GOVERNOR DECLARES FOOD EMERGENCY, DIRECTS $5 MILLION TO FOOD BANKS

KQEN News Radio

With thousands of Oregonians facing hunger due to the federal government shutdown and the upcoming loss of the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, on Wednesday Governor Tina Kotek announced a coordinated state response that includes three actions.

A release from the Governor’s office said that includes declaring a 60-day food security emergency, directing $5 million to the state’s food bank network and calling on all Oregonians to support their neighbors in need.

The declaration activates state agencies and resources to ensure that emergency food can reach vulnerable families while the federal government fails to release taxpayer dollars dedicated for food assistance during the shutdown. The Governor renewed her call for the U.S. Department of Agriculture to release emergency contingency funds already authorized under federal law to sustain SNAP benefits nationwide.

Governor Kotek said, “It’s unacceptable that families are being used as leverage in a political standoff in Washington D.C.” Governor Kotek said, “While the Republican-controlled Congress fails to do its job, Oregon will do ours. We stand up for each other, whether it’s fires, floods or any other crisis. I call on all Oregonians to do what they can to help their neighbors.”

The release said the 60-day emergency declaration establishes a statewide incident command organized by the Oregon Department of Emergency Management. Keeping the declaration active through the months of November and December means Oregonians will have greater access to emergency food during the holiday season.

The declaration will also ensure that when the shutdown ends, Oregon will be best positioned to turn SNAP benefits back on as swiftly as possible.

The Governor directed the Oregon Department of Human Services to deploy $5 million from the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families carryover funds to Oregon’s network of food banks. TANF carryover is unspent federal funding from prior years that remains available until used.

Governor Kotek is asking Oregonians to donate to the Oregon Food Bank or to support a regional food bank in their area by making a donation of food or volunteering their time to help.

The release said the ODHS will continue to provide updates on the SNAP situation to the public through its website, social medial channels, partner organizations and through additional media alerts.

DESPAIN CALLS OUT HOYLE FOR VOTING TO SHUT DOWN THE GOVERNMENT

KQEN News Radio

On Wednesday, Oregon 4th Congressional District candidate, retired Air Force Colonel Monique DeSpain, called on incumbent Congresswoman Val Hoyle to take responsibility for her H.R. 5371 vote to shut down the federal government.

DeSpain claims the decision is putting countless Americans out of work and jeopardizing vital public services and assistance programs need in the 4th district.

DeSpain said, “Val Hoyle voted against keeping the government open instead of extending the Biden budget funding levels, but like the career politician she is, Val’s pointing the finger at everyone else”. DeSpain said, “She has put American’s jobs, paychecks, and vital services at risk just to score political points – all while cashing her taxpayer funded salary and watching her hidden stock portfolio soar 400 percent in the last 3 years”.

DeSpain said as an outsider to this system, she offers the people of the 4th district the opportunity to be represented by a servant leader focused on delivering commonsense solutions to Oregonians. DeSpain said, “Oregon’s Comeback is just around the corner”.

UCAN MAKES URGENT CALL TO SUPPORT LOCAL EMERGENCY FOOD NETWORK

KQEN News Radio

The head of the United Community Action Network has issued a call for residents to support Douglas County’s emergency food network.

UCAN CEO Jordan Jungwirth said with food prices soaring recently, the organization has seen the demand for emergency meals doubling from recent years.

Jungwirth said earlier this year, the federal government reduced some of the food bank’s funding, decreasing the amount of food it can purchase. Now, with it likely that local residents will not receive Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program benefits in November, Jungwirth said many local children, seniors and people with disabilities will be left without adequate food to meet their needs.

A UCAN release said the suspension of the food stamp benefit is going to put enormous pressure on its network to meet local needs. Jungwirth said, “Hunger isn’t going to wait for a policy decision to be made. In Douglas County, one in five children are living in poverty and far two many families are already doing everything right, but still struggling to get by”. Jungwirth said, “Having access to emergency food means people won’t have to choose between buying groceries, paying rent, or keeping the lights on. This is a call to action for us all”.

Jungwirth said with about 18 percent of local households about to lose food stamps, there are a number of actions local residents can take to stop hunger locally:

  • Donate to UCAN financially by going to www.ucancap.org
  • Support local food drives or
  • Host a food drive or fund drive
