KQEN News Radio

Roseburg had the hottest day of the year so far on Thursday.

Forecasters at the National Weather Service in Medford told News Radio 93-9 FM and 1240 KQEN that the mercury reached 86 degrees at the Roseburg Regional Airport. The previous warmest high temperature for 2025 was 84 degrees, set on April 14th.

Forecasters said Friday will have cloudy periods. A cold front will move in Friday night bringing showers that will linger through mid-morning on Saturday. The balance of the day is expected to be sunny. Low clouds are forecast for Saturday night into Sunday. Above normal temperatures are expected for next week with highs ranging between the low to mid 70s and the low to mid 80s.

KQEN News Radio

Roseburg saw below normal rainfall for the month of April but is still above the normal amount for the water year.

Forecasters at the National Weather Service said the Roseburg Regional Airport measured 0.76 inches of rain last month. The normal amount for April is 2.71 inches, meaning Roseburg was 1.95 inches below normal.

DOWDY INDICTED FOR FATAL CRASH WITH UCC BUS

KQEN News Radio

Wednesday morning in Coquille, four Coos County sheriff’s deputies wheeled Johnathan James Dowdy into a courtroom to face now-formal charges in the crash that claimed the lives of two members of the Umpqua Community College softball team and injured several others.

Dowdy, 32, of Coos Bay, was in a wheelchair as he heard the charges from Judge Matthew Muenchrath in Coos County Circuit Court.

Wednesday’s court appearance was initially scheduled to be a preliminary hearing but turned into an arraignment as a grand jury met Tuesday and returned a multi-count indictment, according to court records. The grand jury examined 11 witnesses including multiple police officers, at least one paramedic and a toxicologist from the Oregon State Police.

Dowdy’s indictment differs slightly from the crimes charged in his initial arrest by the Oregon State Police. In addition to two counts of first-degree manslaughter, he faces three counts of second-degree assault, eight counts of third-degree assault, nine counts of recklessly endangering another person. Additional charges include single counts of driving on a suspended license, driving while intoxicated and reckless driving.

The indictment accuses Dowdy of recklessly causing the death of two victims, under circumstances of extreme indifference to the value of human life. The counts of second-degree assault accuse him of causing serious physical injuries to three victims under those same circumstances.

Dowdy remains jailed on a bail of $2 million, and Muenchrath set his next hearing for May 21.

SENATORS MERKLEY, WYDEN RESPOND REGARDING RE-ELECTION PLANS

KQEN News Radio

With just over 100 days into the second term of President Donald Trump, Oregon’s Democratic U.S. Senators Jeff Merkley and Ron Wyden are responding to questions about each of their plans to run for re-election when their terms come up.

Maggie Sunstrum, spokesperson for the Merkley campaign told News Radio 93-9 FM and 1240 KQEN, “Jeff is 100% focused on defeating Trump’s agenda. Trump’s plan is simple: Families lose, Billionaires win. Jeff is fighting for a much better plan: Families thrive. And Billionaires pay their fair share of taxes”. Sunstrum said, “As usual, Jeff and Mary will make a formal campaign announcement regarding 2026 sometime this quarter”. Merkley was first elected to the U.S. Senate when he defeated Republican Senator Gordon Smith in 2008.

Wyden spokesperson Hank Stern told KQEN, “As Senator Wyden has said when asked, he fully intends to run for re-election in 2028”. Wyden joined the Senate after a special election where he defeated Oregon State Senate President Gordon Smith to fill the seat vacated by Republican Senator Bob Packwood in 1996.
