OSP INVESTIGATION LEADS TO SEARCH WARRANT AT WEST COAST GAME PARK
KQEN News Radio

Thursday morning, the Oregon State Police, in coordination with local, state, and federal partners, served multiple search warrants at the West Coast Game Park Safari near Bandon.
An OSP release said the search warrants are the result of a lengthy criminal investigation into the facility’s operations. Investigators searched the game park for additional evidence related to the investigation, including animal care and welfare, permitting, licensing, and business practices.
OSP is working in conjunction with the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife, Oregon Humane Society, Oregon Department of Agriculture. Coos County Sheriff’s Office, Coos County District Attorney’s Office, Oregon Department of Justice and the IRS Criminal Investigation. Participating agencies provide regulatory oversight or bring specialized expertise in animal care to assist investigators with evaluating evidence gathered during the search of West Coast Game Park Safari.
The park is closed while police activity is present.
A follow-up news release is expected from OSP on Friday.
LESS THAN 9 PERCENT OF BALLOTS IN, 4 DAYS TO ELECTION DAY
KQEN News Radio

Less than 9 percent of ballots have come in, with only 4 days until Election Day in the 2025 Douglas County May Special Districts Election.
County Clerk Daniel Loomis said 8.65 percent, or 7,573 ballots have been received as of late Thursday afternoon. Loomis said that lags 5.04 percent behind the participation rate for the same point in the last special districts election in 2023.
Tuesday, May 20th at 8:00 p.m. is the Election deadline. Those who are taking their ballot to the post office this close to the deadline should ask staff to stamp their envelope with a hand-cancellation stamp. A ballot with a post mark after May 20th will not be counted.
Voters can use one of the 15 official ballot drop sites, until 8:00 p.m. Tuesday and be assured their ballot will be received and counted.

RPS BOARD VOTES NOT TO RENEW SPONSORSHIP OF PHOENIX SCHOOL
KQEN News Radio

On Wednesday, the Roseburg Public Schools Board of Directors voted to not renew its sponsorship of Phoenix Charter School, citing concerns over noncompliance with contractual obligations, and state and federal laws.
An RPS release said the unanimous decision follows the completion of the legally required charter renewal process under state law, which included a renewal hearing on April 9th. As part of the process, RPS secured a consultant from the Oregon School Boards Association to review the charter school’s academic, financial and organizational performance.
Superintendent Jared Cordon said following the review, OSBA Director of Board Development Kristen Miles recommended the board deny the school’s request to renew charter sponsorship. Cordon said in addition to legal compliance issues, the review found that the school has continually fallen far below standards in several academic areas, as well as attendance rates and graduation rates. That report can be viewed at: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1FwN6tzfUKSkp2fMITyaRzAi7syxEdFyZ/view
The release said RPS last renewed its charter agreement with Phoenix five years ago, with the current contract set to expire on June 30. Per the sponsorship agreement with Phoenix, school leaders have been providing updates to the Roseburg School Board three times per year to review progress with attendance, academic achievement, and students on track to graduate.
While the district sponsor’s Phoenix, charter schools in Oregon are considered independent, nonprofit organizations that have autonomy over their mission, strategic planning, budget, hiring, and the development and implementation of educational programs.
Cordon said as the charter school’s sponsor, RPS is responsible for ensuring compliance with all applicable laws, and that the school is financially viable, maintains successful academic programs and is responsibly managed.
The release said the school district and board of directors do not have jurisdiction over whether the school remains open, whether the school continues operations under sponsorship from another district, or whether the school continues to function as a private organization.

The Roseburg Receiver Updates
- We are now at 14,894 members!!! Thank you all so much for being here!
- The Roseburg Receiver Live YouTube stream will transition to a single, continuous livestream starting June 1st.
Currently, a new live feed is created every 12 hours, which can be confusing for viewers. Our goal is to provide one consistent link for uninterrupted access. Since radio transmissions are already archived separately, recording each YouTube segment is unnecessary and creates redundant files.
