GOVERNOR CONDEMNS NATIONAL GUARD COMING TO OREGON

KQEN News Radio

On Monday, Oregon Governor Tina Kotek issued a response to the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals ruling that the Trump Administration can deploy National Guard troops to Oregon in a 2 to 1 decision.

Governor Kotek said, “Oregon remains united in the fight against this unwanted, unneeded military intervention in Oregon. We will continue to show up for our neighbors, make our voices heard, and use our collective power to protect communities and our democracy”.

Governor Kotek said, “I have repeatedly called on the Trump Administration to tell the public exactly what mission he expects national guard members to do. These citizen soldiers have been pulled away from their families and jobs for weeks to carry some kind of mission in Oregon. They have been silent.”

The Governor concluded, “Right now, until the district court acts on the second TRO, national guard members from Oregon, or any other state cannot deploy. I support Attorney General Dan Rayfield’s efforts to continue fighting this in court and will continue to do everything in my power to defend the health, safety, and prosperity of every Oregonian. The fight is not over”.

Monday’s decision was also met with criticism from Attorney General Dan Rayfield and Portland Mayor Keith Wilson.

A contractor for the Oregon Department of Transportation is continuing a culvert and slide repair project on a one-mile stretch of Highway138W about seven miles west of Sutherlin.

Dan Latham of ODOT said repairs are being made on culverts that cross the highway and on a landslide near Marvin Hill. Latham said the project is scheduled for completion by the end of the month.

Work will require intermittent lane and shoulder closures. Flaggers will provide traffic control. Drivers should watch for construction vehicles entering and exiting the work zone. Brief delays should be expected.

SMART READING STILL LOOKING FOR COMMUNITY VOLUNTEERS

KQEN News Radio

With the school year again underway, SMART Reading is still seeking volunteers to help kids thrive through reading.

A SMART release said residents are needed to read weekly with local students.

Since 1992, SMART Reading has helped more than 334,000 Oregon children build reading skills and a lifelong love of books. This year, SMART hopes to serve over 1,300 students and give away more than 18,000 blooks in Coos, Curry and Douglas counties, ensuring kids have the tools they need to succeed in school and beyond.

Local SMART Reading Area Director Della Harp said, “Reading with a child for just one hour a week can ignite confidence, curiosity and a lifelong love of learning”. Harp said, “Volunteers often tell us it’s the best hour of their week – and the impact lasts a lifetime”.

ADMINISTRATION NOTIFIES STATES THAT SNAP BENEFITS NOT COMING FOR NOVEMBER

KQEN News Radio

On Monday, the Oregon Department of Human Services notified approximately 757,000 Oregonians who receive food assistance through the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program that they will not receive new benefits after October 31st because of the federal government shutdown.

Governor Tina Kotek said, “This is a cruel and unacceptable situation. President Trump should focus on feeding families by negotiating a deal with Congress, not doing other things like deploying troops in American cities on taxpayers’ dime”.

A release from Governor Kotek’s Office said that SNAP is fully funded by the U.S. Department of Agriculture which is at a standstill as a result of the shutdown.

On October 10th, the Trump Administration notified states that due to the shutdown, it was directing them to not begin the process of distributing November SNAP benefits until further notice. Approximately one in six residents in Oregon receive SNAP benefits.

The Oregon Department of Human Services encourages recipients to sign up for a ONE Online account or download the Oregon ONE Mobile app as the fastest ways to get notifications about SNAP benefits: https://one.oregon.gov/UserRegistration/LoginCA
