DATA ON FEDERAL GOVERNMENT JOBS IN DOUGLAS COUNTY

KQEN News Radio

Since the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics has suspended all monthly employment and unemployment reports due to the federal government shutdown, the Oregon Employment Department is highlighting data they continue to produce and share.

One such topic is an analysis of federal government jobs.

Regional Economist Brian Rooney said Douglas County had an average of 1,478 federal jobs covered by unemployment benefits during the fourth quarter of 2024. Rooney said that accounted for 3.8 percent of all jobs in the county. The top federal agencies in the county include the Department of Veteran Affairs with 889 positions, the Department of Agriculture with 298 jobs, the U.S. Postal Service with 155 positions and the Department of the Interior with 126 jobs.

OED said Oregon had an average of 29,000 federal government jobs covered by unemployment benefits during the first half of 2025. That accounted for about 1.5 percent of all jobs in the state. The federal government share of all jobs was much higher in some rural counties. The top 10 counties by the share of all jobs in the federal government were rural areas. More than 15 percent of all jobs in Sherman County were in the federal government. The next-largest shares were 9 percent in Grant County and 8 percent in Harney and Lake counties.

Rooney said federal government jobs tend to pay relatively high wages. Looking at annual average wages, jobs on federal government payrolls in Douglas County paid roughly $89,550 in 2024. That was about 66 percent higher than the annual wage for all jobs in Douglas County.

FALL TOURISM GRANT CYCLE TO OPEN IN ROSEBURG

KQEN News Radio

Local businesses and nonprofits planning events to attract visitors can apply for fall tourism grants after the Roseburg Community Development opens the application cycle on Monday, November 3rd.

A city release said successful applicants may win grants of up to $7,500 or even more to help draw visitors to Roseburg and the surrounding areas. The Community Development Department and the Roseburg Economic Development Commission will take applications for tourism grants until 5:00 p.m. on December 31st.

Applicants must submit well-researched, well-supported applications that identify exactly how they would use the funding. The city council can award grants larger than $7,500.

Community Development Director Stuart Cowie said, “We welcome new ideas for marketing and promoting local tourism events”. Cowie said, “We are excited to review applications”.

The city’s Tourism Grant Program is funded through the Roseburg hotel/motel lodging tax collected within the city limits.

Applications will be accepted from registered businesses, registered 501c3 non-profit organizations and other 501c tax-exempt organizations, and governmental entities.

Applications must be submitted by email, mail or in person to the Community Development Department at city hall located at 900 Southeast Douglas Avenue.

Grants are awarded for such things as advertising, publicizing, or distributing information to market special events and festivals designed to attract tourists, or to attract and welcome tourists at tourism-related facilities, or capital improvement projects that have a substantial purpose of supporting tourism or accommodating tourism activities.

The commission is especially interested in events that entice people to visit from Labor Day through Memorial Day, but all applications are strongly encouraged. The Economic Development Commission will review and consider all applications and vote on submissions at its next meeting on Thursday, January 22nd.

For more information, contact the Community Development Department at: cdd@roseburgor.gov or call 492-6750.
