SUTHERLIN POLICE JAIL MAN FOR ALLEGED THURSDAY ASSAULT
KQEN News Radio

Sutherlin Police jailed a man Monday for an alleged recent assault.
An SPD report said on Thursday evening at 11:00 p.m. the manager at a motel in the 1300 block of West Central Avenue called 911 to report that two people had gotten into a fight. The victim reportedly sustained an injury to her back and had been strangled. The suspect, later identified as 45-year-old Damien Saltzman left the scene in a pickup and was last seen going south on Interstate 5. The victim was seen by medical personnel and was cleared.
An SPD officer later made contact with Saltzman to discuss the incident. He agreed to meet at the Sutherlin Police station on Friday. Saltzman was taken into custody on Monday and charged with 4th degree assault, a felony count of strangulation, and second-degree disorderly conduct. Bail was set at $10,000.
WATER RESCUE ON TAHKENITCH LAKE ON SATURDAY
KQEN News Radio

A Marine deputy with the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office assisted with a water rescue on Saturday.
A DCSO report released on Monday said shortly after 11:00 a.m. dispatch advised of a water rescue call on Tahkenitch Lake near the Tahkenitch campground and boat ramp. This is in the Oregon Dunes Recreation Area, north of Reedsport. Dispatchers said that three people were in a boat when it overturned, but only two were wearing life jackets.
The deputy arrived at 11:15 a.m. as two women, later determined to each be 22-years old and from Winston, had just made it to the shore. The deputy observed the male, later determined to be 39-years old, and also from Winston, floating in the water approximately 30 yards from the nearest dock. There were no other boats in the area to flag down. The deputy located a plastic pedal boat overturned on a nearby dock. Gardiner Fire Department crews assisted in overturning the boat and getting it into the water. The deputy paddled out towards the man and looped his safety rope across his arms and neck. He was towed back close to the dock where fire department staff was able to finish pulling him in.
All three people were cleared by medical crews. Boaters showing up at the ramp helped gather the floating debris and tow the boat that had overturned, back to shore.
UMPQUA VALLEY AUDUBON SOCIETY & LIBRARY TO HOST BIRD PRESENTATION
KQEN News Radio

Umpqua Valley Audubon Society and Roseburg Public Library will host a program titled, “Bird-Brained: Bird Intelligence and Behaviors” on Wednesday, December 10th at 6:00 p.m.
Ornithologist Dan Gleason will visit virtually on Zoom, and attendees are invited to participate in-person at the library on Northeast Diamond Lake Boulevard or on the library’s Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/roseburglibrary. A Facebook account is not required.
The release said some people use the term “bird-brained” to be an insult, but many species of birds are considered highly intelligent, and some, such as crows and ravens, maybe more intelligent than dogs.
The program will look at a variety of behaviors that demonstrate the intelligence of birds and consider the difference between intelligence and instinct.
Gleason taught on the faculty at the University of Oregon for more than 30 years and continued teaching Field Ornithology even after retiring. He is the author of two books about birds and his “Register Guard” column, “Backyard Habitats” ran monthly for more than 10 years in the mid-2000s.
Since 2013, Gleason and his wife, Barbara, have operated two Wild Birds Unlimited stores in Eugene.
The program is free and open to the public. For more information, contact Roseburg Library staff at 492-7050.

MERKLEY, WYDEN CALL FOR EMERGENCY FUNDING FOR WILDFIRE RECOVERY
KQEN News Radio

On Monday, Oregon’s U.S. Senators Jeff Merkley and Ron Wyden joined fellow western senators to urge Congress to pass additional funding to support wildfire recovery on public lands.
A joint release said in a letter to Senate Appropriation Committee Chair Susan Collins, and Vice Chair Patty Murray, the senators pressed for additional resources to help National Parks, National Forests and Bureau of Land Management lands recover from this year’s devastating wildfires. Since damage to federal lands is not covered by FEMA funding, federal land agencies are responsible for cleanup and restoration on their own.
The letter was led by U.S. Senators Ruben Gallego and Mark Kelly, both Democrats from Arizona. In addition to Merkley and Wyden it was signed by six other senators.
The Senators wrote, “We write to request that any emergency disaster appropriations bills drafted this year include funding for wildfire recovery on federal lands. Repairing wildfire damage to National Parks, National Forests, and Bureau of Land Management Lands is vital for the safety and economies of the entire country”. Their letter continues, “Just as our forests and parks require restoration, so too do the surrounding countries and communities that bear the economic and infrastructure impacts of their disasters, their recovery is inseparable from that of the federal lands themselves”.
Nearly one million acres of BLM land burned across the West in 2025 alone.
The release concluded, “In the past, Congress has appropriated the funds our public land agencies require for their critical response, remediation, and mitigation activities. Ensuring that federal lands are restored after wildfires is a responsibility to our shared, national heritage”.
Domino’s in Winston to Donate 50% of Sales to Winston-Dillard Food Bank on Dec. 1
The Roseburg Receiver

Domino’s in Winston will host a special community night on Sunday, Dec. 1, donating half of all sales from 5–8 p.m. to support the Winston-Dillard Food Bank. The event will also serve as a meet-the-owner night for franchise owner Angelique Martinez, who recently took ownership of the Winston location.
During the event, customers who bring canned food donations will receive $1 off any purchase. Guests can also participate in activities and giveaways, including an “Avoid the Noid Dough Toss” for chances to win gift cards, Domino’s merchandise, and even a chance at Free Pizza for a Year.
Martinez, who is available for interviews, began her career with Domino’s in 2016 as a single mother commuting to work by bicycle. Through several years of dedication and advancement within the company, she now celebrates ownership of her first franchise here in Winston.
“My team and I look forward to connecting with the community and raising funds for an amazing cause,” Martinez said. “I genuinely love this area and want people to know that we are here to support our community and serve delicious food made with love. Although we carry a corporate name, Winston Domino’s is a female-led, locally owned and operated business.”
Martinez says her goal is to help address food insecurity in the region.
“I want to make sure families have access to food and little bellies are fed,” she added.
The event will take place at Domino’s, located at 160 N.W. Main St., Winston, on Dec. 1 from 5–8 p.m. Domino’s will collect canned goods and donate a portion of sales directly to the Winston-Dillard Food Bank.
