BALLOTS COMING IN FOR SPECIAL DISTRICTS ELECTION

KQEN News Radio

Ballots are beginning to come in for the Douglas County May Special Districts Election.

County Clerk Daniel Loomis said there are a number of things that voters should remember:

  • Ballots must be cast no later than 8:00 pm. on May 20th
  • Voters can use either the United States Postal Service or any official ballot drop site in Oregon to cast their ballot
  • Douglas County voters have eight drive-up locations to drop off their ballots
  • Before turning in a ballot, review and complete both sides of the ballot

Loomis said 0.14 percent, or 120 ballots have been received as of late Monday. That lags 0.28 percent behind the participation rate for the same point in the 2023 Douglas County May Special Districts Election.

The number of county voters has increased 1.24 percent or 1,096 voters since the previous special districts’ election 2 years ago.

ROSEBURG PARKING COMMITTEE TO BEGIN WORK

KQEN News Radio

The Roseburg City Council’s new Downtown Parking Committee will begin meeting soon to develop new recommendations to improve the parking program.

A city release said the committee’s 10-person membership took shape after the city solicited applications in April from people who live, work or own businesses downtown or in the Laurelwood neighborhood.

Starting at 5:30 p.m. this Thursday, the committee is expected to meet at the Public Safety Center four times every other Thursday to review existing parking operations, develop new recommendations and serve as community ambassadors for an updated parking management program for downtown and the Laurelwood neighborhood.

Community Development Director Stuart Cowie said, “I’m hoping that they provide City Council with recommendations about the parking program and how those adjustments will help to balance the Off-Street Parking Fund”.

Committee members include City Councilor Zack Weiss as chair, Cowie as staff liaison, and Umpqua Community College representative, and seven other people. Those seats were filled by a Laurelwood resident, and six others representing types of businesses in the downtown area.

The committee will consider different parking management strategies and the best way to balance the Off-Street Parking Fund, an enterprise intended to pay for off- and on-street parking enforcement as well as the maintenance and security of parking meters, parking lots and the downtown parking garage.

Meetings are open to the public. For more information, contact the Community Development Department at cdd@roseburgor.gov or call 492-6750.

FIR GROVE SPLASH PAD TO OPEN MAY 24TH

KQEN News Radio

Roseburg’s interactive spray park will soon open for the season.

A City of Roseburg release said the Fir Grove Park Splash Pad opens Memorial Day weekend, offering an oasis where families can escape the heat this summer.

Parks and Recreation staff will soon prepare for the facility’s opening on Saturday, May 24th. Parks crews will pressure-wash the splash pad deck, inspect the ultraviolet water treatment system that kills any algae or bacteria left over after filtration, clean and replace water-feature spray nozzles, and finally clean the system’s 4,000-gallon water tank and its valves.

The splash pad is a free seasonal offering open daily from Memorial Day Weekend through Labor Day. Hours of operation are from 10:00 a.m. to dusk. The splash pad is in Fir Grove Park, just off West Harvard Avenue behind the Umpqua Valley Arts Center.

Parks and Recreation Coordinator Tracy David said, “We’re always excited to open the Splash Pad each year”. David said, “We encourage families to take advantage of this popular park feature as a low-cost way to enjoy summer in our parks”.
