HEAVY RAIN AND WINDY CONDITIONS FOR INLAND SOUTHERN OREGON

KQEN News Radio

Heavy rain and some windy conditions are expected for inland areas in southern Oregon through Sunday night.

Forecasters at the National Weather Service in Medford said the Umpqua Valley should see over 1.5 inches of rain in the three-day period. Wind gusts of up to 25 miles per hour are forecast for Saturday with wind gusts dropping to 20 miles per hour by Saturday night.

Rain remains in the Umpqua Valley forecast going into next week, but amounts are expected to dimmish.

WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY FOR SATURDAY AND SUNDAY

KQEN News Radio

A Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect from 11:00 a.m. Saturday to 5:00 p.m. Sunday for mountain areas in parts of southern Oregon.

Forecasters at the National Weather Service in Medford said snow is expected with accumulations of 6 to 10 inches, and up to 16 inches above 6,000 feet. Winds will gust as high as 60 miles per hour over high and exposed areas.

The Advisory area includes the south central and southern Oregon Cascades and Siskiyou Mountains. It applies to Crater Lake, Diamond Lake, and Crescent Lake as well as portions of highways 138, 62, 230, 238, and 58.

Forecasters said travel may be difficult with delays possible. Strong winds could cause tree damage. The heaviest snow is expected Saturday afternoon where there is a 70 percent chance of 1 inch of snow per hour.

CHRISTINE DRAZAN APPOINTED TO THE OREGON STATE SENATE

KQEN News Radio

Former Oregon House Republican Leader Christian Drazan has been appointed to the Oregon State Senate.

On Thursday, Senate Republican Leader Bruce Starr congratulated Drazan, as she takes the seat vacated by the resignation of former Senator Daniel Boham of The Dalles.

Starr said, “Christine Drazan is a proven leader with a deep understanding of the challenges facing Oregon families”. Starr said, “She has shown time and again that she’s willing to stand up for her community and fight for a better path forward for our state. Our caucus is thrilled to welcome her to the Senate, and we’re confident she’ll serve her constituents with the same integrity, energy, and commitment that have defined her public service”.

Drazan, who represented District 51 in the Oregon House of Representatives, was appointed by the boards of commissioners from Clackamas, Multnomah, Hood River, and Wasco counties to serve the remainder of Boham’s term, which runs through January 2027.

U.S. BANK BRANCH IN DRAIN TO CLOSE IN JANUARY

KQEN News Radio

U.S. Bank has announced that its north county branch in Drain will close on January 15th.

Company spokesperson Jake Holtrop told News Radio 93-9 FM and 1240 KQEN that clients received notification of the move earlier this month. Holtrop said the company understands that the closure of any branch is a disruption for its clients and employees and it is working to make the transition as smooth as possible for all involved. Holtrop said U.S. Bank is proud to have served its clients in Drain and hope they can continue to serve the community at its other locations in Cottage Grove and Roseburg. The Cottage Grove branch is a 17-mile drive from Drain. U.S. Bank has been the only bank serving the city of nearly 1,200 people.

Holtrop said the closure of the branch will not affect client accounts and there will be no interruption of service. Clients can also access their accounts on the U.S. Bank Mobile App or at www.usbank.com, as well as on the 24-hour banking number at 800-USBANKS.

Holtrop said that its client’s banking preferences and behaviors are changing, including a rapid migration toward digital and mobile banking platforms. Holtrop said, “As we evolve along with our clients, we are reevaluating our physical footprint, and in some instances, consolidating branch locations in select markets. Although we are closing some branches, we continue to open and enhance others, as well as rapidly enhancing our digital capacities”.

The company said the employees who wish to stay with the bank are encouraged to pursue other opportunities that may be available. This could include roles in other locations, as well as remote positions.

The downtown Roseburg branch of U.S. Bank closed at the end of April in 2024. That specific location had been open since the 1960s, though there had been a downtown office for 124 years.

U.S. Bank has 110 locations across Oregon.

HIV ALLIANCE RECEIVES GRANT FROM COW CREEK UMPQUA INDIAN FOUNDATION

KQEN News Radio

This year the HIV Alliance was awarded a $12,000 grant from the Cow Creek Umpqua Indian Foundation.

A release from the nonprofit said the grant supports basic needs assistance for individuals experiencing homelessness and people living on low incomes across several Oregon counties, with the goal of improving access to HIV care and prevention services.

As winter approaches, HIV Alliance is now utilizing the Cow Creek grant to purchase critical cold weather survival items, such as emergency shelter supplies, clothing, hygiene products, first aid and wound care kits, hand warmers and more. These items will be offered to at-risk unhoused community members in Coos, Douglas, Jackson, Josephine and Lane counties.

The release said houselessness and basic needs insecurity are among the strongest social determinants of health, directly affecting health outcomes while creating significant barriers to vital programs. Unhoused individuals in Oregon are disproportionately impacted by HIV, hepatitis C, substance use, drug overdose, and other potentially life-threatening conditions. The organization said providing survival supplies, especially during winter months, is a highly effective strategy to address urgent needs while improving engagement with healthcare and social services, which may lead to longer-term improvements.

HIV Alliance Executive Director Renee Yandelll said, “The Cow Creek Umpqua Indian Foundation continues to be a valued partner for our agency”. Yandell said, “We want to express our gratitude for their many years of support towards our work as well as the work of so many important nonprofit organizations in Oregon. Their support is highly impactful for achieving our shared missions to improve the health of our local communities.”

KQEN News Radio
