GOVERNOR KOTEK DEMANDS USDA ACTION TO PROTECT FOOD ASSISTANCE
KQEN News Radio

On Monday, Governor Tina Kotek and Oregon elected officials sent a letter to U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Brooke Robbins urging that the USDA take immediate action to ensure that Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program benefits continue without interruption as the federal government shutdown continues.
The letter said, ‘The ongoing federal shutdown has created unacceptable uncertainty for families, children, older adults, and communities across Oregon.” The letter continued, “Hunger should never be a consequence of a political stalemate. USDA must act swiftly to ensure that families have access to food and that benefits are delivered without delay”.
A release from the Governor’s Office said more than 757,000 Oregonians – including 210,000 children and 130,000 older adults rely on SNAP to meet their basic nutritional needs. It also noted potential economic ripple effects it said could result if SNAP benefits are disrupted, particularly in rural communities where SNAP dollars sustain grocery stores, small businesses and agricultural producers.
The letter was also signed by Secretary of State Tobias Read, Attorney General Dan Rayfield, State Treasurer Elizabeth Steiner, Labor Commissioner Christina Stephenson, and a number of Democratic legislative leaders.
DRAZAN ANNOUNCES HER SECOND RUN FOR GOVERNOR
KQEN News Radio

On Monday, State Senator Christine Drazan began her second run for Oregon Governor.
Drazan made the announcement of her candidacy to a crowd of workers from various industries at Gunderson Marine and Iron in downtown Portland. Drazan said, “The launch of a vessel and the launch of a movement share much in common. Both face uncertain seas. Both depend on the Oregon spirit of excellence, of faith and of hope”. Drazan said, “And it is with the same confidence in the boundless future of our state – the character of our people and our ability to build and achieve anything we set out to accomplish together – that I announce my candidacy for Governor of the Great State of Oregon”.
The Canby Republican, who moved to a vacant seat in the Oregon Senate last week, was the GOP nominee in 2022 and finished a close second in a three-way race that included winner Democrat Tina Kotek and Betsy Johnson, a former Democratic state senator who ran as an unaffiliated candidate.
Drazan worked on the staff as Oregon House Speaker Mark Simmons in the 1990s. She returned to the legislature after being elected the House District 39 seat in 2018. She became House Republican Leader in 2019, later stepping down from the legislature prior to her first run for Governor. Drazan was elected to the Oregon House a second time in 2024.
In her speech Monday, Drazan said, “Our future isn’t out there somewhere – it’s right here. This is our time to rise. This is our time to rebuild. This is out time to deliver. So, my fellow Oregonians – We don’t have a minute to spare. Let’s get to work”.

ROSEBURG’S NEEWOLLAH PARADE BACK ON FRIDAY NIGHT FOR HALLOWEEN
KQEN News Radio

Roseburg’s Neewollah Parade is back this Friday night for Halloween.
A city release said the event is believed to be the longest-running Neewollah Parade in the country. Roseburg began the tradition in 1933 when Neewollah – which is Halloween spelled backward – was a national phenomenon. The city has held it nearly every year since – aside from a few years during World War II and two years during the COVID-19 pandemic, when virtual parades and costume contests were held instead.
As kids are gathering candy from downtown businesses, a group of 8 to 10 Roseburg Area Dancing Witches will perform to a variety of songs including Michael Jackson’s “Thriller”.
Friday’s parade will begin near Roseburg City Hall on Southeast Douglas Avenue at 5:00 p.m. Costume tricksters can begin gathering at 4:30 p.m. on Southeast Jackson Street.
