Roseburg Area Morning News

ROSEBURG COULD SEE HOTTEST DAY OF 2025 SO FAR ON THURSDAY

KQEN News Radio

Roseburg could see the hottest day of the year so far on Thursday.

Forecasters at the National Weather Service in Medford told News Radio 93-9 FM and 1240 KQEN that the mercury is expected to reach 85 degrees at the Roseburg Regional Airport. That would slightly eclipse the previous afternoon high this year, which was 84 degrees on April 14th.

The record high for May 1st is 93 degrees, set in 1947.

The hot weather is expected to be brief, however. Forecasters said Friday will see increasing clouds and a high in the low to mid 70s. Showers are forecast to begin Friday night and stick around through most of Saturday. Sunday the sunshine is back, but high temperatures will only be in the mid-60s.

The National Weather Service said pleasant weather and dry conditions are forecast for next week. Highs should be between the mid 70’s and the low to mid 80’s for several days.

WATER MAIN BREAK IMPACTING SECTION OF GLENDALE

KQEN News Radio

A message from the City of Glendale said there has been a water main break on Azalea Glen Road on the way to the high school.

Those in the area have an interruption in service. When the water is back on, it will need to be boiled before using. City staff will notify residents when water quality tests come back.

Glendale School District Superintendent Bridget McMillen said the high school and middle school do not have drinkable water. McMillen said parents should send their child to school with a full bottle of water on Thursday.

RIVERBEND LIVE! CONCERT SERIES RETURNS FOR 29TH SEASON

KQEN News Radio

The Riverbend Live! summer concert series is returning for its 29th season of free outdoor performances in Winston, celebrating another summer of music, theater, and community.

This year’s lineup includes five Friday night performances spanning Blues, Americana, Cowboy Poetry and Western Music, Electro Swing, plus a full-scale youth theater production – all on stage at Riverbend Park.

The Riverbend Live! lineup will feature:

  • July 4th: Southern Avenue. The Blues Music Award-winning, Grammy nominated Memphis based family band, plays original Memphis blues, modern soul and gospel-infused roots music.
  • July 11th: Eilen Jewell. An Idaho native, Jewell built her career the old-fashioned way, touring relentlessly. Over the course of nine albums, she has crisscrossed the globe countless times, appearing with artists as diverse as Lucinda Williams, Mavis Staples, George Jones and Emmylou Harris.
  • July 18th: Cowboy Poetry and Western Music: Andy Nelson is an energetic and high-spirited cowboy poet and humorist offering the history, heritage and hilarity of the cowboy culture through traditional poetry and storytelling. Brenn Hill is a singer/songwriter with a career spanning twelve recordings of mostly self-penned music and over two decades on the road.
  • July 25th and 26th. Seussical the Musical is a contemporary re-imaging of Dr. Seuss which weaves together many of his most famous stories and characters in unexpected ways. A cast of young people will be directed by Bart McHenry, assistant theater professor at Umpqua Community College.
  • August 1st: Good Co. The 1920s will collide with the 2020s when the Seattle group takes the stage, bringing Electro Swing to life with infectious energy and vintage flair. This six-piece ensemble channels the spirit of Cab Calloway and the soundscape of Daft Punk into a danceable, genre-bending spectacle that’s equal parts retro and future.

Performances begin at 7:00 p.m. and run approximately two hours. Attendees are encouraged to bring blankets or lawn chairs. Outside food and picnic baskets are welcome. Food vendors will be available at all concerts. Lookingglass Brewery will offer beverages at concerts but not during the youth theater performances. Pets and smoking are not allowed in the venue.

LOCAL CASA DIRECTOR CONCERNED ABOUT CUTS IN FUNDING

KQEN News Radio

Court Appointed Special Advocates of Douglas County Executive Director Angela Gross says she has a growing concern regarding the impact funding cuts will have on vulnerable children locally, and across the state.

Angela Gross said in the span of just over a month, CASA programs have been hit by two large federal funding losses. Gross said first, the removal of $1.7 million in community project earmarks in March, and now the immediate termination of federal grant funding through the National CASA/GAL Association by the U.S. Department of Justice.

Gross said the loss of these funds jeopardizes the local organization’s ability to recruit, train, and support volunteers who serve as consistent, court-appointed advocates for children in foster care due to abuse and neglect.

CASA of Douglas County is one of 19 local programs in Oregon impacted by these cuts. The DOJ cuts to the national CASA impact CASA organizations and children across the entire country, according to Gross. Gross said, “We remain steadfast in our mission, but the reality is clear: fewer resources will make it more difficult to provide a dedicated advocate for children to have by their side during a critical time in their lives”.

Angela Gross will talk more about the situation CASA is facing on Inside Douglas County next Wednesday afternoon at 12:30 p.m. on News Radio 93-9 FM and 1240 KQEN

MAYOR’S PROCLAMATION CELEBRATING BIKE MONTH/BIKE FRIENDLY AWARD

KQEN News Radio

Roseburg Mayor Larry Rich has signed a proclamation celebrating National Bike Month and recognizing Roseburg’s honor as a Bike Friendly Community.

An Umpqua Velo Club release said every year, the League of American Bicyclists, the national organization advocating for a more bike friendly America for everyone, declares May as National Bike Month. During this celebration of bikes and the people who ride them, Roseburg and cities across the nation are called upon to get as many people riding as possible. The annual observance has been taking place for 69 years.

After an extensive application which required collaboration across city agencies and with local advocates and other partners, a report card is issued with feedback from the League’s reviewers. Roseburg has been honored as one of 91 communities nationwide to be designated as a Bicycle Friendly Community by the national organization.

The proclamation states that the bicycle is a viable and environmentally sound form of transportation, and an excellent form of recreation and notes that many Oregonians will experience the joys of bicycling during the month of May through a variety of special events.

The proclamation from Mayor Rich also noted that May 4th is National Ride a Bike Day, May 7th is Bike & Roll to School Day, May 12th-18th is Bike to Work Week, and May 16th is Bike to Work Day.
