.DISCUSSION...Cool weather will continue today along with some showers and thunderstorms. Lightning risk is highest in NorCal and also from the Cascades eastward, especially this afternoon and evening. Due to high moisture content, thunderstorms in those areas will have the potential to produce brief, heavy rainfall. Activity should wane this evening, but may linger overnight east of the Cascades. Wrap around showers and thunderstorms are still possible Thursday afternoon and evening, again with greatest coverage near and east of the Cascades. Drier, warmer weather is expected Friday into Saturday before the next low brings another chance of showers Sunday.

A UNF update said in addition to twelve new fire starts between Saturday and Sunday, four new starts were found on Tuesday. Including the Sugar Loaf Fire, three fires remain active.
Firefighters are and will continue to be staged in strategic locations around the forest to be ready for any additional fire starts.

FIRE DANGER LEVEL DECREASES TO HIGH ON ODF PROTECTED LANDS
KQEN News Radio

Due to cooler temperatures and light rain, the fire danger on lands protected by the Oregon Department of Forestry Southwest Oregon District has decreased to “high”.
Public Information Officer Natalie Weber said this affects 1.8 million acres of state, private, county and Bureau of Land Management lands in Jackson and Josephine counties. Weber said the Industrial Fire Precaution Level will remain at Level 2.
The use of power-driven equipment, grinding, welding, cutting of metal and other spark-emitting equipment is now allowed until 10:00 a.m. and after 8:00 p.m. daily. Mowing of green lawns is allowed at any time.
A list of other fire prevention regulations which remain in effect are available at www.swofire.com
PINE STREET WATER MAIN REPLACEMENT PROJECT TO START
KQEN News Radio

A water main replacement project is expected to begin next week along Southeast Pine Street between Southeast Oak Avenue and Southeast Sykes Avenue in Roseburg.
A city release said starting next week, the project will replace about 2,600 linear feet of 6-inch-water main installed in the 1930s with new 8-inch-diameter water main. Work will also include mid-block water main replacements on Southeast Mosher Avenue and Southeast Cass Avenue between Pine Street and Southeast Stephens Street.
The Roseburg Public Works Department contracted with NorthCore USA of Albany to construct the project.
Work is scheduled to begin Wednesday night, September 17th and continue through Wednesday, September 24th, from 7:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. The contractor will begin daytime work on Monday, September 29th, from 6:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.
The release said the project may shut down temporarily over the winter, due to weather constraints, then resume in the spring.
Work will take place in the right-hand, south-bound lane of Southeast Pine Street between Oak and Sykes avenues. During working hours, one lane of Pine Street will be closed to traffic through the work zone.

MERKLEY, COLLEAGUES: ADMINISTRATION MUST DO MORE TO PROTECT WILDLAND FIREFIGHTERS
KQEN News Radio

On Tuesday, Oregon’s U.S. Senator Jeff Merkley led a group of colleagues including Senator Ron Wyden, in demanding that the Trump Administration ensure federal wildland firefighters are adequately protected from wildfire smoke as they risk their lives to protect the American people and our public lands.
In a letter to Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins, Interior Secretary Doug Burgum and Labor Secretary Lori-Chavez-DeRemer, the senators wrote, “Every day, wildland firefighters risk their lives to combat wildfire and keep us safe from longer and more extreme fire seasons. This often requires multiple days and weeks – and sometimes months – being exposed to the smoke and other products of combustion generated from these fires”. The senators said, “Experts have clearly stated that ‘there is no safe level of exposure to wildfire smoke. In fact, compared to regular air pollution, wildfire smoke is approximately 10 times as toxic, and breathing it in can cause a wide range of negative health outcomes” The letter said, “Keeping wildland firefighters safe from – not just wildfires – but also the effects of smoke exposure is vital to ensuring this workforce can continue to keep us safe”.
A release said the Senator’s letter follows a recent report from The New York Times that spotlighted how wildland firefighters are increasingly falling ill due to wildfire smoke exposure, facing increased rates of cardiovascular and lung issues, cancer and premature death.
The Senators directed the Trump Administration to respond to their letter by no later than September 30th.
