Roseburg Area Morning News

ROSEBURG HAS NEW RECORD HIGH TEMPERATURE FOR THE DATE ON TUESDAY

KQEN News Radio

Roseburg saw a new record high temperature for the date on Tuesday.

Forecasters at the National Weather Service in Medford told News Radio 93-9 FM and 1240 KQEN that the mercury reached 96 degrees at the Roseburg Regional Airport. The previous record high temperature for the date was 93 degrees, set in 2008.

The Umpqua Valley is forecast to have slightly above normal temperatures through the weekend, except for Thursday when the high is expected to be near 80. Forecasters said the normal high temperature for this week in September is 80 degrees.

TRANSPORTATION SPECIAL SESSION TO RESUME DURING INTERIM LEGISLATIVE DAYS

KQEN News Radio

The Special Session of the Oregon State Legislature has been delayed again and is now scheduled to resume during interim legislative days, starting September 29th.

A release from Oregon Senate President Rob Wagner said the move was due to the medical condition of Senator Chris Gorsek of Gresham. Wagner said Gorsek’s medical team says it would be “medically unsafe and unwise for Sen. Gorsek to leave the hospital at this time”.

On Tuesday, President Wagner visited with Senator Gorsek to check on him and pass along the well wishes of his fellow senators. Senator Gorsek is recovering from scheduled back surgery which resulted in an unforeseeable complication.

The Special Session began earlier in the month with the House of Representatives passing two bills to provide additional funding for the Oregon Department of Transportation. Senator Gorsek’s vote is needed for Democrats to be able to pass the legislation in the Senate chamber.

Senate Republican Leader Bruce Starr of Dundee said the situation was avoidable. Senator Starr said, “…Governor Kotek could have worked with Republicans from the beginning to craft a transportation package with true bipartisan support – one that redirected existing funding to road maintenance and operations, protected ODOT jobs, and eliminated the costs to drivers that have made transportation more expensive under her leadership”.

Senator Wagner said, “The Senate will provide Sen. Gorsek with the time he needs to regain his health and be present for the vote on transportation policy he was instrumental in creating”.

DRAIN MAN JAILED ON KIDNAPPING CHARGES

KQEN News Radio

A Drain man was jailed on kidnapping charges on Monday.

A Douglas County Sheriff’s Office report said at 9:45 a.m. a deputy responded to a residence in the 700 block of Laurel Hill Drive in the Drain area. During an altercation a victim called 911 asking for law enforcement, claiming that 56-year-old Gordon Gave would not allow her to leave the property or hadn’t let her call police for help.

The report said during this time Gave allegedly damaged property that did not belong to him as well. Gave was charged with second-degree kidnapping, coercion, interfering with a police officer, second-degree criminal mischief, and menacing. Gave was transported to corrections and detained on $10,000 bail.

BUREAU OF LAND MANAGEMENT HAS NATIONAL PUBLIC LANDS DAY ON SATURDAY

KQEN News Radio

The Bureau of Land Management will have a volunteer family friendly day of trail maintenance work at the Susan Creek Falls Trail, as part of National Public Lands Day this Saturday.

A BLM release said the event will take place from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 pm.

Swiftwater Field Manager Mike Korn said, “We are excited to offer a National Public Lands Day event at our Susan Creek Falls Trail”.  Korn said, “This is a great opportunity for our local communities to assist in maintaining and restoring the trail, one of our most visited recreation sites”.

Volunteers interested in participating should arrive by 9:00 a.m. on Saturday. Volunteer opportunities will include continued work to repair recreation infrastructure affected by the 2020 Archie Creek Fire.

The release said the BLM will provide all tools and work gloves needed. Participants should wear sturdy shoes, sunscreen, a long-sleeved shirt and long pants and should bring water and a light snack.

To get to the initial meeting location, travel approximately 29 miles east of Roseburg on Highway 138E. The parking area is approximately a half mile past the Tioga Pedestrian Bridge. Parking will be available at the trail head and the Susan Creek Day use area.

Those who plan to participate should RSVP their attendance to Greg Deimel at: gdeimel@blm.gov.

This event is one of hundreds occurring across the nation in celebration of National Public Lands Day.
