CLINT NEWELL NOMINATED FOR TIME DEALER OF THE YEAR

KQEN News Radio

Time Magazine has announced that local auto dealer Clint Newell has been nominated for the TIME Dealer of the Year award.

A TIME release said Newell is one of a select group of 47 dealer nominees from across the country who will be honored at the 109th annual National Automobile Dealers Association Show in Las Vegas, Nevada on February 5th, 2026.

The TEAM Dealer of the Year award is said to be one of the automobile industry’s most prestigious and highly coveted honors. It recognizes the nation’s most successful dealers who also demonstrate a long-standing commitment to community service. Newell was chosen to represent the Oregon Auto Dealers Association in the national competition for the 57th annual award from more than 20,000 nationwide.

After earning a business degree from Oregon State University in 1983, Newell partnered with his father and a colleague to acquire a new car store. Over time he became the 100 percent owner of what is now Clint Newell Toyota. The company employs 80 team members in Roseburg.

In 1994, Newell purchased a vacant former Montgomery Ward building and converted it into a modern dealership. In 2018, Newell invested $1.8 million to remodel the facility to current industry standards, focusing on customer-facing areas. Newell said, “Customers notice when you invest in them. We hear it every day”. Newell also launched a longstanding technician education/apprenticeship program. Newell said, “We build our own technicians – paying for school, training, and tool allowances. It’s one of the vest investments we make in people”.

The release said service to community is central to Newell’s life and business. In 1992 he was one of the founders of the free summer concert series, Music on the Half Shell. In 2014, Newell was given the male First Citizen award by the Roseburg Area Chamber of Commerce. He has been a member of the Umpqua Community College Advisory Committee since 2015. Since 2024, he has been a director of the Douglas County Baseball Association.

Dealers are nominated by the executives of state and metro dealer associations around the country. A panel of faculty members from the Tauber Institute for Global Operations at the University of Michigan will select one finalist from each of four NADA regions and one national Dealer of the Year. Three finalists will win $5,000 for their favorite charities and the winner will receive $10,000 to give to a charity, donated by ALLY Financial.

UMPQUA PUBLIC TRANSIT BOARD TO DISCUSS POSTING FOR CEO POSITION

KQEN News Radio

The Umpqua Public Transit District board of directors will discuss posting the position of chief executive officer, during their meeting on Monday night.

That position has been vacant since Ben Edtl resigned in August. Chief Operating Officer George Carrillo continues in his role.

Administrative Assistant Amira Kamel told News Radio 93-9 FM and 1240 KQEN that if eventually approved the posting would just be done internally, meaning only for existing employees to see, with no outside recruitment taking place. The matter will be talked about in an Executive Session, not open to the public.

The meeting will include an update regarding the Oregon Department of Transportation, a financial report, project updates and more.

It will be held at 6:00 p.m. at the UPTD offices at 516 Southeast Jackson Street in downtown Roseburg.

SAFE HAVEN MATERNITY HOME CELEBRATES SUPPORT FROM UMPQUA DAIRY

KQEN News Radio

Safe Haven Maternity Home is celebrating continued support from Umpqua Dairy.

A Safe Haven release said Umpqua Dairy has donated $20,000 to the non-profit organization.

Executive Director Evie Kumar said this deepens the company’s commitment to supporting vulnerable mothers and children in the community. Kumar said this year’s contribution includes $15,000 directed toward general program costs that sustain daily operations and comprehensive services that support the physical, emotional and practical needs of Safe Haven residents. With the remaining $5,000, Umpqua Dairy became the first corporate sponsor on the Diamond Level for Safe Haven’s 2026 Taste of Italy event.

Kumar said, “This continued generosity from Umpqua Dairy is both humbling and inspiring”. Kumar said, “Their investment in our mission allows us to provide safe housing, 24/7 staff support, nutritious meals, transportation, in-home classes, and aftercare services that empower our residents long after they leave”.

The Roseburg Receiver Helps Bring New GMRS Repeater and Regional Safety Upgrades to Douglas County

The Roseburg Receiver

When wildfires, storms, or earthquakes knock out power and cell towers, the most vital lifeline, communication, is often the first thing to disappear. A new project underway in Douglas County aims to change that, with local radio operators and The Roseburg Receiver partnering to expand a resilient radio network that can keep people connected even when phones and the internet go dark.

A new GMRS (General Mobile Radio Service) repeater is being installed near the summit of Mount Nebo, at about 1,450 feet elevation. The project is led by local radio enthusiast Dale Beaty (call sign WRTX950), who has spent years building and maintaining community radio infrastructure across southern Oregon and northern California. From its elevated location, the new repeater's signal will extend far beyond Roseburg, reaching Winston, Sutherlin, Green, and long stretches of the I-5 corridor. It will also have a battery backup to ensure continued operation during power outages.

Unlike basic walkie-talkies that only work over short distances, GMRS repeaters act as relay stations, receiving a radio signal and re-transmitting it over much larger areas. That means even small handheld radios can communicate over dozens of miles without relying on commercial networks. With repeaters covering multiple counties, conversations can travel across the region even if phones and internet service are down.

The Mount Nebo site is part of a broader effort to expand GMRS coverage throughout southern Oregon and northern California. Repeaters already serve Douglas, Klamath, Lake, and Siskiyou counties, and more sites are planned. The system is also tied into the Skywarn emergency information network, which automatically broadcasts weather alerts, fire warnings, tsunami advisories, and other critical messages every hour, or every 15 minutes during active emergencies. Operators can even trigger the system to read full NOAA alerts aloud over the air.

Local involvement is central to the project. One of those lending support is Joseph Ziegler, founder of The Roseburg Receiver. Ziegler, who has lived in Douglas County his entire life, has been a licensed amateur radio operator for more than a decade and has made radio contacts in 22 countries. He also holds a GMRS license (WSHD308) and says the effort is about "building tools that keep people informed and connected when traditional communication systems fail."

The new repeater will share its location with Project Skywatch, another Roseburg Receiver initiative that will place a high-definition, remotely controlled camera on Mount Nebo to monitor for wildfire smoke, severe weather, and other emergency conditions. Together, the camera and the repeater will provide real-time eyes and ears for the community when every second counts.

Two repeaters are currently active in Douglas County. The Roseburg repeater operates on 462.575 MHz with a DCS tone of 606N, while the Sutherlin repeater runs on 462.550 MHz with a 127.3 Hz tone. Both have a 5 MHz offset.

"This is about more than just radios," Ziegler said. "It is about creating a safety net that does not depend on commercial infrastructure and building resilience before the next emergency happens."
