Douglas County Morning News

WIND ADVISORY FOR MUCH OF REGION STARTS TUESDAY AFTERNOON

KQEN News Radio

A Wind Advisory remains in effect for much of the region from Tuesday afternoon at 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 a.m. Wednesday.

Forecasters at the National Weather Service in Medford said southeast winds of 25 to 35 miles per hour with gusts up to 50 miles per hour are expected.

The Advisory area includes all locations west of the Cascades in Douglas, Josephine and Jackson counties, especially all higher terrain and wind aligned valleys such as the Rogue Valley from Ashland to Medford. It also includes Roseburg, Sutherlin, Myrtle Creek, Elkton, Glendale and Grants Pass.

Forecasters said gusty winds will blow around all unsecured objects and a few power outages may result. Winds this strong can make driving difficult, especially for high profile vehicles. Motorists should use caution.

MERKLEY BLASTS SENATE REPUBLICANS FOR BLOCKING RESOLUTION

KQEN News Radio

Late Monday, Oregon’s U.S. Senator Jeff Merkley denounced Senate Republicans for blocking his resolution with Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer to force President Trump to immediately use all congressionally approved funding to keep families from going hungry.

Merkley said, “President Trump has a new MAHA strategy – the ‘Make America Hungry Agenda’ using food as a weapon to inflict harm to vulnerable kids, seniors, and families across America. It’s wrong on every level”. Merkley said, “Last month, the Trump administration indicated it had the authority to fund the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program during a government shutdown using an emergency fund appropriated by Congress. Rather than follow the law, Trump decided to use America’s most vulnerable families as political pawns and removed the policy from the Agriculture Department’s website. Children, seniors, and vulnerable families are not bargaining chips – they are Americans who rely on this critical program”.

Merkley continued, “Now the Trump Administration is claiming it will only fund half of SNAP benefits in November, and that funds wouldn’t be delivered – in its own words – ‘for a few weeks up to several months’. This is outrageous – the President needs to use both the full authority of the continency funds and the interchange authority to fully fund SNAP benefits for November, so families and kids don’t starve”

Merkley’s release said on Friday, October 31, two federal district courts ruled that President Trump was obligated to provide SNAP benefits via contingency funds, but earlier today, U.S. Department of Agriculture Deputy Under Secretary of Food and Nutrition and Consumer Services Patrick A. Penn said in a court filing that the agency would utilize its contingency funds but ‘USDA’s understanding is that the system changes States must implement to provide the reduced benefit amounts will take anywhere from a few weeks up to several months”. He also said that the contingency fund totals about $4.65 billion, which will only fund half of SNAP for November, and the Administration would not use interchange authority to spend Section 32 tariff revenue to fully fund SNAP.

Merkley claims that after nutrition assistance from SNAP for roughly 42 million Americans was stopped on November 1 due to the ongoing government shutdown, Senate Republicans blocked Merkley and Schumer’s resolution and failed to take further action to protect critical nutrition assistance for families nationwide.

SEARCH AND RESCUE LOCATES TWO MISSING MEN

KQEN News Radio

Douglas County Sheriff’s Office Search and Rescue has located two missing men in recent days.

A DCSO report said 61-year-old Darwin Trimnell of Myrtle Creek was reported missing after not returning to his hunting party on Thursday, October 30th around 9:00 p.m. A deputy initiated a SAR call out and responded to the area of Jackson Creek and South Umpqua Road in south county. Trimnell was entered as a missing person. SAR conducted a second search on Friday morning and located the man in good health.

Sunday evening at approximately 5:00 p.m. a towing company received third hand information about a man who had been stuck in the woods for four days and was needing a tow. They were given coordinates, name, vehicle type and directions. When the towing company couldn’t find 72-year-old Darrell Graham of Eugene, they called DCSO, requesting a welfare check. A deputy tried calling the original reporting party, but they didn’t answer. The deputy determined that the coordinates and directions were completely off but eventually found Graham in the China Saddle area of the Umpqua National Forest. The man was fine with waiting until Monday morning to get a tow.  The towing company was given the proper coordinates.

Information from DCSO was released on Monday afternoon.

DOUGLAS COUNTY PARTICIPATING IN OPERATION GREEN LIGHT

KQEN News Radio

The Douglas County Board of Commissioners have announced that the county will again participate in Operation Green Light.

During the month of November, as part of Veterans and Military Families Month, the front of the courthouse will be illuminated with green lights to show appreciation and support for veterans and their families. A county release said the commissioners encourage everyone to shine a light of hope and support for veterans by placing a green light on their porch or outside light fixture.

County government is joining with the National Association of Counties, the National Association of County Veterans Service Officers and other counties, parishes, and boroughs in the U.S. in supporting Operation Green Light to show support for veterans and let them know they are seen, appreciated and supported.

UCAN FOOD BANK PARTNERING WITH COLUMBIA BANK FOR FOOD DRIVE

KQEN News Radio

The United Community Action Network Food Bank is partnering with Columbia Bank for a month-long food drive.

It will take place throughout November at all Columbia Bank locations in Douglas County. Each branch will be collecting food donations on weekdays from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. All donations will go to community members with food insecurities.

Donations of non-perishable, nutritious foods are especially needed. That would include canned meat, peanut butter, cereal, canned vegetables, chili and hearty soups.

Columbia Bank is also the first organization to sponsor a UCAN Food Bank “Barrel of Hope”. Food Bank Director Val Gordon said the barrel is uniquely designed by a local artist and will be used in 2026. Gordon said UCAN believes that art has the power to create positive change and hopes to enrich the community through uplifting and visually stimulating food collections barrels located at organizations throughout the county.

The UCAN Food Bank supports 15 emergency pantries, 3 community kitchens and various supplemental agency partners. Currently, around 12,000 residents visit an emergency pantry in the county each month. 25 percent of those are children.
