SUNSHINE WITH NEAR NORMAL TEMPERATURES CONTINUE

The Umpqua Valley will continue to enjoy sunshine with near normal temperatures through Friday.

The forecast from the National Weather Service in Medford calls for afternoon highs ranging from the mid to upper 60s for the next few days. The seasonal normal high temperature for this week in October is 68 degrees. On Saturday, the high is expected to jump to the mid- 70s, but only for one day. Rain is forecast for Sunday, with a slight chance of rain on Monday.

Due to the federal government shutdown, the National Weather Service is not updating some online weather data such as high temperatures and precipitation amounts. Forecasters are not available to the public and calls to the NWS lead to recorded forecast information only.

ROSEBURG CITY COUNCIL MEETING HIGHLIGHTS

The Roseburg City Council met on Monday night.

A synopsis from staff said the highlights included:

  • Councilors approved an amendment to the Legion Field Operational and Management agreement authorizing the Douglas County Baseball Association to sell beer in paper cups, prohibiting the use of glass bottles and plastic cups, at Legion Field on a one-year trial basis.
  • Directed staff to prepare draft ordinance language that would amend Roseburg Municipal Code to establish an exclusive solid waste management license with Roseburg Disposal.
  • Directed staff to do nothing regarding to the council investigation discussion
  • Accepted Councilor Ellen Porter’s resignation as chair of the Public Work’s Commission

The next council meeting will be held on Monday, October 27th at 7:00 p.m.

LIBRARY WELCOMES DIABILITY RIGHTS SPEAKER ON THURSDAY

Roseburg Public Library will have a virtual presentation by disability rights activist Jennifer Keelan-Chaffins on Thursday night at 6:00 p.m.

A city release said attendees may participate in person at the library or on the library’s Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/roseburglibrary. A Facebook account is not required.

Keelan-Chaffins joined the disability rights movement at age 6. Two years later she participated in the famous “Capitol Crawl” protest to support the passage of the Americans with Disabilities Act. In 1990, she received the Americans with Disabilities Act Award from the Task Force on the Rights and Empowerment of Americans with Disabilities.

Today, Keelan-Chaffins is an educator, motivational speaker and owner of Keelan-Chaffins LLC. She teaches about the importance of ADA, the “Capitol Crawl” and the disability rights movement and its place in American history, with an emphasis on education, advocacy and empowerment.

The event is made possible by Libraries Transforming C9ommunities: Accessible Small and Rural Communities, a grant initiative by the American Library Association in collaboration with the Association for Rural and Small Libraries.

ROSEBURG VA HEALTH CARE SYSTEM WITH TAKE BACK EVENT OCTOBER 25TH

The Roseburg VA Health Care System will have a prescription drug take back event on Saturday, October 25th.

It will be held from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. under the Building 1 drive-up canopy on the Roseburg VA campus on Northwest Garden Valley Boulevard. In Lane County, the event will be held at the Eugene VA Health Care Center on Chad Drive, in the circular driveway.

The community is invited to turn in unneeded medication for safe disposal. The event is part of the Drug Enforcement Administration’s national take back day.

VOLUNTEERS SOUGHT FOR MAKE A DIFFERENCE DAY

Organizers of the fourth annual Make a Difference Day – Douglas County are seeking volunteers interested in working on community projects that have been identified for the October 25th day of service.

Make a Difference Day is a nationally recognized day of service that is held on the fourth Saturday of every October. The Make A Difference Day – Douglas County planning committee’s goal is to promote volunteerism throughout the county.

Volunteers are needed for over a dozen projects. The event’s primary sponsors include the United Community Action Network, Thrive Umpqua, Greater Douglas United Way, Roseburg Public Schools, Sunrise Enterprises, JustServe and The Salvation Army.

Make a Difference Day – Douglas County’s mission is to build support and opportunity for volunteers throughout the county, strengthening the community and making the area a healthier and safer place to live, work and play.

Planning committee member and founder of the event Tim Juett said, “The outpouring of support and volunteerism that results from this annual day of service is truly inspiring”. Juett said, “We encourage everyone to sign up for a project this year and experience the joy of service to others”.

Volunteers can choose a project to work on during a three-hour shift from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. on October 25th. Groups from businesses and service organizations are also encouraged to participate and can sign up as teams. EXTENSION SERVICE OFFERING WORKSHOP TO IMPROVE PLANT HEALTH

The Oregon State University Extension Service, in collaboration with the United States Department of Agriculture and Pacific University, is offering a specialized workshop on pathogen management for nurseries.

It is scheduled for October 24th from 9:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. The event will provide focused training on the detection and control of soilborne plant pathogens. Participants can expect to receive 6 core Continuing Education credits toward a pesticide license.

This workshop is for nursery professionals, growers, and land managers seeking to improve plant health and reduce the risk of pathogen spread.
