Roseburg Area Morning News

RECORD BREAKING HEAT EXPECTED FOR TUESDAY

KQEN News Radio

Tuesday could see a record breaking high for the date in Roseburg.

Forecasters at the National Weather Service in Medford told News Radio 93-9 FM and 1240 KQEN that a ridge of high pressure aloft is bringing a warm air mass into the region. Roseburg is expecting a high temperature in the mid 90’s. The record high for September 16th is 93 degrees, set in 2008.

The mercury reached 78 degrees on Monday at the Roseburg Regional Airport.

NORTH DOUGLAS COUNTY FIRE & EMS DEAL WITH STRUCTURE FIRE FRIDAY

KQEN News Radio

Crews with North Douglas County Fire & EMS dealt with a structure fire in the Yoncalla area late Friday afternoon.

Fire Chief Brian Burke said the fire was reported at approximately 4:20 p.m. with callers saying that flames were visible coming from a window and the front door. Burke said neighbors reported that a dog was inside and they had attempted to alert occupants by banging on the door. Just after 4:30 p.m. deputies from the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office and troopers from Oregon State Police arrived on scene. They entered the smoke-filled residence and successfully rescued the dog. No other occupants were inside.

Burke said firefighters got to the scene a minute later and quickly brought the fire under control. Firefighters searched for fire extensions and confirmed that the blaze was contained. The homeowner later arrived and was reunited with the dog, who received oxygen and medical attention from North Douglas County Fire & EMS personnel.

The fire is believed to have originated from a burner left on the stove. Damage was concentrated in the kitchen, with smoke damage extending throughout the residence. The homeowner declined assistance from the American Red Cross.

Burke said due to water restrictions in place within the City of Yoncalla, firefighters utilized water tenders to supply suppression efforts, successfully limiting the need to draw water from city hydrants. No hydrant water was used during the incident.

North Douglas County Fire & EMS was also assisted by rural fire districts from Elkton, Oakland and Fair Oaks.

ROSEBURG MAN ARRESTED FOR ILLEGAL DUMPING

KQEN News Radio

A Roseburg man was arrested for illegal dumping last week, following a brief investigation.

A Douglas County Sheriff’s Office report said a deputy funded by and assigned to the Douglas County Solid Waste Department located evidence of illegal dumping in the 2000 block of Roberts Mountain Road and launched an investigation. The evidence led to the identification of 80-year-old Kenneth Myers as the suspect. On Thursday, Myers was contacted at his residence, taken into custody, and transported to the Douglas County Jail, where he was booked and later released. Myers faces charges of offensive littering, a class C misdemeanor, and depositing trash within 100 feet of a waterway, a class B misdemeanor.

DCSO said this is not the first complaint about illegal dumping on Roberts Mountain Road or at other locations throughout the county. The deputy assigned to these cases actively monitors problem areas, investigates reports, and takes enforcement action against offenders.

Several years ago, the Douglas County Board of Commissioner funded a dedicated deputy assigned to the Solid Waste Department with the intent of using active enforcement as a strategy to prevent and deter illegal dumping throughout the county.

Anyone who has information about illegal dumping can call DCSO at 440-4471. Tips and reports can remain anonymous if desired.

REPRESENTATIVE OSBORNE SEEKS THIRD TERM IN HOUSE DISTRICT TWO

KQEN News Radio

State Representative Virgle Osborne has officially announced his campaign for re-election to serve Oregon House District 2, which includes most of Douglas County.

In a release, Osborne reaffirmed his commitment to the community and shared his motivation for seeking a third term. Osborne said, “I am proud to throw my hat in the ring once again to continue to represent the people of District 2. I have spent my time in the legislature fighting for our conservative values and delivering results for the people of our district.” Osborne said, “The supermajority in Salem wants higher taxes and more government regulation. They want to take away our constitutional freedoms, including our Second Amendment rights. I refuse to let that happen”.

Osborne said the district needs a representative who understands our way of life. One who will stand up to tax hikes, fight for jobs, defend our Second Amendment, and put rural Oregon first.

The release said during the last legislative session, Osborne worked to secure funding for rural communities in Douglas County. His efforts resulted in:

  • $35 million allocation for a new veteran’s home in Roseburg
  • $1.4 million dedicated to the Rock Creek Hatchery
  • $504,000 awarded to the Sutherlin Fire Department
  • 176,721 designated for the Roseburg Cancer Center

OREGON HIGHWAY 42 PAVING IS UNDERWAY IN THE GREEN DISTRICT

KQEN News Radio

Oregon Highway 42 drivers should watch for nighttime lane closures and congestion through the Green District as paving work is underway.

Oregon Department of Transportation Public Information Officer Dan Latham said most paving work will focus on the four-lane section of Oregon 42 between the South Umpqua River bridges and Carnes Road. Latham said that is between mileposts 74.5 and 75.7

Paving is scheduled nightly from 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 a.m. Sunday nights through Friday mornings. During this phase, at least one lane in each direction will remain open at all times. Latham said delays should be brief. Drivers are asked to slow down and watch for traffic control devices, construction workers and equipment.

This week, prime contractor Rocky Mountain Construction is paving areas along the shoulder where Oregon Highway 42 will be widened to accommodate new turn lanes and U-turn movements. Then paving work will shift to the highway travel lanes.

Latham said when this section of paving is finished, the contractor will install raised concrete barrier and traffic separators along the center median. These safety features will be in place before the new traffic signal at Rolling Hills Road can be installed.

The contractor will return next spring to pave other areas of Oregon Highway 42, from Lookingglass Creek to the Umpqua River Bridges and from Carnes Road to Interstate 5.

All work on the $11.97 million project is scheduled for completion in September 2026.
