WYDEN LEADS BIPARTISAN AMICUS BRIEF CHALLENGING PRESIDENT TRUMP’S TARIFFS

KQEN News Radio

This week Oregon Senator Ron Wyden said he is leading Senate and House colleagues in filing a bipartisan brief before the U.S. Supreme Court in the consolidated case challenging President Donald Trump’s use of the International Economic Powers Act to impose tariffs on imported goods.

A release said the tariffs imposed have raised average tariffs to their highest rate since the Great Depression and added more than $1,800 to costs for an average household. The brief argues that the Constitution grants Congress, not the president, the sole authority to impose tariffs and regulate commerce with foreign nations. The brief argues that the IEEPA, enacted in 1977, does not authorize tariffs. It urges the Supreme Court to reaffirm Congress’s authority over tariff policy and to strike down what it claims is President Trump’s misuse of IEEPA.

In addition to Merkley, and Oregon House members Suzanne Bonamici, Andrea Salinas and Maxine Dexter, the brief was signed by 33 Senators and 168 U.S. Representatives.

ROSEBURG CITY COUNCIL MEETING SYNOPSIS

KQEN News Radio

The Roseburg City Council met on Monday night and staff have provided a synopsis of the meeting.

Highlights include:

  • The council held a discussion about downtown and Laurelwood parking enforcement and directed staff to: Take out the old parking meters and update signage to reflect free timed parking, On-street parking permits, sold at $10 per month, will be brought back to the council for a vote in November. The News Review reports that these will be for seven specific downtown blocks identified by the Downtown Parking Committee. Adjustments to the cost of off-street parking lots – again by permits – will also go back to the council for a vote next month.
  • The council authorized a task order with Century West Engineering for the 2026 Pavement Management Program for an amount not to exceed $115,119.
  • Councilors approved an ordinance annexing just over 2 acres of property as 1058 Northwest Greenley Street. The parcel is adjacent to Northwest Troost Street in the Hucrest neighborhood.

Other items were approved as well. The next council meeting will be Monday, November 10th at 7:00 p.m.

THE FISH OF ROSEBURG WARNS OF A GROWING CRISIS AS MORE SEEK HELP

KQEN News Radio

The FISH of Roseburg is sounding the alarm about a rapidly intensifying hunger crisis, as more families in Douglas County are turning to emergency food support while the overall food supply continues to shrink.

FISH Executive Director Jenn Reida said, “Food should be a right, not a privilege”. Reida said, “Hunger isn’t someone else’s problem – it’s here in our neighborhoods, schools and workplaces. It’s affecting the people we know and care about.

A release from FISH said in the past week, the FISH of Roseburg served 823 families – the highest weekly total in its more than 50-year history. The pantry typically serves between 1,000 and 1,200 families in an entire month. 150 families were first time visitors. 123 families returned after months – some nearly a year – without needing assistance. Reida said, “These numbers tell us that people who believed they were financially stable are suddenly struggling again”.

At the same time, food banks in Oregon are receiving less food due to reductions in federal USDA commodity programs – and partners like The FISH are directly impacted.

Across the state, many food pantries are struggling to keep up, placing additional strain on those that continue to operate at full capacity. Redia said more than one in six Oregonians depends on Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Benefits – that is more than 750,000 residents.

The FISH Board President Nis Jessen said, “Our mission doesn’t stop when the situation gets tough – that’s when it matters most”. Jessen said, “We are committed to showing up for this community, finding creative solutions, and ensuring our neighbors have access to food. Hunger will not have the last word in Douglas County”.

For those who are needing food, current pantry hours are Mondays and Wednesday from 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m., Thursdays and Fridays from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., and on the fourth Saturday of the month from 10:00 am. to 1:00 p.m.
