Fire Weather Forecast for southern Oregon and northern California
National Weather Service Medford, OR
517 AM PDT Fri Sep 19 2025

DISCUSSION: A surge of sub-tropical moisture could bring isolated thunderstorms to NorCal, especially western Siskiyou County this afternoon and evening. The broad area of moisture could bring showers and isolated thunderstorms again in NorCal and also from the Cascades eastward Friday into Saturday. On Sunday, a cold front will move through with some light rain/drizzle along the coast/NW Douglas County, but it will likely be a dry frontal passage elsewhere. Gusty afternoon west winds are possible east of the Cascades. By Monday and Tuesday, an upper ridge returns with a warm-up, but with chilly mornings. Steep inversions with breezy east winds at the ridges could develop too.

FIRE CREWS DEAL WITH WILBUR ROAD FIRE

KQEN News Radio

Crews with the Douglas Forest Protective Association and Central Douglas Fire & Rescue responded to an estimated 0.25-acre grass fire at 3:00 p.m. on Thursday.

DFPA Public Information Officer Rachel Pope said the fire was located near the intersection of Wilbur Cemetery Road and Old Highway 99 North, in the Wilbur area.

Pope said upon arrival on the scene, crews found a moderately moving grass fire located between the creek and the road. Immediate action was taken, and the fire was quickly knocked down. The confirmed 2.2-acre fire was 90 percent mopped up, as of Thursday evening. The cause of the Wilbur Road Fire is under investigation.

Pope said even with cooler weather and shorter days, fire danger throughout the district is prevalent, as fire season continues. Get the latest updates at: www.dfpa.net.

MERKLEY LEADS CALL FOR U.S. RECOGNITION OF PALESTINIAN STATE

KQEN News Radio

On Thursday, Oregon’s U.S. Senator Jeff Merkley introduced a resolution calling on the President to recognize a Palestinian state.

A release said the resolution is the first of its kind in the United States Senate and calls for the U.S. to recognition of a demilitarized Palestinian state alongside a secure Israel, in accordance with international law and the principles of a two-state solution. Merkley said it underscores how urgent U.S. action would preserve the best chance for peace, helping give both Palestinians and Israelis a future grounded in freedom, security and prosperity.

Merkley said, “Recognition of a Palestinian state is not only a practical step the United States can take to help build a future where Palestinians and Israelis can live in freedom, dignity, and security, but it is the right thing to do. American has a responsibility to lead and the time to act is now”.

The resolution is co-sponsored by seven other Democratic Senators including Tim Kaine and Bernie Sanders.

The release said as a senior member of the Senator Foreign Relations Committee, Merkley has long advocated for a two-state solution for Israel and Palestine to support peace and stability across the Middle East.

‘SWIFT WATCH” EVENTS PLANNED FOR ROSEBURG

KQEN News Radio

Migrating Vaux’s Swifts are returning to Roseburg, just in time for a local group of bird lovers to set up “Swift Watch” events this Friday and next Friday evening.

A City of Roseburg release said about 1,000 of the birds began showing up earlier this week in Fir Grove Park, where they are roosting for the night in the chimney of the Clay Place studio, adjacent to the Umpqua Valley Arts Center, off West Harvard Avenue.

Umpqua Valley Audubon Society board member and past president Diana Wales said, “I am delighted, I am mystified by what’s going on”. Wales said, “I love nature. It is so unpredictable. No matter how much we think we know, we don’t know enough. There’s always something to learn”.

The local Audubon Society had given up hope of witnessing the spectacle of the birds’ seasonal migration this year and had earlier announced that “Swift Watch” would not be held in Roseburg this autumn. That was after no large flocks of swifts had been seen in Roseburg since UVAS members began watching at the start of August.

While there are several chimneys around town where 200 to 300 birds roosted in the past, the largest group would stop overnight at the Clay Place chimney in both the spring and the fall. In fact, they’ve roosted there during migrations each spring and fall for at least 50 to 60 years. Three years ago, the swifts abandoned that chimney.

Now that the birds are back, “Swift Watch” events have returned to the schedule. They are presented by the Umpqua Valley Audubon Society and Roseburg Parks and Recreation. They will take place on both Fridays at 6:30 p.m. Organizers encourage people to bring a folding chair, camp chair or blanket, or just watch from their cars.

Swifts usually enter the chimney at sunset, which will be at 7:15 p.m. this week and just after 7:00 p.m. next Friday. The birds could roost earlier or later, depending on the weather.

MASTER GARDNER ASSOCIATION LAUNCHES NEW SCHOLARSHIP FUND

KQEN News Radio

The Douglas County Master Gardener Association has announced the creation of a new scholarship fund through the Umpqua Community College Foundation.

A release said it is aimed at supporting local students pursuing studies in horticulture, agriculture, botany, environmental science, or related fields.

The initiative reflects DCMGA’s longstanding commitment to education, sustainable gardening practices, and community enrichment throughout Douglas County. The scholarship is designed to assist students who demonstrate academic potential, a passion for plant sciences, and a desire to make a positive impact in their communities through green industry careers.

DCMGA President Ann Severson said, “This scholarship fund is a natural extension of our mission to foster knowledge and stewardship of gardening and environmental practices”. Severson said, “By investing in the next generation of plant and environmental science professionals, we’re helping cultivate a healthier and more sustainable future – for Douglas County and beyond”.

To be eligible, the field of study must be related to horticulture, agriculture, botany, environmental sciences or a similar discipline.

Funds for the scholarship were raised through DCMGA’s fundraising efforts and donations from local supporters. The fund will be managed and distributed by the UCC Foundation, with the first DCMGA scholarships being awarded according to the foundation’s practices sometime in the future.
