RHS STUDENTS GRADUATING WITH INDUSTRY CERTIFICATIONS, TO JOIN WORKFORCE

KQEN News Radio

Last week, more than two dozen Roseburg High School students were recognized for completing the training and workforce required to earn professional certifications in healthcare and emergency services – credentials that will help launch their future careers.

A Roseburg School District release said through expanding career pathway programs through RHS and Umpqua Community College, students have completed the instructional components needed to pursue certification as Level 1 Certified Nursing Assistants, Phlebotomists, and Emergency Medical Technicians. Additionally, students in the RHS Fire Science program were recognized for completing coursework along the UCC associate of applied science degree pathway.

These dual credit programs allow students to earn college credit and industry credentials while still in high school, preparing them to enter the workforce or continue their education at UCC after graduation.

Program highlights include:

  • Certified Nursing Assistant – This program honored ten students who have completed their training.
  • Emergency Medical Technician- The EMT pathway celebrated five students who completed their coursework to prepare for their EMT certification exams.
  • Phlebotomy Certificate – This program recognized ten students for completing their training.
  • Fire Science Pathway – Five students were celebrated as the first participants, completing foundational coursework in fire safety and emergency response.

In addition, the Umpqua Health Alliance presented its first-ever UHA Healthcare Pathway Innovator Scholarship. This $2,000 scholarship was created to recognize students who have taken the lead in developing and expanding healthcare career pathways at Roseburg High School

The award was presented to Nilisha Patel, who reinstated the HOSA club at RHS and who was among eight students to apply. In a surprise announcement, the seven other applicants all received a $1,000 scholarship.

ROSEBURG LIBRARY WITH SUMMER READING PROGRAM

KQEN News Radio

Adults are invited to participate in the Roseburg Public Library’s Summer Reading Program for fun and prizes.

A city release said the program, which runs from Sunday, June 1st through Saturday, August 23rd, is made possible by the Friends of the Roseburg Public Library. A Roseburg Public Library card is not required to participate.

Based on the results of a survey from local readers, library staff again have a reading log with 30 prompts to guide participants. There are seven opportunities to read “a book of your choice” to provide readers some flexibility, and specific prompts include “a famous writer’s first book” and “a book that spans multiple decades”.

For each category completed, readers will be entered into a random prize drawing for a one-year membership to the YMCA of Douglas County.

Reading logs will be available at the library and on the library’s Summer Reading Program webpage at: www.roseburgpubliclibrary.org. Logs must be returned in person to the library or emailed to: library@roseburgor.gov by 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, August 23rd to be eligible for prizes.

For every five books completed on the reading log, patrons may choose a free book from the library’s giveaway cart, which is stocked with advanced reader copies of new, hot titles, and gently used donations.

For complete information, go to the Summer Reading Program webpage at: www.roseburgpubliclibrary.org

OREGON STATE PARKS DAY COMING ON JUNE 7TH

KQEN News Radio

Every year Oregon State Parks begins the busier season with a small thank you to its visitors – free camping and day-use parking on State Parks Day.

An Oregon Parks and Recreation Department release said State Parks Day has been a tradition since 1998 to thank Oregonians for their long-standing support of the state park system. It falls on the first Saturday of June, which is June 7th this year.

OPRD Director Lisa Sumption said, “We are honored to steward and share these places with Oregonians and all our visitors”. Sumption said, “We appreciate their commitment to preserving and maintaining Oregon’s special places. We would not have the park system that we have today without their support.”

OPRD will waive day-use parking at the 25 parks that charge them, and camping fees for all tent, RV, and horse campsites on June 7th. State Parks Day also includes many free events at many state parks.

The release said park staff have worked hard over the last few months getting parks ready for the busier season and State Parks Day. The list of projects includes everything from clearing storm damage, with as many as 180 downed trees near Nehalem, to moving mountains of muck and sand to re-open camp loops.

The Roseburg Receiver Updates

  • We are now at 14,916 members!!! Thank you all so much for being here!
  • The Roseburg Receiver Live YouTube stream will transition to a single, continuous livestream starting June 1st.
Currently, a new live feed is created every 12 hours, which can be confusing for viewers. Our goal is to provide one consistent link for uninterrupted access. Since radio transmissions are already archived separately, recording each YouTube segment is unnecessary and creates redundant files.
