched live on Senator Merkley’s Facebook and YouTube pages: Senator Jeff Merkley | Facebook, https://www.youtube.com/@SenatorJeffMerkleyYT/streams

A district release said all families living within the district boundaries are encouraged to apply now for their child to be considered for placement in the program. To be eligible, children must turn 4 years old on or before September 1st, 2025.
The district will use an enrollment process for the upcoming school year:
- First come, first served: Students who meet the eligibility criteria and apply before May 1st will be placed on the roster in the order applications are received.
- After May 1st: Remaining sports will be filled through a lottery system, which will include all eligible students who apply after the May 1st priority deadline.
- Accepted families will receive a phone call on or before June 1st
- Waitlisted families will receive an email on or before June 1st
Those interested in applying are welcome to attend “A Peek into Pre-K” on April 12th from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. At this optional event, potential applicants can visit any of the district’s three Pe-K sites and learn more about the program.
Pre-K is offered through the district at Winchester and Green elementary schools and at Eastwood Elementary in partnership with the Douglas Education Service District. The program offers morning or afternoon sessions four days per week with no school on Wednesdays. There is no cost to attend.
The release said Roseburg Pre-K provides a high-quality early learning program that aligns with both the Oregon Early Learning Guidelines and the school district’s K-12 system to ensure positive outcomes and a smooth kindergarten transition.

UMPQUA WATERSHEDS RECEIVES AWARD FROM COW CREEK FOUNDATION
KQEN News Radio

Umpqua Watersheds has announced that the non-profit organization has received a grant award from the Cow Creek Umpqua Indian Foundation in support of this year’s Eastwood Nature Days.
A Watersheds release said the funds will provide a unique, week-long experience for area third graders to celebrate nature, environmental education, and the Umpqua Watershed.
The yearly experience was in danger of disappearing last year, with the retirement of key teachers and local supporters who volunteered their time to coordinate the traditional event.
Amidst uncertainty surrounding the event’s future, Umpqua Watersheds embraced the opportunity to organize the experience, ensuring its continuation. With the support and participation of the Umpqua Valley Natural Leadership Science Hub, Umpqua Valley Steam Hub, the Cow Creek Band of Umpqua Tribe of Indians, Umpqua Valley Audubon and “Talk about Trees”, the week brings together a community team to provide an immersive experience that organizers say is designed to foster a deeper understanding and appreciation of the natural world, and a life-long love of nature.
The release said the key to this experience is getting the kids outside of the classroom and into the field where they can truly immerse themselves in the sights, sounds, smells and texture of nature.
The theme for this year’s Eastwood Nature Days is “Nature’s Superheroes”, with the beaver taking center stage as the mascot.
Students will enjoy hands on activities exploring the Secrets of Ecosystems, Native American Storytelling, Biochar, Prescribed Burning, Umpqua Early Days, Birding and more.

PROVIDING H.O.P.E PROJECT SEEKING DREAM CENTER DONATIONS
KQEN News Radio

A H.O.P.E. Drug Court graduate-phase participant is seeking to collect clothing, nonperishable food and toiletries that are needed by the Roseburg Dream Center.
The Douglas County H.O.P.E. Drug Court program is preparing for their 109th graduation on May 13th at 5:15 p.m. in the Cascade Hall at the Douglas County Fairgrounds.
Graduate hopeful Zachary Thor Schwab is seeking assistance for his project to help the Roseburg Dream Center.
The Roseburg Dream Center started in the south end of Roseburg and later moved to the current location on Northeast Diamond Lake Boulevard. Today they offer free clothing, have a food pantry and are working to expand services in order to bring solutions to the growing needs of the community.
Schwab has previously used their services and decided to have his community project benefit the organization. Besides clothing, food and toiletry items, he is seeking sponsors and assistance to provide a meal on April 21st during a Connecting Point service day for those attending to seek help. Connecting Point is a mobile navigation program consisting of local agency members who travel to various locations to meet people to assist with identification, jobs, housing, Naloxone, testing kits, hygiene and more.
Donation boxes to drop off items are located at:
- The Douglas County Courthouse in the Juvenile Department lobby on the first floor
- Adapt Integrated Health Care on the second-floor lobby at 621 West Madrone Street.
